Horrible living space, live and work in your living space in a small tight PC cubicle for long hours each day playing the same game everyday. Not an ideal lifestyle for me.

Yet somehow it seems right when you got a sports team that does the very same thing? I just dont see any difference between this and a professional sports team that live and breathe the game every day. They get paid to play the game professionally... same thing.

Eh, it's a different culture. Sure, to a lot of people it might not seem like a job, but it truely is extremely physically and mentally demanding. You almost never see a pro-gamer who is out of shape. In fact, there's very, very few. Many, many pro gamers in korea are idols for their bodies as well.

Massive fan clubs, fan girls, autographs, tv commercials, product endorsement, sponsorship, travelling, big stages, interviews, constant physical and mental training, constantly learning, adapting, scouting and coping to new styles, new builds, team meetings, discussions, research and commitment. It's a lot of work. It really is a full time job.

The definition of job is simply the application of ones skills or abilities to produce income.

The players play to win the big prizes, but remember, that is not their only source of income, and normally is not the greatest. Progamers have salaries, and are paid for their efforts. Sponers, mostly media corporations and technology corporations pay big money to teams to advertise their products and brand name.

It's a really amazing environment. There really is nothing that differentiates a western sport from Korean starcraft.  And yes, they are on cereal boxes.

Try not to be so closed minded. It's 2010, You're on a website where people's "jobs" are to talk about video games and play them. You're being extremely hypocritical and you probably don't even notice it.

agreed, i don't think i could pull off gaming as a job, partly because of the hours... and i don't know i would think that if i was paid to play it, i might not enjoy it as much? Bur props to them for making it, although i heard the average career is like 6-7 years :(.

Thoroughly enjoying these videos.  I'd like to see more things about competitive gaming in the future.  Maybe have Jeff do something on EVO and SBO for 2D fighting games.  That'd be good stuff too.

I imagine things like sex, going out, playing sports, sightseeing, going at the beach or hiking are strange to these guys.
Knowing that the majority of normal people doesn't know what to do more to escape the cubicles and this robotic, claustrophobic, corporate style of work, I feel really sorry for these people.
I also feel sorry for them as gamers, having to play hours upon hours the same freaking game. That's stupid and a sure way to hate videogames in the future. Videogames are for fun, a distraction, not to be obsessed about. The idiots that came up with this idea need to get their ass kicked, because they're ruining their lives and the love for videogames.
Just imagine that the Blizzard guys that created this shit are probably enjoying themselves somewhere in Hawaii or the Bahamas, while these poor souls stay trapped in a bunker playing their shit. That's disgusting.

@xaveri: The difference I see is that in Athletic sports the body needs a break. I know from being a runner (and this relates to soccer, american football, and so on), that a 7 hour workout a day would do more harm then good. Athletes need rest. The real work for the pro's of sports out of practice is eating and sleeping, and other living habits.

For pro gamers like these guys they don't need rest. The only risk is burning out and on this level of competitive play you simply do not burn out anymore. Also there is no real off season to recover like athletes have.

What I am saying is the pro gamers actually have it harder then the professional athletes because of the nature of the competition. Pro gaming does not require rest for the body or mind like for sports.

@DG991:  Yeah... it definitely looks bleaker than the sports field but keep in mind that in Korea it's very hard to get a job... About 4/5 people still can't get a job after graduating from college. So for those people I imagine it to be pretty good.

Well-produced, well-prepared coverage. Really enjoyed it.

Apropos of nothing, I'm curious as to whether GB runs single- or double-system sound. They seem to employ a lot of lavaliere and handheld mics for news-gathering operations like this one; I wonder if any mixing is involved.

You are aboslutely wrong. Pro StarCraft players in South Korea have groopies, sponsors, tousands of fans and they also reguraly work out to keep themselves in  shape, take part in touraments every month and give interviews. And all this they do together with some of their best friends. And you say all of this is bad? Sure, they might not have much time for themselves, but I know a lot of people who would do anything to have all of the above.

Those dorms. Yeesh. I wonder how many times those guys leave the house...  That tall guy talking about how yesterday was special because they went to buy a pillow. Wow.

Anyways, cool as hell, Brad. This is a very intense subculture that I know nothing about. However, the video helped convey "the vibe" when the OGS manager started talking about how deep the players go in their pre-match research. Thanks for exploring gaming culture outside the anglo-american bubble.

Place me firmly in the camp of "What kind of loser moves to Korea and plays Starcraft 12 hours per day, every day, so they can be the best at a video game?"

If it makes them happy, bravo, but I just can't see it as anything else than a pathetic aspiration and a gigantic waste of life.

Lol, you be trollin, right? Because I'd much rather play StarCraft 2 for a living than, well, any "real" job.  Sports are thought to be "for fun" too until you get into the professional leagues - then it is about winning.  The love for video games isn't being ruined - its being "taken to the next level" so to speak.

Besides, playing the same game all the time is only a foreign idea to people who play either mediocre games or single player games - or have a very small attention span - IMO.  But the truly great games have re-playability for many many years.  All one has to say as an example is "Chess" to really make this point.  Chess is a game that has been around for hundreds of years, still played competitively today, is a game, and is taken very seriously in its upper echelons.  Same goes for games like StarCraft 2 - but since video games are technology driven they have to - at some point - make new iterations to series in order to stay relevant.  Either way, I think what they get to do is awesome and that they are enjoying something that many people dream of.  Some people dream of hiking every mountain, some people want to be rock stars, some want to be astronauts and some want to be pro gamers.  Is that really such a difficult idea to wrap your head around?
