Shame they had to nickel and dime this game. Was ready to go buy it until I saw them charging for the content on top of the base line price.

@crusader8463: I thought you could technically earn everything in this game? You could buy it if you wanted, but you could also earn it all in game.

Content unlockable by playing and completely irrelevant to the actual gameplay. The only stuff you can't unlock through playing are completely pointless cards and avatars that follow you around.

If idiots buying clothes and vanity items means free gameplay updates, sign me up any day.

@Arker101: I think you can, but unlocking stuff kind of ruins the achievement of doing it when I know some rich guy can just buy the same thing I had to work towards.

@animathias: If they do a ton of free updates of the quality of this I could see myself giving into it and trying it eventually, but I just can't stand when games let people pay their way to the best stuff. Even if it is just vanity items. I feel like it cheapens the experience for me.

I am kind of holding off on this game until they fix that losing your characters stats bug. Any word if that has been corrected yet? I really want to play this game but don't want to be frustrated with it.

All of the content in this game can be unlocked using in game currency. No nickel and diming. Also, the game costs $15 not 60

Looks like they are adding some cool stuff.

It's too bad that people are giving it such a hard time because of them letting you pay for content even when they don't understand how the system they have works. Any items that have an effect on gameplay such as guns, mods, psych profiles, and fun facts CAN ONLY be unlocked through playing the game. You can pay for things that are cosmetic if you wish, but they have no effect on gameplay what so ever, and you can unlock them all by playing the game anyway.

Well, to get technical... most of the mascots cannot be unlocked and have to be irl paid for.

Sweet free dlc that's rather needed (at least with the maps), rest of the game is great from what I played but a few more maps makes it better.

My stats were reset last week, so I've been watching this closely. On their forums they have stated that a patch has been submitted and is awaiting approval.

Fact: all of the stuff they charge money for is purely cosmetic. You can't unlock weapons or fun facts with dollars. Get the eff over it.

Wow. All the content you can pay for is completely cosmetic. All the guns, armor, and other perks that actually effect the gameplay can only be unlocked via XP. Perhaps you should actually play a game before making judgments. This is one of the most fun shooting games I've played in a while, and I'm happy they're releasing so much free content!

I don't care if it's cosmetic. I know most people don't care but I do. I hate knowing that there are parts of a game that I just paid money for that I will never get to see/use unless I fork over more money and the only reason I have to is because they clicked a checkbox somewhere saying I had to pay for it. I think that's wrong and I feel that people letting these companies get away with shit like that is going to lead to some bad things down the line for this industry. So I let them know I don't the only way I can; by not buying it.

I'm glad that you are fine with them nickel and dimming content in games but I'm not. If they wanted to do that then it should have been free to play. Not both. Every one has to choose where they stand on this kind of stuff and that's where I do.

I'm getting really sick of that sword. Assholes with Heavy body type on roller skates with katanas are all over the game now, especially in the objective modes. Which means while you're capturing a point they run straight through your bullets and hit you from about ten feet away. I'm sure after a few days this will go away once people stop going crazy over the newness of it. I also still wish the game didn't have permanent health stations, I've had a few TDM games where the entire other team camps a health station in a building with narrow corridors and become nearly impossible to take out. One of those times I just ran around to get my run for 60 seconds straight and another time I did the fly with the glider for a minute because in those situations the game loses most of its appeal, especially when before half of your team would quit because of this (or worse when someone on the other team is lagging so hard they are invincible) so you are down to 2 or 3 on six with no hope of anyone joining in to help push on the other team and force them out of their camping spot. I just hope they're making enough to be able to keep tweaking the game and making improvements, because it fills the TF2 style game while throwing its own thing in.

And it's super fun to get a double kill in one dive bomb, then drop an anti-air and catch an enemy trying to dive bomb you.

Oh I can't wait to find a way to make dudes with swords eat it. I'm guessing boomerangs and armor penetrating bullets? Or fart bombs and a shotgun, either way they are hosed.

@CodeHero: I find the game amazingly fun. I play on PC (obviously from my previous post) and while the matchmaking has been HORRIBLE since launch, it's still super fun once you get into a game. I'm really hoping this patch helps with getting into games what with the join games in progress addition.

But yes, imo it's worth it for the price and how much game you get.

Everything in this game (except for the temporary XP boosts) can be acquired without spending a single dime. You do realize that, right? Every cosmetic item can be unlocked by spending the Costume Coins you earn in-game. The only reason anyone would want to spend actual money on anything is that they're too impatient, or don't have enough time, to unlock it via playing the game. It's certainly kind of gross, but as long as they're not restricting anyone's access to this stuff, one can't reasonably complain too much. If some jackass opts to spend three bucks on a hat, that's his business.

In the quick look there was a bunch of vanity pets.

