Here's Another 'Guided Tour' of Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII

My girlfriend, who was around while I was watching this, commented that the voice acting sounded like cheap porn, which made me think twice..

@manthing: Wow, alright then. Thanks for the insight! I think I'm willing to deal with goofiness in a story in favor of great, fun combat. That's probably going to be a buy for me.

@theh1ppo: For me man it was the highlight of the game. The combat for me was by far the best part. No more auto battle. It reminded me of a cross between XIII, crisis core and x-2. The story from what I was able to translate was cool but Im not going to lie. the game is goofy as fuck at times lol.

From the looks of it, if the characters in this game were replaced by characters created by people that weren't incompetent assholes, it could be a pretty decent game. I couldn't tolerate 75% of the things that came out of the mouths of characters in FFXIII, and this game looks to carry on that proud tradition.

I played through and enjoyed FF XIII, the first Final Fantasy game I could ever say I did and honestly the only JRPG I've ever finished (sorry Ni no Kuni, Lost Odyssey, Eternal Sonata, FFX, FFXII, Valkyria Chronicles, Jean d'Arc, Tales of Vesperia, FFIII on DS, Brave Story: New Traveler (yeck), Fire Emblem Awakening, FFXIII-2, The Last Remnant that I played for about 20 minutes, Resonance of Fate which I played for about 15 minutes, Persona 3, and I guess Persona 4 Golden cause playing it on Vita after watching the Endurance Run probably 4 times kinda takes the desire to continue away from me... I guess)... but I didn't think Lightning was a very cool or interesting character. The fact that her long-term motivation is kept kinda hidden for most of the game was bullshit.

Just imagin the ending of FFXIV where its just a pan of Midor from VII, with the top and bottom crushed with a bunch of crashed star wars ships from FFXII and somehow you get Vivi in there, because vivi was the best part of FFIX.

And he is the only thing i can remember. In fact, i got to that village, of the dolls, cried after he told me he had less then a year to live, and stopped playing right there, because the rest of the game was never going to live up to that moment.

So Square's definition of bad-ass female character is "Never use any inflection, ever". Yeah, that monotone is gonna get old fast.

Eh I don't hate Lightning.

The first FF13 really drags. I am tempted to jump to the second one.

I really like how crazy it has become. That was a key aspect of FF and they seem to be really embracing it now.

Do you really want that, though? Like, deep down, you'd know that they're just making it up after the fact, and that nothing in those older games was really meant to connect to any other games. There is no grand design. What would this multiverse twist actually do for anybody? I guess you could have crossover fights for fanboys to circle jerk over, but Dissidia already did that, more or less.

It's as pointless as a Zelda timeline. They're just gonna keep on making Zelda games, and each one will have a callback or two, just for the fuck of it. They don't really mean anything. There's always a Triforce, a Princess Zelda, etc. They ginned up a timeline, and slotted things in where they loosely made sense, then had to split the timeline because they couldn't resist making Wind Waker and Twilight Princess both sequels to Ocarina of Time somehow, and also they had to make a separate timeline for the NES/SNES games cuz why not.

I feel like FF is turning more and more emo with each iteration.

God. I hate this trend where the combat gets more and more dumbed down. Srsly? Getting rid of menu's in an FF game? The conversion from deep RPG combat to mindless action game button masher is complete. :(

Especially how he talks about the culture. It looks pretty bland but then I think that about every FF since FFIX.

This excites me not only because it looks kind of okay, but because it means Final Fantasy 13 will finally be over.

The voice actor who did Liara doesn't seem like a great voice for you main character. I mean, Liara is kind of supposed to be boring and unemotional so it fits there but this just doesn't feel right.

If I were in this trailer, I'd probably be miserable too.

Hey Square Enix. You don't advertise features that sound like they would have been on the back of a PS1 game. I'm pretty sure my copy of Crash Bandicoot 2 claims that you can run, jump, and slide too.

The thing is, I think parts of this game look really interesting, but I'd rather be shown than told that. Instead of giving me a bunch of bullet points of potentially interesting things for five and a half minutes, I would be far more entertained (and more likely to let go of my money) if you'd show a few longer gameplay clips. For instance, show me a bit of dungeon exploration with some battles without any voiceover. Show me the large open world by running around it a bit and running, sliding, and climbing around things, preferably with a quick check of the map to show me how big the area is and how quickly I can pull up the map and turn it off. Show me the variety of equipment you have and the ways I can customize them. Those things are what interest me about this game, and this trailer makes them boring.

Oh, and don't show me any of the dialogue. It's really bad. All of those lines sound like they were delivered by people who have the same expression that the Chocobo girl has.

The word out of Japan for this game so far is that it is pretty good. I wasn't really sold on this game from their marketing tactics, all I was seeing was a lot of fanservice costumes ("I guess we can just strap a bunch of moogle toys to her"). But reading impressions it sounds like the steaming open-world stuff works pretty well, the combat is fun and the time-limit is effective without being too daunting (you have 13 in-game days to finish the game but time pauses in a lot of cases and you can extend the time limit).

FF13 needs to just stop, just stop this nonsense

Yeah, okay, no. Let me know when FF stops being an extended J-Pop musical and gets back to actual Fantasy.

FFXV isn't looking so great either.

I can assure you the game is better than this super lame, 80s-style commercial gives it credit for.

Final game in the "13 trilogy"? Great... Maybe we can move on to a good set of FF games in the new generation. This one was a stinker.

Thought the trailer voice-over was bad until I heard the in-game voice acting. Everyone associated with this project should be fucking fired.

I really want to watch an LP to see what leads to this fucking ending actually happening because it makes no sense.

Atlus bought out all the decent translators and directors, it's the only way to explain the insane acting and dialog in the average JRPG.

I don't have anything to say about this game that isn't spiteful. What the hell is with this amateur-level voice-acting? Why does this game look far worse than FFXIII when they're clearly just reusing assets? Jesus christ, this series is heading in a poor direction.

I don't understand. There are so many ways to hear what a human being speaking English sounds like in 2013. Why does it appear no one involved with Final Fantasy has ever witnessed a real human being speak this language? Its disgusting how bad this is.

So what horrors await when I secretly get out of the 'guided tour' while Square-Enix isn't looking?
