I'm excited about this game, but the graphics don't look better at all. And the first game came out in 2006.

While I'm nothing but stoked that this is coming out, I hope they release an HD texture pack somewhere down the road.

It's pretty obvious they're still using the same Essence engine as before, at least in terms of graphics.

That said, it looks like they're going for more historically accurate uniform/paint schemes this time, which is a big plus for me.

I hope they have some sort of survival mode, my favorite missions in the original where always the defensive ones.

I was hoping for a graphical update as well, not that the original looks bad but it won't feel like playing a sequel except with Russian units.

It looks significantly better in the Alpha when you're playing it. It doesn't hold up to close scrutiny like Total War but there is a great deal more fluidity in the animations and effects. Also things look real nice when you blow them in to itty bitty pieces.

I'm hoping people won't merely dismiss it because it feels like the first strategy game which is approachable (*glares at Men of War*) and has less of a focus on build orders and more about what you deploy. That and THQ are fucked if this doesn't sell.

@Giantstalker: Luck, managed to grab a key from beta.companyofheroes.com when they went up earlier in the week. They said they are giving more out. But you might be more lucky getting in to the beta in January.

Still need to play the original from the humble bundle. Only went through the tutorial and it seemed pretty cool.

This definitely looks like the same game, though I don't really have a problem with that if they're focusing on the stuff that matters. It's an RTS, it doesn't need overly detailed models.

The graphics look disappointingly similar to CoH, right down to the particle effects. Also, the Russian/German front isn't as interesting to me.

As a German, I think it's way more interesting than the western front. The scope, the weather, the extremes of two dictatorships. The "total war" in its starkest form. And a little underrepresented in video games.

I just like the American/German front better because of Saving Private Ryan and because of video games I have played. I also like the American Guns more than the Russian ones. M1 Garand and Thompson are awesome.

Yeah, the eastern front is basically totally forgotten in British (& presumably American) schools. We spend more time talking about the conflict in North Africa than the Eastern Front, despite the former being of much lower scale & much lower importance to the outcome of the war. When you actually read up about it it makes the things that happened on the Western Front seem pedestrian in comparison. I mean the insane scale of things like like the Battle of Kursk, or the Siege of Stalingrad & Paulus's surrender. The initial seemingly unstoppable German push into Russia at the start of Barbarossa all the way to the outskirts of Moscow, & the astounding encirclements & surrenders of hundreds of thousands along the way. And as you say, the devastating effect of the weather. The foolish strategy & tactics of the German High Command. And so on.

A brutal, brutal conflict often fought to the bitter end because of fear of the brutality of the enemy, for soldiers on both sides. And that fear was often justified.

If it didn't say Company of Heroes 2 at the end I could have sworn that all this footage was just a really really late expansion to the original.

Let's get this released for the fans and on with more Warhammer 40k goodies or maybe some Homeworld. Not to piss on Relic or their fans, but World War II is so played out in my book, I'd take anything over it. That said, a nice World War I RTS might be interesting and more WWI games in general.

The UI is awful and completely counter intuitive. I did more inventory management in that game than I did in Deus Ex! It hampers the gameplay when you're spending upwards of a minute having to load up troops with additional ammo.

@mnzy:

Yeah, total war however from what I can see at a glance it looked like small squads and a few tanks here and there. Totally pulling me out of immersion. Who knows, maybe Men of War will release a new game the next year that blows everything out of the water. Condemned Heroes and Vietnam felt a bit backwards. Assault squad was just repetitive and predictable (multiplayer wasn't too much fun either)

Not as much of a graphical leap over the original as I was expecting, guess they're probably still using DoW2's engine.

Lol did those rocket trucks blow up that tank to such a degree that it completely vanished from the battlefield? Not even smoldering remains, just straight up removal from existence.

@forkboy: I am from the UK and in my history classes we learned about boththe western and eastern fronts but not much about the africa campaign or the war in Japan other than "it happened". That said I am now 30.

At a glance I'd agree with that. It's like a PC game following console logic in that regard.

That's probably deliberate. I mean the first game looked AMAZING at the time and the explosions and effects still look great by today's standards. They probably want to hit a wider audience.

I'm sure it will look perfectly fine when you actually play the game.
Only insane people would play the game zoomed all the way in anyway and when you zoom back out it looks fine.

I went back to play it again recently because I thought the same way. It took me 2 minutes to see that the original looks super crummy now compared to what I remember back when it came out. This definitely looks much better.