@Sharpless: I know you can unlock most of them, but knowing that other people can buy their way to the top cheapens the whole experience for me. I don't care if it's just buying stuff that changes the way you look, as it's the same to me as any thing else because at the end of the day it was a part of the game to begin with that was cut and put behind a pay wall just so they could fleece you for more money. I hate, HATE, playing a game that I just bought and at any point come across an option in the game somewhere that says I need to give them even more money to access that aspect of the game. I don't care if it's for a hat, a weapon, a map or half the dam game. The moment I'm playing a game and I come across a window telling me I need to pay even more money to access a part of a game that I just bought it completely ruins any enjoyment I could have with that game and makes me not want to play it any more because it feels like a slap in the face and like I'm being ripped off.

If you like them nickel and dimming aspects of a game and are willing to let them get away with cutting out little parts of the game then more the power to you. Pay twice as much for the game then you should have because half the game is being sold in bits and pieces. I won't be, and the only way I can express my dislike for that stuff to these people is by not buying their games.

GCI is addictingly fun! I'm having a blast with it. I love the style, characters, menus, every thing about it! I haven't experienced the stat loss, but I'm sorry to hear people having to deal with that. The matchmaking will thankfully be patched with this and I can't wait.

Stop being mad on the internet. kthnxbye

Edit: Also the potential for additional revenue streams from microtransactions allows them to offer a lower price. At the production value this game has, they had to squeeze more profit than $15 per unit (less distribution) or the management at the publisher wouldn't release it. Without microtransactions this game could have been a loss for Warner Bros.

Evil as they may be microtransactions have become necessary for driving forward innovation in a game space like multiplayer team based shooters. Games that compete with the juggernaut that is CoD are a pretty big risk, publishers are just looking not to get bit in the ass and there isn't a better solution at the moment.

It's not like squeezing blood from a stone, plenty of games are succeeding with entirely free to play models. Not because they're pay to win, but because there are honest hard working developers making and good games that have strong communities. These developers aren't starving because they can count on their fans.

That's all it should come done to, though: "Is this a good game?". If you can't be bothered to rationally consider why you have these principles and make some compromises for a good game then you're just another dumb jerk on the internet.

A pretty awesome game! I wish Skyrim wasn't taking all of my attention because I'd love to play this some more!

I weep for those who complain about the micro-transaction part of the game. It is still a 100% fully playable game when you only spend the $15 to buy it. All stuff you have to buy is meaningless cards and mascots. I actually feel bad when I see people who have these items online because I know they are bad people for falling for crap like that!

They're just vanity items, the majority of which you can unlock by playing the game. There are also XP boosts for real money if you're really impatient. That's it. Try the demo at least! Dismissing it because you can purchase vanity items for real money is beyond silly.

I already said several times now why I feel that it's not silly. I'm glad it doesn't bother you but the moment I play a game and see it asking me for a credit card or to buy some special points it completely ruins it for me.

So you take a stand, dismissing Gotham City Impostors entirely because you can purchase cosmetic items (the majority of which are unlockable by playing the game) and XP boosts, while you've played and quite possibly purchased:

...all of which have micro-transactions and/or DLC which by your definition is WRONG TO SUPPORT and which YOU ARE MAKING A STAND AGAINST. I could go on, but I don't feel like looking at your achievement list anymore.

This makes you, by definition, a hypocrite - so try the damn Gotham City Impostors demo already and decide if you think it's entertaining and worth your money or not instead of dismissing it because of your hypocrisy.

I think it would be healthier for you to make a stand against that which you hate by not purchasing DLC or buying anything through micro-transactions. You'll miss out on a lot of games if you're going to skip everything that has any of these elements (which you claim that you do, but you don't, and you probably won't).

No that doesn't make me a hypocrite, because there is a difference between DLC and micro transaction systems built into a games design. With the exception of Portal 2 and TF2 all of those games you listed have DLC that came out after the game. While some of the games, like Dungeon Defenders, were disgusting with the amount of DLC they released after the fact, and how much they charged for it, when I bought the game I had no idea how they were going to support it post release and as soon as I saw how they were treating the game post release I lost all interest in it and stopped playing it.

Portal 2 was bought for me as a gift by someone who wanted to play co-op so I had no say in the purchase of that game. I just logged onto Steam one day and found the gift pop up. As for TF2, that game's free to play. I'm fine with them nickel and dimming that stuff because the game is free. While I still think it's a business model that screws over the end user and adds nothing enjoyable to the game more often then not, if the base game is free I see no problems with micro transactions being their means to make money. The biggest thing that annoys me is when they charge you for the game and throw nickel and dimming systems on top of the base game. Stuff like being able to buy your way to the top with XP boosters and straight up cutting content from the game unless you pay even more is unacceptable in my eyes and it blows my mind how many people like yourself are ok with games that do this.

I don't care if it's cosmetic or game breaking weapons/powers/unlocks because it's all the same in my eyes. It's content that should have been in the game for everyone but they put it behind a pay wall for the simple fact that they knew they could charge money for it on top of the base game. Even if they only sell it to a few hundred people that's a few hundred dollars more then they had before and they know that there is enough people like yourself that turn a blind eye to it so they have no reason to stop. The more exceptions people keeping making to allow this kind of stuff to be acceptable in games is just allowing them to push it further and further down the line until it gets real bad and they start cutting more and more content from games. I think that's wrong, is leading to a future of game design that I don't want to see come into reality, and I don't really care what you or anyone else thinks. I refuse to support games that do that. You think it's fine and dandy then have it and enjoy yourself and what it's going to do to games in the future. I don't and I can't.

