was that the this gen or next gen version?

Definitely next-gen. Didn't the fabric physics and sharp shadows give it away?

That stuff has been do-able for some time now.

On PC, you mean.

Seems very much like the old RE4 early prototypes. Very interesting. Not digging that aiming reticle though.

I guess, I actually haven't seen any of that game, but I hear it's great.

I saw a slightly extended version of this at Gamescom and I came away thinking that this game looked really bad. Some of those animations looked terrible, especially the main character's running animation, the chase sequence with "chainsaw guy" looks really fake (chainsaw guy had plenty of oportunities to kill the main character, but shambled and prat-falled his way through that entire demo) and the whole thing looks WAY too similar to RE4, especially that Perth house segment.

Also, I had to laugh at the Gamescom trailer because, if you look at the trailer at around the 10:33 mark where the main character shoots a zombie (or whatever) on the stairs and then the demo cuts away to something else, it's because the zombie falls down on the stairs and his hands float in mid-air.

I have to admit, I expected much more from Shinki Mikami, but this looks like a derivative RE4 copy -- a bad one too!

When he shot the heads off the enemies in the basement I was fully expecting tentacle things to pop out and they keep on coming at you. The game looks far too much like RE5, but that first 4-5 minutes of the prologue were GREAT. Once he got the gun everything went downhill.

I was hoping it would've been a little more divorced from the Resident Evil 4/5 style of gameplay, not that those games are bad or anything. Maybe that's just me wanting something more like the earlier Resident Evil games.

But seeing the part where he burned one of the enemies like in REmake might give some hope that we'll actually be able to explore and revisit places instead of constantly being pushed forward to new places.

Looks good for the most part. They certainly have the horror aspect down from an atmospheric and monster perspective, but once the shooting came, while it reminded me of RE4 in a way due to the part where he was trying to keep those guys out; the look of the setting and well, guns, the shooting just didn't look that good.

I'm not adverse to it being there, but I hope since it's there, even if it could perhaps be a small part, that it's good. Some of it was cliche, like hiding in lockers, and from a trailer point of view as well. I knew from the get-go that something at the end would attack or outright kill the protagonist and then cut to the title, and I wish that weren't so, but that has nothing to do with the game.

I have a hard time telling if this would only work as a game, or if this would work as a horror film as well, but as a game, it seems like it's one that'll work, which is great. I'm not a fan of horror films; as you watch them, they're not that great, though after when you can conjure up in your imagination, applying those creepy things in reality, then it can get spooky, but I love horror games because they often have a fantastic atmosphere that you just want to experience.

Games to me also have an alternate effect than film; when I play horror games, they can freak me out in the moment, which films just don't really do, but when I'm done playing, it has no effect on me, which films do.

The shooting was pretty terrible in RE4 and RE5 but people still praise those games to high heaven.

There's something about the look of animations and the camera controls that seems a little off. Am i wrong to say that?

Finally the real re5 is coming out.

Right?

Exactly what I wanted to say, this looks like the sequel to RE4 that we never got.

Wow, this looks so video gamey... the illogic... its is a bit tough to accept. A huge hulking giant with a chainsaw can't chase down a single man with a wounded leg? The giant's pathing and the way the camera fails to swing around looks stiff (like they did in the RE games). So many of these trophes have been done to death in numerous other survivor horror and horror games, I was hoping that Mikami would use the fresh start at Bethesda to do some new stuff but I guess not.

@sooty: I don't think most people would agree with that. Perhaps you mean because you can't move while you aim over the shoulder, but in that sense, that's the only way I could agree. The shooting in this aside from maybe the animations of the enemies just doesn't look good, or maybe it was just the terrible crosshair. Furthermore, your reply to me makes it seem as if I were hating on the game, and that's not what I was doing.

That cabin sequence is straight out of RE4, minus the part where if you shoot Luis enough times you get a game over. You've got to do more than that to excite me Mikami. Still cautiously optimistic.

I'd take a new RE4 with great graphics any day. I loved that game. This seems even more intense though.

Same thing I was thinking the whole time. He slashed the guy's leg, then instead of just following up, he locks him in an unnecessarily elaborate and easily escapable trap room. Almost every single thing in that demo, I feel like I've seen a hundred times before, done better. Nothing about this looked bad, just really tired.

Why does the main character look JUST like Booker Dewitt?

Even the outfit. Almost the Voice.

@everettescott: Yeah, if this is next-gen it could use some higher resolution textures. Especially on the character, something you will see constantly.

It's for both current consoles and next-gen which explains the the very inconsistent texture resolution and quality. The game looks ok and I know and there's still time left in development but I hope to see a boost in the performance department, that framerate was looking rough.

I honestly dont have a good feeling about this game. Everytime the game comes up its "Father of RE4 makes new survival horror game" and then every footage seems to ape RE4 in one way or another. I dont know if Mikami is being pressured to remake RE 4 for a new western pub or Mikami is trying to please a western pub by making his most critically acclaimed game.

You have to think that for all his brilliance with RE 4 and Godhand, he never made anything close to what a western publisher would consider a success and when one comes knocking with bags of money asking him to make a game for them it must play on his mind about what expectations are needed to be met. How better to meet those expectations than to re-create his most successful game to date. That would be troubling to me to come from that mindset.

Or maybe Im wrong and maybe Beth heard about Mikami wanting to do a survival horror game like RE 4 but undo some of the mistakes he made with that game and Beth said: "You know what dude, we really love that idea and we really love for you to make the survival horror game you want so here is a bunch of monies."

I guess what Im trying to say is I hope Evil Within/Psycho Break is the game that Shinji Mikami wants to make and not something he thinks he needs to make to please his benefactors.

Ultimately this is a Shinji Mikami game and I dont for a moment doubt the quality of the game. And if it does ape RE 4 then I guess that is something to look forward to too since Capcom for some reason never tried to milk RE4's success. Well....not without adding their poison into the formula till we now have the abomination know as RE6.

Why the fuck does that spinning blade room exist? Who would even build something like that? Giant meat-cleaver wielding monsters don't seem like they'd make very good machinists or electricians. Checkmate, Mikami.
