Another one of those?

Posted by ICantBeStopped

That's cool. Can we get a look at some new content instead? PAX was the previous weekend, so you guys don't have to put anything up for a week?

It's still early on the West Coast. There is gonna be some content later today for sure, when the crew will be in the office.

Yup. This game is still not for me.

Posted by Humanity

When all that action is happening they should have a side window in the video showing a finger rapidly hitting 1-5 on the keyboard.

Posted by pakattak

After being completely turned off by the open beta, I'd be interested in checking this out to see what they changed. I'm knee deep in Guild Wars 2 at the moment, though, so we'll see.

Posted by thirteenyahs

wait...limits are made to be broken?

Posted by Panelhopper

I think this might have to have more than 1 payment model to survive the way things are these days...I mean, I certainly don't have the money to gamble on an MMO that requires a monthly subscription

Posted by TheManiacsGnome

I devoted far to much of my life to FFXI, and even though I gave up on FFXIV on launch day...I'll try it again. For some reason.

Posted by RuneseekerMireille

Yep, I'll be trying this out, even though I'm pretty deep into Guild Wars 2 right now. Final Fantasy's aesthetic interests me much more than Guild Wars, or any other MMO for that matter. It's why I played FFXI for so long.

Posted by project343

Ready those magicks, guys.

Posted by bonbolapti

I didn't mind it the first time, but if it becomes a world of better, then I'll definitely want to try it out again.

But if I like it, I'll pick up the PS3 release.

Posted by Fawkes

I can't wait to see if they finally made a video game out of this.

Posted by skrutop

It looks pretty good; I hope that they recover from their messy launch.

Posted by Raye

I'm genuinely excited about this game. This is what I've wanted out of a modern Final Fantasy, at least in terms of atmosphere. Let's hope they really improved it!

Posted by Nickson

I can't wait for this game. Playing the current version off and on, there is definitely some merit already. I would just like to play a game where i can get lost in a world with such strong Art, design, and production value if anything else.

Posted by Vaancor

Gotta admit, awfully pretty! Nice to see they're using a combo system, which is one of the few mechanics in FFXI I wished carried over to other MMOs more.

Posted by MeatSim

I am off the MMO train right now so still staying away from this.

That's the down side to having a website that's literally 6 dudes, all of whom are traveling.

seeing this makes me wish GW2 had polearms/pikes/halberds/spears.

Posted by Vandersveldt

FF XI was famous for having super hard difficulty, which is pretty rare nowadays and what I am looking for in an MMO. Does anyone know if FFXIV will be the same?

Posted by pakattak

@TheHT: Truth. The fact that they actually DO have spears, but only underwater, makes it even worse.

Posted by doe3879

@pakattak: ya, my warrior in guild war 2 is Lagging 2hander option. Sword and Hammer, that's it

Posted by doe3879

is anyone asking for this?

I rather see a 8/16 bit final fantasy MMO,

Edited by RobinOttens

That logo says 'A Realm Reborn: Final Fantasy XIV'. Is that their new naming scheme then? Subtitle first, colon, then the brand name and number. The new FFXIII game is the same. Or I could totally be mistaken here.

I enjoyed the open beta and my month of free playtime back when this first released, never had the time or money to play it beyond those 30 days. This trailer is not great at showing how the game has changed since then. But I might dig out my old copy at some point, for a month or two of this.

Posted by cmblasko

Sure looks pretty, though I would have to watch some actual game play footage before deciding if I am interested in trying it. The part where they are riding Chocobos across the stream reminded me of the Final Fantasy Tactics intro.

Wonder how much money has been sunk into this project so far, and how much the total tab will be when all is said and done? FF11 must have generated a ton of money for them to think this is worth it.

I've stil been surprised that they don't have any articles put up about the event. I'd expect them to be putting stuff up each night, but I can't blame them for partying it up instead!

Posted by halcyonTwilight

@Vandersveldt: Yes, even FFXIV before the "Realm Reborn" remake was fairly difficult by MMO standards. But I wouldn't say that the some of the difficulty was intentional though, since some of the difficulty had to do with the poor net code.

Posted by Amaru25

I really hate how DQ and FF have become so intertwined with MMOs. MMOs are not fun to me.

A retro styled multiplayer Final Fantasy could be fun.

As for your question, I am asking for something like this (a modern style Final Fantasy MMO) if it is done well and does not ask me to pay a monthly fee to play it (Guild Wars model seems a good fit) FFXIV sadly does not meet those requirements...

Posted by dru187

Not interested....Sadly.

Posted by SortedeVaras

Square has been making boring crap with the FF license since after X, when are they going to make a real FF again?