Yes there is, but you didn't exactly make that distinction when you said:

In my eyes, your definition would include DLC. I guess we just misunderstood each other. So let's disregard DLC and talk about your issue with cosmetic micro-transactions!

Personally I don't mind cosmetic micro-transactions, because they don't give anyone an unfair advantage. It's completely optional and not at all integral to the game experience. I see where you are coming from with content being withheld, but cosmetic items do not equal "meaningful content" to me, and I think there is a definite distinction to be made between cosmetic and game breaking micro-transactions (such as more powerful guns or what have you), because the bottom line is:

Guy with more money shouldn't have an advantage over guy with less money because he has spent more money. This is not what's going on in Gotham City Impostors, by the way. You can't "buy your way to the top".

I still think that in order to protest against micro-transactions, you'd be better off just not buying anything through them. Dismissing a game because it also has those elements will, if anything, make people think you're not interested in the type of game sold rather than the extra optional content which I don't think is what you were trying to accomplish.

That's where it's up to the individual to decide what they feel is acceptable or not. In my view being able to buy stuff that boosts how quickly you gain levels is an unfair advantage because the higher end stuff is always more powerful then the low end stuff. That means you can buy your way to the top by purchasing all these xp boosters and you are now suddenly a higher level then most people and you can completely destroy them because you now have access to all the high end gear while the majority of the people who don't spend that money can't even compete with how fast the rich guy is ranking up. It drives me nuts in games with XP boosters seeing the top of the leader board always being the guy with a level that's two to three times every one else in the game and you have no way of knowing if he is just good and earned it, or if he just bought his way to the top. Then as a player it makes me not want to play the game because I know that no matter how good I get I will never be able to get near the top because that will always be reserved for the high level people with all the high end perks/unlocks. If you buy those XP boosters you didn't earn that high level stuff by being good, you just unlocked it by having a more disposable income then the other guys. Sure this becomes less of an issue once the game has been out for some time, but it still leaves a bad taste in my mouth because it cheapens the reward and accomplishment of getting to the high level stuff myself knowing that some rich guy can just buy it and put in half the work to get the same thing.

As for cosmetic versus in game weapons; I agree that weapons being microtransactioned are the most egregious of the two, but I personally get just as much joy out of being able to use costume creators to make my guy look awesome or by unlocking little decorations and seeing them on him while in game. So for me, knowing that there are parts of the games character creator that I will never get to use/see unless I fork over more money then the base game just leaves me feeling like I only got half a game and is to me the same thing as getting the game and only having half the weapons. Then when I'm in the actual creator it just drives me nuts ever time I'm in there cycling through costume options and seeing rows upon rows of padlocks and money signs next to all the good stuff.

While this game may not be as bad at it as others, it still goes against my principles of what I feel is acceptable in games so I won't be buying it. Which is unfortunate because it looked like it could have been fun for a week or two, but I just don't agree with the idea of microtransactions being in games unless you are making it from the ground up to be F2P. Everything else just feels like a money grab to me, and I just would never be able to enjoy the game because of it.

@Galiant: As for the part about buying the game and not buying any of the microtransactions being the best protest against it, I disagree with that too. lol To me that sends them the signal saying that they can cut content from the game and people will still buy it. Then even if only 2-3% of the player base buys the cut content that's all profit. So why would they have any desire to stop cutting content and putting it behind a pay wall when they get just as many sales? Whether I like it or not there will always be enough rich people out there that mindlessly buy shit without thinking of what it is telling the developers they can get away with and it still be profitable for them. Even if the 97% of other people that never buy a single thing are screaming about how they hate it why would they listen? They already got the money from them for buying the game so all they care about now is catering to the other 2-3% that's still buying stuff.

@crusader8463: Gotham City Impostors doesn't actually have any of the issues you describe, though - a level 100 player isn't more powerful than a level 30 or anything like that. You can unlock all costumes pieces by playing the game.

There are a few unique calling card backgrounds and mascots that you can purchase for real money (calling cards are what the enemy sees when you kill them, mascots are little pets that hover above your shoulder that don't actually have any stats or functions). But things like the nuclear whale you get by killing twenty people in a row without dying - yes, a nuclear whale - you can't buy that, you have to earn it. So you'll know which calling cards are the bought ones and which are earned.

You're missing out on a fun game based on something that won't actually impact your experience with it, which is a bummer. Don't support micro-transactions if you're against it, I'm all for that - but Gotham City Impostors is not actually guilty of keeping any valuable content from you after your initial purchase - and there's free DLC coming, you know, from the trailer which brought us here in the first place.

I'm done advertising the game now, by the way - I just want more people to play it because I feel that it's well made and at a reasonable price. I'm thinking I might actually purchase something extra or gift the game to a friend to support the people that made it, since I already got my money's worth and I want them to create more content.
