"Set in a breathtaking CASTLE REALM" almost seems like admitting that their tech may be pretty awesome, but it still has it's limitations. 
 
It's a castle.
 
Don't get me wrong, this looks absolutely amazing, I just didn't like that one line in the trailer.

I only got around to downloading the Epic Citadel tech demo a couple weeks ago, and i've gotta say, seeing that in person was really jarring. As far as I'm concerned, this game cements the iOS platforms as a legitimate competitor to the 3DS, PSP, and PSP2.
An actual, great looking 3D game on a handheld that can easily stand up against whatever SCE and NTD will be able to pump out? Okay, great.
(At some point in the near future) A pretty darn good game engine that can be used by companies and indie devs to produce content of that quality without a huge upfront cost for building the tech? Holy SHIT.

@hedfone: It's half a new game from Epic, it's half a full product that Epic is using to prepare Unreal for the iOS platform. Shipping a full game will catch far more stuff than "Yay! It runs!". As well, it also serves as a demonstration for people who want to look into using Unreal for iOS as well. I would be far more interested in the middleware that has shipped a (as IB is likely to be) high-quality, high-selling title than the middle that shipped a tech demo with almost nothing going on.

Looks impressive but I don't see myself playing this on my iPhone, I prefer games on the level of Game Dev Story for my iPhone gaming needs.

Because you could whip this out waiting in line for a movie or in between classes...without bringing some chunky device just to play games. You could be texting your friends and then turn the game on. It's called the future as people get closer and closer to that portable handheld tricorder that does everything you need day to day.
 
No one's saying hey let me turn the 360 off for this iphone game.

So I've loaded up the Epic Demo and I have to say it rocks.  It is a SCARY nice 3D engine.  That said, as many here have said, why make it a bloody ACTION GAME?!?!  Seriously this engine is wonderful, but use it to the strengths of the platform not the blood weaknesses!  
 
Adventure games would rock with this engine.  Standard TURN BASED RPG's would rule.  Anything that doesn't require a twitch based reaction system would rule!

I'm not denying the convenience, it's just that I don't think big complicated games like this are suited to the iPhone. I think it's much better at simpler, games that are easily digestible in small chunks. Especially if you're mostly going to play it for short amounts of time, like as you say, while waiting in line for a movie or something. I downloaded Epic Citadel, the tech demo for this game, and it sure is pretty, but even just moving around felt clunky to me. I wouldn't want to play a game like that. 
 
Just my opinion though. By no means am I saying everyone who wants to play games like this on their phone is wrong, I just personally don't see the appeal.

@Hexogen: I don't get where you're getting that this is going to be some super complicated game.  Small chunks? Like individual fights that are about a minute long chunks? They aren't porting Elder Scrolls, you're just moving your guy from place to place to fight something.
 
Your take on this thing is a bit skewed dude. Bringing up Citadel proves that, all citadel did was draw up some graphics and have you walk around. It's a tech demo, the only thing you could take from that is how it looked. Games play differently from tech demos, actually tech demos don't play at all..they just show you lights and textures the engine can do...

@Ventilaator: Of course it's going to have limitations, it is for an iphone/ipad after all.  Unless you'd like to use 6 Gb of storage to cruise outside of the castle..

This game looks pretty good but honestly why isn't a game like this on consoles. I'm not saying this won't be a good game but still. Shoot with a longer dev cycle this would make for an awesome XBLA title! Who knows it very well might end up there? 
  
I agree that this is not the type of game that needs to be an app on the iPhone because RPGs are normally longer games by nature unless this is 1 to 2 at most? Most iPhone gamers want a gaming quick fix while waiting to do something i.e. Angry Birds. I for one prefer tactile controls over a touch screen anyday but i'll have to actually play it to see if it works.

go an artistic route if you can find the artist.

Anyway, it's a lot more convenient than carrying around a DS or PSP, and... honestly, I can't take those things out in public. Way too nerdy. With the iPhone, it's more acceptable to idly play on the subway, because fuck it, it's just part of your phone.

Agreed. Some of the best looking games I've ever played have relied more upon a unique art direction that the number of polys they're pushing.  
 
Also, they seemed to only show off the combat here - if it's a fantasy combat RPG, I really hope there's some metroidvania style exploration otherwise it's not going to hold my attention for too long (although, it is made by Chair, them what did Shadow Complex, so you'd expect that to be a given...)

Modern electronic devices can last for hours. Portable gaming has actually been around for a while now. At worst the DSi has a life of 9 hours while the iPhone 4 is 6 hours, and that's only assuming you're going out of your way to make the battery not last. Mobile games are usually inherently shorter and with the nature of the devices they're typically charged well within the time the battery is up. Phones have the battery advantage of having much more easily available methods of charging as opposed to dedicated portable gaming devices which are mainly ac adapters.

I hope it playes okay on the 3GS. Epic Citadel worked fine in spots but others it really got slow. And that was without AI and other stuff.
