In this episode: torture, eating sentient species body parts, lies and desecration of things holy. The party alignment is on a slippery slope ... of blood.

The people who scoff at pen and paper RPGs are missing out on the best thing Giantbomb is currently producing. This is always hilarious, mostly due to Vinny's roleplaying.

It's really incredible to me that this even exists. Thank you, duders, so much.

@tackystuff: I actually spent about $400 on a couple new pairs of glasses today. This pair are a few years old and even the superglue holding them together has dried up. Hoping for some new stuff next week!

The only thing I'm not a fan of is how much you move on the grid seems to be arbitrary outside of battle. It should be based on a dice roll or something, not just "hey there's a chest 12 squares away, I'm going to push my avatar right across this play field."

If there's no battle going on and no enemies nearby, rolling for movement and actions would take approximately forever to do for a five-person group outside of combat, imo. Better to just let them do what they want so long as everyone has a chance to do something.

That's true, but it still feels weird. Maybe like 3 moves per turn, or I dunno something. It makes the squares feel useless. But hey I've never played tabletop games like these, so what do I know.

Ha! Great times on this one, I like your approach to winging the rules @rorie. The last thing any DM or Player wants to do is spend significant time sussing out every little detail that won't mater on the next turn while at the table. There are far too many goblins that need taunted or their hands messed up for that!

Wait, am I to understand that there are video games that will simulate such a tabletop experience? Temple of Elemental Evil or something?

I want to do D & D so badly but don't know anyone who wants to teach a newbie in the NYC area.

@liquidprince: Whenever there aren't any real consequences, the game doesn't have to be heavily structured. There are indeed rules in the books for stuff like how many feet/squares a character can move over certain periods of time, but with each square representing 5 feet, and each character moving at rates between 20 feet and 40 feet per round, and each round representing about 6 seconds "game time," any movement inside an ordinary room is pretty trivial. Keeping track of too much stuff, while attractive, just isn't practical. Any time there are consequences, though, like combat or a time-based puzzle, you might start counting squares. When players know the base rules better you can begin to layer in more complex tracking methods to increase tension, but otherwise it's just best to make rough guesses and push the game forward.

I spend too much time thinking about pen-and-paper RPG rules.

Good stuff. Lots of loosey goosey rules with the rules and stuff, but that's not a big deal as this is obviously the V-Bomb show lol.

As Temple of Elemental Evil's no. 1 spokesman on these forums, I can confirm that it's all the fun of D&D tactical combat without the pesky requirement for other human beings. It's also requires a fan mod to not be totally broken and has an incredibly boring first hour full of fedex quests. But seriously, if you like what you saw here but don't want to constantly flip through the rules manual, this is your game.

@liquidprince: Turns don't exist outside of combat in D&D. That's why you roll for initiative when combat begins to establish initial turn order. It's not really a board game, and any time you're not in combat all the rules are basically up to the DM's discretion (and even in combat DM's can bend the rules to make the game more interesting or more fair).

There are no strict turns outside of combat, though. If there is no combat or any other sort of engagement happening, then the players are free to do what they want, and if any of their actions would trigger something, the GM will let them know.

The rules for games such as this explicitly account for the difference between in-combat and out-of-combat behavior. The squares aren't "useless", movement and interaction are just handled differently while out of combat; they become much more free-form. I can assure you, this is by design, and isn't just @rorie and company playing fast and loose.
