Here's That Crazy Ass Metal Gear Solid V Trailer Everyone's Talking About

So which part of this do we want to try and wrap our heads around first? My vote goes to the flying fire whale.

I have no interest in a MGS game that breaks cannon with MGS1. My reasons are deeply personal, but MGS is now over for me. In other words, I'm retired.

@Quarters:: I'm definitely not suggesting the coma happened later. I'm suggesting that the coma happened earlier in the early 70's i.e. 1971 (the "copyright" date of the song from the first ground zeroes trailer) and he wakes up in the late 70's, specifically 1980. I'm proposing a one coma theory ( the L.E.T. Coma is the same as this 9 year Coma). It is impossible for the coma to take place later than 1973 because Big Boss was accounted for by Naomi in 1982. I don't think Peace Walker is cannon because it contradicts MGS1 and would hamper Kojima's creative flexibility in telling the story of Outer Heaven's creation. For the sake of future brevity I will refer to this as "The One Coma Theory" from here on out.

How does PW contradict MGS1? Genuinely curious, I never saw any problem with it. Also, Gametrailers posted a 17 minute interview with Kojima a bit ago, and he says that Ground Zeroes takes place "immediately after Peace Walker". Phantom Pain takes place nine years after that.

It contradicts MGS1 because if Big Boss just woke up from a 9 year coma in 1983, then how did he meet up with Naomi in 1982 as she clearly explained over the codec in between Ocelot's Torture sessions in the first Metal Gear Solid. Also, Liquid implies that they were cloned while Big Boss was in a long coma. They were both cloned in 1972 and Big Boss was still in a coma in 1974. Also, Big Boss would be well into his sixties by 1983 according to Liquid. There are numerous other inconsistencies as well. I'm very good with details and dates, and the original MGS with the happy ending is the core untouchable cannon of the series. Kojima will have to make minor changes to the dates in PW if he wants it to fit in with MGS1, and hence complete the circle.

PW is without a doubt canon, a lot of the dates from MGS1 however were already retconned by MGS3's credits sequence.

Also, I personally subscribe to the idea that Big Boss has been in more comas than he's had hot meals. While this is probably the coma in which the Enfants Terribles project happened all that means is Kojima is retconning the dates yet again (which isn't really a big deal.) Originally the story was that Big Boss went into that coma after fighting in vietnam and before starting MSF. Since Ground Zeroes seems to be a direct sequel to PW (story threads and characters were shown in that first trailer) we can probably assume that the coma in these games is either in 74-75. Your theory revolved entirely on considering PW non-canon, which would render Ground Zeroes non-canon too. Making the whole theory a little sillier than just admitting that Kojima has no issues with retconning previous games established fictions.

PW is 100% cannon. Ground Zeroes takes place right after PW in 1974 and acts as a prologue from Phantom Pain and will tell the story of Militaires San Frontieres demise. Phantom Pain takes place in 1983 when Big Boss wakes up from his coma. In PP he and Master Miller investigate the XOF organisation as a splinter group called Diamond Dogs.

Yup, expectations at play.

Don't litter this beautiful MGS related article/trailer with Battlefield 3.5 garbage. Thanks.

It says a lot about "bad evil russian overlords are pestering poor old americans again" and how everyone is tired of generic shooter #21 but are psyched about a new MGS. MGS is the superior game and too bad it stole BF4's shine, deal with it.

And this is what I'm talking about. Have you played BF4, no. Have you played this, no. So how is this not about expectations?

I did. It was called Battlefield 3. It means that people have high expectations of Metal Gear Solid. Battlefield? Meh.

Well there you go. I hope you learn the meaning of the "benefit of the doubt" someday.

Don't worry there will be a PC version in addition to a PS4 and next Xbox version. The Fox engine was designed to thrive on multiple platforms both current and Next Generation. The Fox 2.0 engine will be much more powerful, but will not run on current generation hardware; however, it will still have the same multiplatform philosophy.

@max_cherry: This game is a direct follow up to some of the events in Peace Walker, so no, that won't happen. In the Ground Zeroes trailer, they mention several things from that game, and this seems to be based off the true ending of PW. The Ground Zeroes portion takes place in 1974/1975, and the part after he wakes up will probably be around 1983.

But, that's impossible! Big Boss was in a coma in 1974.

Eh? Are you thinking that he was in a coma in '72 for LET? Because he was injured then and at least out of commission for a bit. But Peace Walker is clearly in '74, and he seems to get knocked into this 9 year coma shortly thereafter. I only say it could be '75 because I don't know how late in the year Peace Walker was.

I mean, it's possible it could be a little bit later than that, but I still don't think it will be that much further. Miller's presence(who looks the same), Chico's presence(who looks the same), the helicopter with "1974" on it, the mention of Paz, and everything else just seems to indicate a close time period.

For someone who has been in a coma for 9 years, he's in pretty damn good shape. Being laid up in bed for 6 months is usually more than enough time for the body to become severely weak due to muscular atrophy.

