This is exactly what I wanted to say. The character is basically Walton Goggins.

I am still kind of disappointed that they have three protagonists and not one of them is a woman. You'd think after five games and now seven protagonists (one in 1-4, and three in 5) they'd have figured out a way to write a violent crime story about a girl. Don't ya think?

@quirkwood: They're a lot harder than you think. GTA leans in a slightly more realistic direction than Saints Row did, even from the first game in that series. Assuming you would put that up as evidence, anyway. The closest we have ever gotten in GTA was Elizabeta in IV. And she did not seem like a fun character to play as. At all.

Lazlow had a bit on his podcast late last year, where they were riffing on footage from the Gathering of the Juggalos. It was hilarious and oh-so-sad at the same time. This was inevitable.

Anyone else think that last apartment-scene looked awfully familiar to the one in Tarantino's Jackie Brown?

@greggd: I do understand that writing such a character would be more difficult, but I imagine there are plenty of women in prisons around the world who the writers could draw on for inspiration. Disregarding the first two games, they've had since 2001 to trawl through newspapers for sources of inspiration.

Personally I don't think it's because it'd be too hard to write I just think it'd be harder to market in a sector still mostly dominated by men and all they want is to make a buck. It's just lazy, greedy and continues to reinforce misogyny in video games.

I think if they wanted to write a story about a female protagonist they would have. And they should write what they want to, because it will come out better that way. A female protagonist would be nice, I always like to play as ladies, but if it was forced I'd rather they not do it at all.

The choices in music for all three of these trailers makes me confident in the direction R* is taking this. We sometimes forget how good they are at making this stuff.

Exactly my thoughts. Also, claiming that because they've never had a female protagonist is enforcing a greater misogynistic tone for the industry is fucking laughable.

I know, he doesn't even sound like him! God, I swear people want to see things that aren't there. People were claiming that Michael was Tommy Vercetti after the first trailer hit.

@mortal_sb: You know, man, I agree with you, but you're sort of jumping the gun here. Rockstar does have a bad history of presenting its humor through predictable two dimensional archetypes in lieu of developing their characters for dramatic heft. However, the fact that the characters that are being introduced here fit into archetypes does not mean they are two-dimensional. I'm not telling you to drink the Kool-Aid, but at least don't judge it by the packet it comes in.

People always complain about GTA protagonists who proclaim they want to get out of the game, while the player runs over eight old ladies on the way to kill a warehouse full of drug dealers. This guy is their answer to that.

Even the other two characters clearly enjoy the criminal lifestyle. Quite a big turnaround from Niko and John Marston.

I'm excited that GTA5 is bringing back music that I actually want to listen to. I have fond memories of songs from Vice City and San Andreas but I can't name even a single song that was in GTA4.

it was the right direction for rockstar but still had the same satirical shtick to it. they always have to have those overblown, comical characters like the potions vendor to do funny conversations or to get the main character riled up. they need to get out of their comfort zone or hire writers with a little bit more perspective.

No, they don't, GTA is all about the overblown comical characters, if you took them out, it would lose what makes it GTA.

they trailer was the same exact thing like gta. they have to do everything over the top, style over substance. it really put me off and that's double sad, because i LOVE mp 1 and 2. if i want to play a serious ass max payne game, i'll play 1 and 2.

because i think that rockstar has incredible potential/track record and super talented people but always try to appeal the broadest audience possible (sure, to sell a lot you have to make a lot of people happy). they have to sacrifice a lot of ideas in exchange to deliver the products they are currently delivering and i think it would be super cool if they would get out of their comfort zone, in which they are since 7-8 years.

There's no such thing as a serious open world game. It is an inherently ridiculous genre. The more open world games realize that, the better they tend to be.

You should check out No More Heroes. Coincidentally enough, it also has a character named Trevor who is very Johnny Knoxville-like.
