Here's That Crazy Ass Metal Gear Solid V Trailer Everyone's Talking About

So which part of this do we want to try and wrap our heads around first? My vote goes to the flying fire whale.

Also, I still have to wonder who it is that Master Miller is referring to during the opening. Probably Chico? The Ground Zeroes prologue mission I believe is probably Big Boss rescuing Chico from that cell.

Only MGS game I've played was 4, and I really wasn't a fan of it. I'm actually kinda excited about this one, though.

Wait, Big Boss has a horn on his forehead?

This is Kojimaest trailer I've ever seen. Hell, it's like the Sgt. Pepper's of Kojima trailers.

He must turn into that flaming unicorn/pegasus that appeared beforehand.

@laxbro19: Ground Zeroes is the prologue to the "main" game, think Tanker Mission from MGS2 or Virtuous Mission from MGS3.

@laxbro19: Ground Zeroes and Phantom Pain are the same game, if you watched the live stream of Kojima's little showing it off thing earlier on Gamespot, Ground Zeroes is like Virtuous Mission, or the Tanker Mission...then it leads to Phantom Pain.

@yummylee: Well it's not too bad then, Robin a great voice actor. At the very least they got the good acting part covered.

@yummylee: Well, from the trailer, we saw two rather different looking Big Bosses. One had a bloody face, and some metal looking things on his eye-patch. The other one had a clean face and a solid black eye-patch, so I'd say the other guy was Big Boss number 2.

Honestly, I'm disappointed that the Phantom Pain is Metal Gear Solid 5 because that original trailer was bananas. Luckily, MGS5 apparently looks amazing.

@christoffer: I'd say it has more to do with that fact that one is a rather standard by the book trailer of an FPS and the other one is complete and utter insanity.

This game seems to take place while Big Boss is in a coma. Given the game's ridiculous set pieces, I think it's safe to say that much of the game will take place inside of Big Boss's head.

I don't like the voice at the end. At least not if it's supposed to be Snake. I get that David Hayter isn't coming back but they could have found someone who sounded closer and older. Big Boss is what, late 50s by that point, maybe even 60s.

Edit: It sound a lot like the guy who does the cockney voice in Saints Row The Third.

Yeah, that's Robin Atkin Downes. He's carrying on the role of Master Miller from Peace Walker. You do hear a bit of this new Snake during an additional gameplay trailer, though. That is of course is this'll truly be permanent. It could be a placeholder, or they could just be setting up the possibility of David voicing Solid Snake as he stars on screen alongside Big Boss.

Loading Video...

The coma is a perfect excuse to make the transition from David Hayter to Richard Doyle, which is the best way to handle this.

hm? I would chalk up the difference in appearance because it's set in different time periods. The 'clean face' Big Boss is no doubt from the Ground Zeroes prologue mission before he falls into a coma.

What a fantastic trailer! I am so excited for this game and so glad Kojima is still making MGS games.

This whole stuff with The Phantom Pain has also been a lot of fun. Reminds me how great all the craziness is in the MGS games.

Maybe it's because I've never played a Metal Gear game before but... that was one of the most confusing trailers I've ever watched.

I have no idea what was going on at any moment.

His performance was crap in Peace Walker, and I'm glad they finally made a switch.

I swear, it's actually kinda silly to see Miller still wearing his shades despite the current situation he's in. He's reaching Albert Wesker levels of 'never not be wearing shades'.

And yes, of all the stuff that happens in that trailer, it's the shades thing that actually stood out to me. That's kind of silly in itself, I know.

No! Quite the opposite. I said that because a change in voice actor can raise concerns that the quality might not be up to the same standards as in previous games.

Ground Zeroes is either an unnumbered PS3 game between 4 and 5. Or it's the first mission in MGS5. It was phrased oddly, so it's hard to tell which is the case.

@yummylee: I hypothesize that he'll be voiced by Richard Doyle, he's voiced the older Big Boss before, so it would make sense. I'd be surprised if Hayter was completely out, but who knows.

Now this seems like a Kojima game! Also, is David Hayter not doing the voice? or did big boss get a voice change operation? or maybe he just dreams he has a different voice while he's in the coma? like some sort of residual self image thing, or maybe it a result of the braindamage he suffered after being in a coma for nine years?

Anyway this seems to have the right brand of crazy so I'm in

That's what I assumed initially before all of this, but it certainly didn't sound like him during the gameplay trailer. Plus, that guy is old. He's at least in his 70s by now, so I wonder if he'd be the right fit for voicing an early 50s Big Boss. Guess it's possible... there's currently so much room for speculation overall, though, concerning Big Boss' voice actor and the why behind it all. It gets to be exhausting when you try to run down all of the possibilities.

This trailer already seems to be tripping balls, but there's another thing to take in mind. The Big Boss / MGS3 timeline ends in MG1 and 2. If they're time skipping 9 years here, and he was already getting old to begin with, we're fast approaching the plot arc where Solid Snake fights Big Boss. It's going to be really crazy if we play as Big Boss when the story catches up with the first games.

Looked almost normal. Then the flaming unicorn-pegasus and the flying fire whale showed up. Whole lotta WTF going on here. Then again, "making sense" was never a hallmark of the MGS games ;P

Big Boss SHOULD have quite frankly had a different voice actor from the very start. And even if he had to be voiced by one of the Snakes, John Cygan should have been the one to take the role considering Solidus is the closest to a perfect clone of Big Boss.

I think all of the fiery madness is implied to be related to the coma or something... some sort of violent after effect or PTSD ect. That, or they're illusions created by the little Psycho Mantis-esque character.

Timelines? Wait, am I missing something? I was always under the impression that MGS3 happened before MGS1, MGS2 happened after that and MGS4 after that. I mean, MGS3 was a prequel wasn't it? Not a spin-off in an alternate timeline?

Maybe I misread what you said though.

or maybe the hospital is actually on fire from the attack in the phantom pain thing and he incorporates this into his coma dream?