I've beaten all the Metal Gear games bar Peace Walker, which I've somehow managed to avoid entirely. All I know about that game is that it takes place in 1974 in Costa Rica or something. But, besides that minor caveat, I'm the Metal Gear expert, and I have some interesting theories. If I was tasked with writing MGS5, I would center it on the founding of Outer Heaven in the 70's and the chain of events leading up to Big Boss' decision to defect. That is the most interesting story thread that hasn't yet been thoroughly addressed in any Metal Gear game yet. MGS5 will put us in Big Boss' shoes during his most important transition. I predict ground zeroes will be the mission (which will take place before 1972) where Big Boss is exposed to the tip of the ice berg and is gravely wounded at the end. The Phantom Pain will pick up in Big Boss' subsequent coma where I believe about 3/5 of that game will take place, the game will end with Big Boss' creation of Outer Heaven in the 70's. This is exciting because it will clarify a lot of the first Metal Gear Solid by filling in this major narrative gap.

This trailer already seems to be tripping balls, but there's another thing to take in mind. The Big Boss / MGS3 timeline ends in MG1 and 2. If they're time skipping 9 years here, and he was already getting old to begin with, we're fast approaching the plot arc where Solid Snake fights Big Boss. It's going to be really crazy if we play as Big Boss when the story catches up with the first games.

@darklight said:

You're right, MGS 1 is after MGS3. But he's saying that If a lot of time has passed from MGS3 we might re-live the moment of Metal Gear 1-2 but as Big Boss (not MGS, but MG)

Yeah I was initially thinking after seeing these trailers that this was going to be a remake of MG and MG: SS and they were going to kind of retcon it a bit. I wouldn't have been surprised that if after MGS4 everything more or less being "wrapped up" that they wouldn't go back to the original games and we'd see stuff like snake fighting gray fox in a mine field bare-handed. Judging from the comments I'm reading here this kind of similar idea/sentiment is pretty common. I also initially thought that would fit with the "ground zero's" title, but of course with Kojima it wouldn't ever be that simple or anything.

I've been on board the Metal Gear train since the beginning, I should just buy a sleeper car at this point, I fucking love this train.

True Dat.

And lastly @thefantasticfillip: Excellent summation! It's also somewhat helpful that I just replayed MGS4 and finally decided to attempt (and obtained!) my BBE.

Insanity is easy.

And yet gets you so much more in terms of a response. What do you think that says about the BF4 trailer?

It tells you that MGS have a fan base more willing to believe everything Kojima puts out is awesome.

I'm gonna bet buckets to your donuts that a good chunk of the people impressed by the trailer are not MGS fans by any means.

And are you sure it doesn't actually in fact tell you that the BF4 trailer, regardless of the ultimate quality of the game itself, was a piece of garbage? Far worse reception from the audience, and doing it, according to you, the "hard way", is both ineffective and inefficient.

You're letting your desire to make arguments about two games that have not been released make the actual argument between their respective trailers to be rather incoherent.

I'll admit I'm interested but.. eh I dunno anymore. It seems to have that same problem as RE and Zelda where they have a great world and its fiction, but no real firm vision of where they want to go with it so you're left with a really interesting universe but an absolute clusterfuck of a story that's all over the place and just becomes more and more impenetrable and up its own ass as it goes along.

Also, don't forget that Big Boss was accounted for in 1982 by Naomi, and definitely not in a coma at that time. So, the big 9 year coma must have happened prior to 1973, further supporting the notion that this 9 year coma and the coma Big Boss was in during the Les Enfants Terribles Project in 1972 are one and the same.

I really doubt any part of this game will take place in the 80's given the weak state of the cold war then. However, according to Liquid, Big Boss was in a coma in 1972 and well into his 50's at that time. I don't see how Peace Walker can possibly fit in with what was laid out in the first MGS. Rather, I think this game will center on Big Boss' coma, Les Enfants Terribles, his ideological shift and creation of Outer Heaven. It will be the missing link in the MGS franchise.

Twin Peaks is craziness that I can get into, weird and crazy in a fun way. I did NOT like Inception though, I really didn't think it was as deep and involved as most people thought. I 'understood' the layers it was showing me, but I just didn't think it was entertaining. I will confess I don't like the gameplay of MG, maybe that colors it for me, but it seems like self serious drivel to me.

Am I the only one who thinks all this stuff is nonsense, and not in the dumb as hell fun way?

Then I guess you find stuff like Inception or Twin Peaks as nonsense as well? It's all surreal imagery and the only ones who think it's stupid are the ones that take it as literal and not metaphorical.

It's why I didn't like MGS4 compared to the past ones. The past MGS games never directly expounded upon the supernatural stuff that happened in them and that's what made the games so interesting. Then when MGS4 comes in to explain everything away with technology and nanomachines, the surreal stuff became literal. It's like explaining a magic trick, sometimes it's better not to know, no matter how much you want to.

Am I the only one who thinks all this stuff is nonsense, and not in the dumb as hell fun way?

@max_cherry: This game is a direct follow up to some of the events in Peace Walker, so no, that won't happen. In the Ground Zeroes trailer, they mention several things from that game, and this seems to be based off the true ending of PW. The Ground Zeroes portion takes place in 1974/1975, and the part after he wakes up will probably be around 1983.

Do we know how long it's been since PW at the start of this game? If you remember the GZ trailer he was using some tech that I wouldn't place in the mid-70s. Basically, I want this game to set up MG1 and finally take this series full circle and it would probably need to start later than 74 and 83.

They show Chico in the GZ trailer, and he looks the same age as he does in PW. Plus, I'm pretty sure in the trailer for MGSV, you can see "1974" on the side of the helicopter when he's shooting out of it. Sure, it would be awesome if it lead into MG1, but I think for right now the more recent stuff in the game will be not much later than 83.
