I find it rather odd when they discredit Star Wars games as being for kids. Of course they are - Star Wars always was. Even the original movies were made with kid's toy tie-ins explicitly in mind, and that certainly didn't change with the prequels or animated series. The problem kinda is that the people who saw Star Wars in the 70's probably were kids then, but somehow expect the franchise to have matured with them as it has continued strong in the decades since then.

But the core audience has never been the fans of the 70's movies, it always was kids - which is why George Lucas has no problems with updating the old movies to stay relevant with kids today, rather than staying true to the nostalgia of it's old fans.

No, everyone liked the old Star Wars. Kids just happened to be on that group too. The new Star Wars was supposed to be for everyone as well.....none where meant as movies for children. Unless you think political intrigue, romance and limb mutilation is what children like the most. ( they probably do like the limb mutilation)

They made toys, sure. they made toys for the Alien and Predator movies as well.

The new movies failed to set the same wide net, so they went back to children. It's easier.

Star Wars is not Pokemon.

Also, I don't think they were "discrediting" it. Patrick's words were, "It's not for us."

Beyond that, making a game for kids is no excuse for making a crappy game-- much like making a Star Wars movie for kids is no excuse for making a crappy Star Wars movie.

Toy Story 3 and Cars 2 are games that were, arguably, made for children. Regardless, they're extremely well made games. Assuming that kids can't tell the difference will only get you so far.

Love all the John Drake up in this video.

As usual it looks like Jeff and Brad brought their young cousin to an event.

It might look that way in this video, but he's not that tall. I met both of them at the Whiskey Media Block Party after the BLLSL. Brad's around my height, maybe a bit shorter, and I'm between 5' 9" and 5' 10". Jeff is definitely tall though.

Where is that video of Brad playing Trials HD? It does exist somewhere right? I have seen it before, I think, and want to see it again. Or did I imagine seeing it? What is reality?

Awesome video. I'm really excited for the new Trials game even if I couldn't get that last Endurance achievement in the first one.

And even though most of the Star Wars Kinect game footage looked pretty bad, I can kind of get behind the Podracer stuff because it looked like a HD version of what I remember the N64 game being. I'm sure it won't have much of the customization of the N64 game but that clip was pretty nostalgic.

Glad to see Halo 4 actually seems to have quality visuals. Reach had some insultingly ugly graphics for a full price AAA title when it came out.

I would not fit in the frame of that shot with jeff-brad-pat length wise. Being 6'6 you would just see my jaw.

My favorite part of that entire video = "Hmm.. haven't killed a fox yet...." ".............. and.... now i've killed a fox"

Star Wars is not Pokemon.

The political stuff isn't exactly in heavy focus in the films, especially not until the prequels, but maybe in the expanded universe stuff, and Pokemon isn't exactly the only kids stuff out there (there are plenty of non-seizure inducing live action kids shows, especially before the 80's), I'd say it's probably comparable to Pixar today - the target demographic is kids (pre-teens, not necessarily 4 year olds) or young teens, but there's a bit more there to keep parents and older people entertained. As far as I know, George Lucas cited 50's live action sci-fi adventure shows like Flash Gordon, as well as traditional heroic tales as heavy influences, which generally were also intended for teen/pre-teen audiences. As for the dismemberment, there are pretty much only two somewhat graphic shots throughout the 6 films, and the modern ratings system had barely been etablished by 1977 (PG-13 didn't appear until 1984, 7 years after Star Wars. and what PG meant was fluctuating a lot throughout the 70's), some of the more graphic scenes were added in order to avoid getting the lowest rating, as G rated movies don't tend to do as well as PG movies - and there's nothing stopping parents from letting their kids watch PG movies anyway. Sure, there have been the odd toys made in relation to movies intended for older audiences, but there's no denying Star Wars has always been incredibly successful as a toy brand, from it's launch in 1977 up to today. I know there are interviews with Lucas and other ILM guys out there that explicitly state that most of the stuff in the movies were designed in such a way that they could easily be made into toys, with a lot of it being planned to launch at the same time as the movie. I could certainly try to dig them up if you need sources for that, though I don't have them around right now.

Great coverage guys!

Steel Battallion looks really really fun if the controls are accurate enough. Trials is absolutely beautiful and the multiplayer seems super fun. Can't wait for more Halo 4, also.

@fisk0: I would buy the toys and I am a 20 year old. Star Wars appeals to all the age groups, not just kids. This Kinect game, as with most Kinect games, seems to have kids in its focus. The platform and genre of the game is what makes it for kids not its subject matter. But I do agree, Star Wars is very appealing for children, without a doubt.

You misunderstand, that the target demographic is kids doesn't mean older people can't enjoy it, but that they aren't who the movies and games are the primary intended audience for. I've tried to avoid to put any value judgments on that throughout my posts, but I know there's a bias against something intended for kids or general audiences (which is why a lot of movies throw in some impromptu nudity, cursing or mild violence in order to avoid the dreaded G rating - like the burned corpses and dismemberment in Star Wars).

A game that seems like it might be good using Kinect? I have heard this story before. I was just using Kinect Fun Labs last night, so I like it, I am just tired of hearing of the imaginary awesome games for it.

Who is the kid skipping school that Jeff interviews? Why am I listening to him?

G ratings aren't dreaded. No one avoids a G rating. G movies rake in more cash than R rated movies could ever hope to. The "General" audience is the largest audience. Unless their specific goal is to make something explicit or provocative, directors always prefer the lower rating.

Dreamworks and Pixar have made a mint catering to children and their parents. People are down on Star Wars Kinect because it appears to be a bunch of half baked ideas cobbled together in an effort to deliver on the promise of a game called Star Wars Kinect.

Stormtroopers dancing to awful parody songs isn't a bad idea because it's supposed to appeal to children more than adults; it's a bad idea because it's a really bad idea.

There's an enormous gulf between making something that mostly appeals to kids and making something that will only appeal to very, very young children. It's like Hugo versus Barney the Dinosaur.

Wreckateer and Steel Battalion look like decent enough reasons to dust off the Kinect.
