Huh, I wonder how they will be able to check properly, aside from asking the person for specifics to see that he's not just saying it, but excuses can be made up.

Not that I see this being an issue, considering how their games are DRM free and if people didn't want to buy them they would just pirate them in the first place. Buying it from GoG then claiming it's not working on purpose just to get a refund would be phenomenally ass backwards.

@tennmuerti: Yeah. I think they crunched the numbers and realized the money they'd lose on fake crash reports pales in comparison to the good will they'd procur. (Plus more people are willing to buy games if they can get refunds.)

I always look to see if a game is on Gog first before steam, just because its fucking DRM free. also because they are pretty good willed. For instance when every one started hearing about Dark Matter's ending they out right said that they would give refunds. As opposed to steam. Granted it shouldnt have been sold on ether service in the first place. But +1 Gog for taking the initiative to fix the problem.

How about Witcher 2 crashing about 50 percent of the time every time I hit the Load/Save menu?

I can imagine this being an absolute nightmare for the guys responsible helping people with their games. What is stopping someone from buying a game, finishing the game then saying it doesn't work and to everything they suggest saying that it still doesn't?

Does this also cover instances where your machine is underspec to play the game? That would more than likely make me more willing to pay higher prices for stuff, as there would be less risk involved as to whether or not I'll actually be able to play the game I'm buying.

Awesome. Gog is already the best of the digital distributors (not from a library standpoint but overall delivery/features/user sensibilties) and hopefully this will get the word out to more people.

Heh... good choice of Interstate 76 in the opening shot. While GOG's version runs on Windows 7 (which is more than can be said of the original), it is incredibly flaky - at best.

Shacknews wrote this about people taking advantage of the service:

"Refund systems can be abused, of course, so GOG warns not to take the mickey. "How many games can you ask for money back? We're humans here, so there's no hard numbers. If it seems like you're exploiting us, we'll let you know and tell you that this will be your final refund offer from us."

So they are kind of covering there asses too. It's still a very cool thing of them to do.

This is great for me. There have been several games that were just totally broken and don't work because I have a shitty Nvidia optimus thing that has basically been abandoned and doesn't get any fixes. Fez, Hotline Miami, and some others only gave me half an hour of game time before totally breaking.

That's only fair. No matter how awesome a website is, there will always be people who are assholes (like the people who pirate Humble Indie Bundles)

While that is a bit of an extreme, I find the sentiment to be rational. I own games on 5 different download services now (Steam, GOG, Amazon Digital, Origin, Uplay), and at some point its gets really damn annoying keeping track of what I own from where, not to mention dealing with bunch of different client programs. Out of these, I have by far the most games on Steam (because it had such a significant head start) and I also find it to be the easiest of use of the clients - I'm not alone in this. So it's natural that most people want their stuff in one place to avoid all that headache.

I would not avoid a game that I really, really want to play (i.e. Mass Effect 3 is Origin only and I still bought it), but given the choice I will buy a game on Steam, even if I end up paying more; simply because that's already what I use for 90% of my games and the convenience of having everything in one place is worth it.

Do you have a lot of saves? If yes, you have to delete a bunch of the saves. I found the game to run better (more stable) with less than ~10 saves.

Also, I see the irony here with CD Projekt RED being the parent company of GOG and all.

one of these days I'll actually buy something from GOG... but oh god, Steam and Humble basically occupies all of my PC gaming mind share that I don't actually want anything that GOG offers... unless they sell Witcher 3 exclusively... except CD Projekt aren't run by assholes, so most likely I'll never buy something there... god damn it I need to remember GOG!

@beachthunder: The reason for the name change wasn't because of their marketing stunt which honestly I don't blame them for. They are a business and they didn't really do anything wrong. Either way 2 years after the stunt they changed their names to GOG because they started taking AAA games, not just old games. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GOG.com

@ilikepopcans:

Origin in my experience takes 2+ months to get a refund even though their policies clearly state 1 week. I'd rather see someone say "this is going to take a while but you will get your money back." and have that be true compared to "You will get your money back in a week." and while I eventually got my money back it was 2 months of waiting, not the week I was told.

@vessel28: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GOG.com a marketing stunt where they pretended to close the site but not really so people would talk about it. It was closed because they were taking the site out of beta and it had to be closed for some time while it was rolled out.they figured that if they were taking down the site they might as well try to make some marketing off it so they put a message up saying GOG was closed. This implied it was closed for good and it wasn't. People flipped out and was like "NOOOOOO" while gog turned around and then reopened with their new site.

They totally gave me a refund for that broken-ass Realms of Arkania remake, but that was a pretty specific case. I've heard similar horror stories about X-Rebirth, so I wonder why they won't do it this time.

Also GOG is the best.

@cybertification:

I don't refuse to buy non-Steam games but all other things equal, I will often go for a Steam copy unless there is some DLC extra or physical good that I want. It's just convenient to have it all tied into one platform with the social integration and everything, though it does have its disadvantages (since its introduction, Offline Mode was very unreliable for me until earlier this year).

That said, I love GoG and the way they do things.

It's interesting that they picked Interstate '76 for the demonstration of a game breaking, because that game is very broken on modern systems and they haven't been able to get it to run on them. It's one of the few games in their catalog that doesn't have Window 7 listed as supported. I think I've just about figured out how to get it playing as nicely as possible with 7, but it's been a slog.

Love this site, personally my favourite DRM, they give you great extras, and pretty much every problem is solved by the awesome community in the forums and so on.

BTW: If Interstate is non-workable I'm fairly certain that's because it's a Directx 3 game which I'm almost certain that all versions of DX below 6 are not included in current distributions.

I don't refuse to buy games that aren't on steam I just don't know how to find games that aren't on steam. I wish I knew of a store that had other good games for sale cause steams library is lacking in some respects. And gog dosen't particularly interest me cause i'm not that into old pc games. Unless vinny is playing it.