Posted by Nickson

@Vandersveldt: Most guys who come directly from and only FFXI have been rather bad FFXIV players from my experience. FFXI was usually a many vs solo mob experience where positioning didn't matter too much.

When i play ffxiv, sometimes i pitch in and help some newer players out. A lot of people just can't wrap their heads around positioning their characters in safe spots and watching the monster's animations to avoid super dmg aoe's. FFXIV isn't about being 'hardcore', its about keeping you on your toes and forcing you to make decisions.

Posted by divakchopra

this is how FF should be... not the futuristic linear crap they have out right now

Posted by tphickma

These are always tough to gauge until you play them

FFXI is indeed the most profitable game ever in the series.

Posted by Yorec

Well it certainly looks pretty, I can't deny that. As for the combat I can't really judge since I've never played the original version of XIV. Still, I'd try it if I had a decent enough computer to run it.

there have been some great visual-themed FF games in the past, with scifi, steam-punk etc elements and styles. why did they make another generic fantasy mmo? its a pretty one to be fair but still...

well i tend to agree, but you have to keep in mind that the team doing this FF is not the team behind most other iconic final fantasies. Akihiko Yoshida who I believe is still the director for this game, is responsible for Final Fantasy tactics, tactics ogre, Vargant story, and FF12 among others, and he is well known for prefering a more traditional fantasy style, which is still rather distinctive within Jrpgs.

I think it's rather likely that the game will actually mix and match in different degrees other stylistic elements that you mentioned thoughout the whole experience too, although to that purpose this particular trailer might not be the best example.

Posted by jebro

@Max015: There's several classes that completely rely on exact positioning and many mobs had AOE and cone damage that required people to be in correct alignment and distance.

Not sure which era you played in, but I could definitely see current FFXI players being awful because it's completely broken and lame now where alliances just zerg mobs.

Posted by PandaShake

I'll give it another try. The systems in place in the beta was the absolute worst. Pretty game though, I always love FF's style of spell effects.

Edited by tourgen

man this just reminds me of how badly RPGs translate into MMOs, and how bad the Elder Scrolls MMO is probably going to be. So much wasted time and energy.

I wish Square would make a new, single-player Final Fantasy using this world, these character types and this style. I imagine that the original Final Fantasies would look like this if they were done today, with these tech specs; a much, much prettier version of knights and wizards and whatnot. Not that crazy, lazy, tween, anime-tinged garbage you see in current FF games. I mean, I don't know about you guys, but I'm tired of Square trotting out the same archetypes for every entry; how many times do we need to adventure with a "bubbly cheerleader" character? Wasn't Yuffie, Selphie, Rikku, or Vanille enough?

The online Final Fantasies have such great universes, but I hate MMO's. That being said, I know they've done a TON of work to change FFXIV into something good. I hope "Realm Reborn" is successful. I just wish they made a single player FF that looked like this.

Edited by Junpei

While I would love to see this game succeed if not solely for the sake of Square's financial stability, I can't do it. Maybe it's just the super blurred textures and shading effects (I hope that is only on this trailer and not the whole game) but it is just giving me a headache and making it hard to focus on. I'll stick to GW2 thanks.

Also, they should just rename Versus 13 to 15. Only way to salvage that at this point.

Posted by AiurFlux

Meh. The damage has already been done as far as I'm concerned. And if it still has the pay per month business model it won't work in today's day. In a couple of years the market has had such a dramatic shift, and as is typical Japanese developers tend to be stuck in their ways and not really evolve. But when they do they pick the most abundant, and hated, things in games like QTE's then shoehorn them in.

Plus as far as I'm concerned this massive piece of shit trainwreck, or at least the first version, is responsible for Square having to delay 13 Versus for so long. They lost a LOT of money on this and it still isn't going to work. People move on, and when your initial reviews are shit they run for the hills.

You know it's a bad game when they have to relaunch it lol.

From what I understand, PAX is pretty much just a party for game journalists. There aren't really any new games on display since those have been covered at E3. There aren't many breaking bits of news aside from this year, with the Ground Zeroes gameplay and Final Fantasy XIV: Oh God We Are So Sorry Let Us Fix This Game For You. So there really isn't much to write about, and it looks like what they do have is in video form.

PAX ended two days ago you entitled douchebag. Maybe give them a chance to actually get back to the office.

Posted by Vandersveldt

Well, I'll give it a try then, because this trailer is amazing. I want so badly an MMO to have fun with, and WoW used to do it. It just got soooo easssyyy to do anything at all, that it becomes a lose lose situation. You have the option of winning, and knowing you didn't do anything, or even worse, losing and knowing you never should have lost.
