japan has lost its mind,  does every game now need to be monster hunter?  I also find it funny that all of a sudden "Create your own hero" is a selling point
Posted by GilbertMordinAndSullivan

Oh, I'll probably buy this, play if for a while, and get sick of all those fucking random battles like I do with all the other Dragon Quest games.

Obviously not, but when you sit down and look at the fat stack of money Capcom makes with that franchise, its hard not to try to do something like that. And in Japan, it paid off; right behind Monster Hunter, DQ9 is the mobile game, if not video game period, of choice.

might be interesting or be garbage, you never really know when it comes to JRPGs

Posted by liako21

creating your own hero seem kinda neat

@f33r_mai_ch33tz: 4 million sold in Japan probably makes it VERY unlikely to be garbage.

Just like you never really know with any game? :p

The fact that this is Dragon Quest does give me higher expectations than I usually have for other games.  I just hope that playing single player is the main focus, because I don't really have anyone to try out the co-op with.

yes.

Wish I had the enthusiasm to play another dragon quest game just can't take anymore of that stale shit gameplay. It was fun in the late 80's and early 90's but a fucking torture to make it through when you play modern games all the time.

@Outrager:  I remember in the N64 days some horse racing simulation was their top selling game.

Spoilers: This game will probably sell a lot of copies in Japan.

Unless it already came out in Japan and already sold a lot copies, in which case, this is not much of a spoiler.

it depends on the ratio between actually playing a game and sitting there watching endless cut scenes where the characters all have diarrhea of the mouth.

Them's DQ7 numbers.

Some of the whippersnappers could do to be reminded that DQ1 was the first JRPG as we know them now. There weren't any before that... "before" that was Wizardry and Ultima (and Black Onyx). Nintendo Power had to train us about what the hell this game was, barely 20 years ago.
Spinoffs are one thing, but the Enix in Squeenix ain't gonna let the grandpappy of them all fail. DQ can sell a million by accident and the rest is cake.

Man, that Black Onyx page could use a Wiki Task...

So... Modern Warfare 2 must be like the best FPS ever!

The masses require an amount of bullshit and crappiness in their product/servie this is nothing more than another sign of that. Of that, and the lack of evovlution in japanese videogame development, whichever genre, they suck at every one.

I think i heard something about Persona like encounters
Posted by GilbertMordinAndSullivan
@Resident4t: Well, that's a step in the right direction, at least. Now, if the game could have combat and story as interesting as Persona...

DAMMIT, can I just play Persona 5 already?

Looks pretty good. I love the art style.

DQ games have never been very story heavy. DQ7 and 8 were closer to the JRPG standard, but still had nowhere near as much story as your average Final Fantasy game. Also: Silent protagonists instead of typical JRPG whiners.

Wish my DS wasn't broke.

Looking forward to this.

FUCK DRAGON QUEST!  >.>

4-player co-op RPG?! Aw, why does it have to be on DS...

Posted by Evansoft

Anybody else absolutely love dragon quest VIII?

Posted by beatlebrainiac

So, uhhh, what happened to the DQ6 DS remake? It's been over 18 months since DQ5 came out. I'm starting to grow impatient.

DQVIII on PS2 = Awesome. DQIX on DS = Massive Downgrade.

And you know this because...?

@Hailinel:  what i mean is i liked playing it on a console with lush toriyama environments and fantastic audio for a fantastic soundtrack. they could have at least put it on wii or something. what i've seen on it on ds I don't like. imagine if square decided suddenly they were gonna put final fantasy XV on ds or something. i don't think the fans would react well, considering it relies on graphics etc. dragon quest isn't that different really, besides its cartoon toriyama style.

Well, Dragon Quest X is a Wii title, so there you go.  I'm at least going to give DQIX a go before I pass judgment on it, though.  Even the DS remakes of IV and V were very good in their own right even though they're graphically not as advanced.

Totally going to buy this.

I was listening to Let's Groove Tonight in another tab while I watched this. Not bad, not bad at all.

Posted by LordelX

Already played through the Japanese version, it is quite a good game for a portable RPG. Highly recommended.
Posted by MysteriousBob

Oh look, its just like the other billion JRPGs that exist.

"Create your hero"?
Really? Thats all they've got to sell this game?

Posted by PenguinDust

I love hearing that music.  This is a buy for me.

According to the previews I've read, there are no random battles.  Enemies are on screen ala Chrono Trigger.

Actually it has been in out Japan for a few months now.
Still pending for a release date in the west, but can take well up to like 8 or 9 months as with the previous ones iirc.

@ mordecaix7

Well, they were visible in Chrono Trigger, but there were still a lot of unavoidable and sudden battles :P

Looks interesting, I've never played a dragon quest game, but I'll wait and see what happens

Posted by MeatSim

I saw blue slimes so this is definitely a Dragon Quest game.

Well, since this game is the best selling game in the series, it seems the fans really liked it. What's more, the critical reaction has been very good.

Believe it or not, people play games to play games, not look at things. Moving DQ9 from PS3 to DS might just be one of the best decisions they could have made.
Posted by mewarmo990

CO-OP DRAGON QUEST!?!?!? And no more random battles!

Looks like they're finally trying something new, which ironically goes against the whole point of the DQ franchise.

Looking forward to playing this.
