@Siphillis:  I wouldn't go that far, considering that they are meant to appeal to a larger audience than just those who follow video game news websites. I think its excellent marketing, I've seen enough of the game. I just want to play it. So live action commercials are kind of refreshing in this case.

@Jack_Daniels:  I hate to sound like a huge nerd but your thinking of spartan 2's In REACH you play as a spartan 3. They were selected at a much older age this was all in Halo: Ghosts of Onyx

That is one weak ass looking kid. And a pretty stupid trailer in general. Injections, flying into space, riding in a truck...magically a spartan! In fact, he looks skinnier and weaker after the injections than before...

Didn't have the same effect on me as the ODST shorts. This trailer seems to rely on the viewer actually knowing what the hell happened at Reach, which I assume the average person dosen't. I've played every Halo game but don't have the foggiest idea about the background fiction, make me care Bungie!

I do love the production value in these trailers though, I want a Halo mini series in the vein of Band of Brothers, produced in the same way as these trailers.

Why post the short version when the full 2:30 minute one is already out

This is the kind of stuff I've been DYING to see ever since I first read Fall of Reach!  To be honest, I think that this director fully captured exactly what I had thought all this would look like.  Excellent excellent excellent job!

I'm so fucking psyched for Halo: Reach that I can't even describe it.  After hating Halo 3 so damn much and enjoy ODST, Reach is the Halo game I've been waiting for.

lolno.  SPARTAN-IIIs are all orphans from the Covenant war, chosen at ages from 6 to about 12. Orphans were chosen so no parents would notice missing children and the Spartans would have mor emotivation to fight the Covenant. The picture of his parents would be extrmely meaningful. "
All of this leads to me being really interested in Carter's character.

@General_D23: Notice he's a Spartan III (3). Master Chief was a Spartan II (2). One of the books talks about how the Spartan III's were genetically altered clones. The idea was that while Spartan II's were great they were a huge time investment, so the III series was a quickly made and expendable alternative. The III series were started shortly after the Spartan II's first combat missions, in secret. There's also rumors that the Sergeant was a Spartan I, hence him surviving the flood. Also wow I'm a huge nerd.

They're not clones, they're like the spartan IIs, genetically superior but they weren't as expensive to make.
Those rumors are moronic, since Spartan (I)s were the historical greek spartans. Spartan IIs are the first cyborg/Halo canon spartans.

lol, read the books. Sgt. Johnson actually was part of the SPARTAN-I project, though it wasn't usually called that. They just experimented with various enhancements on special/black ops soldiers, nothing close to the juicy juice that went into the II and III series. Surviving the Flood was the result of his nerves spending too much time around plasma nades, and has absolutely nothing to do with this.

The main difference with SPARTAN-IIIs are that they are much cheaper to make and arm, with a higher success rate after surgery as well. Expendable shock (super) troopers. They're also recruited from orphaned adolescents who have lost their families to the Covenant (hence motivation to fight), rather than the genetically perfect children that the IIs were - that's why the kid in the video remembers his family. Physically, the IIs are superior, although in the big picture it doesn't matter since you can make so many more of the IIIs.

Yeah, I'm a Halo nerd :P

So the spartan enhancements turn your eyes blue? Does it also turn your hair blond and your skin white if it isn't already? Lol, as soon as the eyes changed, I got an "Aryan Superman" stormtrooper vibe.

this.
Carter, the guy from the video, is the leader of Noble. The player will be Noble - 6 the latest addition to the team, probably with no real identity i think.

Also seeing this made me wish they made the spartans a bit more fragile, as in that some spartans have quirky behaviour. I mean they get injected with a shit load of chemicals and have to perform 100% all the time and barely if any have time for themselves. A little AWOL would be refreshing.

I think you're contradicting yourself.  First you're saying that the commercial is targeted towards people who don't follow video game websites.  But then you say the live-action video is great for you because you've "seen enough of the game," presumably because you do follow video game websites.

So if the commercial was not targeted towards people who have already seen the game in action, but rather for people who haven't, why not show actual game play?

He isn't the character you play as in Reach.  Noble 6, the Spartan you do play as, will probably never show his face, just like the Rookie and Master Chief.

Isn't this a little inaccurate? I thought Spartans were made during youth, and not conscripted as adults? How come he has parents? Actually, if he's an orphan, how come he has a high-tech photo of his parents? Wouldn't they be trained to cast away such frivolous things?

And isn't the enhancing process more painful than just injecting some fluids? I'm pretty sure Spartans go through bio-mechanical enhancements including grafting stuff to their bones or injecting some kinda bone-enhancing serum INTO the bone?

If you had read the other comments, you would have seen that this has been answered already. At least you got some facts, instead of absolutely none like several other people here.

You would be totally correct if this was a SPARTAN II, like John-117 (Master Chief), But this is the making of a SPARTAN III. They where orphans from the Covenant War, hence the photo of his parents. They where also much easier to make, cost less, but as a result wasn't as perfect as the SPARTAN II's. Which didn't matter that much as they where more cost efficient.

But I am glad to see more people who know how a SPARTAN II was made at least, so I give you that. To see fans of a game know nothing of the backstory is kinda weird. Aren't people curious anymore? Doesn't people read books?

But when I think of war orphans I think of them as having lost all of their belongings INCLUDING photos of family and loved ones.
