I hope that this time around they do it Dark Souls style, so that you can go anywhere you can see. If all those gorgeous streets and buildings are just scenery, it would be an even bigger disappointment than Dark Souls 2.

Still don't get the hype here. I'm tired of the Souls games honestly and this is just more of that, with a fresh coat of paint. I'd like to see them try something different.

@eatallgames: totally. and every time dark souls 2 anything comes up (and on bombin in the am, it has come up a lot in 2014), he just has to state that he thought it was a disappointing game.... it's like, brah, it's okay, we get it. just a conversational tick, i suppose.

i know it's hard putting your opinion out there all the time on audio/video. it's just kinda funny

Have they said yet if it's multiplayer? I love Dark and Demons Souls but boy I would really like a focused single player game in this style.

Bloodborne still remains my only reason for wanting a PS4 and it's convincing me more every time they show more of it. I like how they've balanced the idea of large mobs of enemies attacking you with the "get health back by attacking" mechanic. It's a really smart mechanic. The style, the Souls-ness, the everything. It's for sure my most anticipated next gen game besides maybe MGSV and Silent Hills.

This looks a lot faster and more atmospheric than Dark Souls 2, so I'm pretty excited. On its face, fantasy London is a more boring setting than fantasy medieval times for me, but it just makes it more Castlevania than ever, and the Souls games always looked their best when they mixed brick and mortar with some environmental thing like snow or vines. The castlevania likeness makes me question if they'll have some sort of vampires in this game, no one could stop them from making their own Dracula or even Death(Nito, I suppose).

They might have been making too many things that are in their comfort zone, though. The huge elk man has Manus' arm. There are a lot of dudes that look like the pyromancy mummies from the Bastille. The werewolves move like the dogmen from the Tomb of Giants. That fat knight holds his blade horizontally and smashes it to the ground like a butcher would. It's very apparent it's still the same team.

I wonder how the all-in-one weapon works.

@seeric said:

So, judging from some of the voice overs of enemies, it seems like people who die in that town somehow turn into 'beasts' (ex: the one at around the 2:25 mark says 'I don't want to be a beast') and your character may be at least partially a 'beast' already assuming the townsfolk aren't completely insane since around the 2 minute mark they seem to be calling the playable character a 'beast' (it's a bit hard to make out though).

Other things of note from this trailer (not sure if they've already been mentioned in interviews somewhere):

Places requiring a torch seem like they'll be more common this time around since even a random sideroom was practically pitch black; this makes sense since the offhand can simply be a dedicated 'torch hand' if there's really no offhand gear and switching between wielding a weapon in one or both hands is pretty fast.

It looks like there's probably a single type of healing item in the game, 'Blood Vials'. It's possible that there might be some sort of rarer consumable, but these are what's represented by that big number in the upper-left with the orange background (the number jumps from 6 to 9 when he picks up a set of 3 of them). They also seem to have a nearly instantaneous usage time, probably both to keep with the faster nature of the game and to make up for being consumable items (though it wouldn't surprise me if there was a way to get back a bare minimum of them at certain points if you fall below said minimum).

There's a grace period during which to regain your health via attacks after being hit. Instead of simply vanishing upon taking damage, part of the lifebar instead turns into a small red line; when the player attacks, the health bar refills up to the end of this line. The grace period for recovering health this way seems to be about 6 seconds (the player gets hit at 2:23 and refills most of the damage via attacks, but a final sliver of potentially recoverable health vanishes at 2:29). Given the name of the game, I wonder if non-bleeding enemies (ex: animated statues) will not be possible to regenerate off of.

There is a huge insect-like creature surrounding a building in the background at 5:04. It might be a spider, but the head doesn't really look like one. They seem to try pretty hard to avoid showing it during the Cleric Beast fight (lots of cuts whenever the camera is turning in that direction) so I wonder if they didn't mean to reveal it.

At least the base Hunter Bullets seem to deal fairly bad damage, but they seem to make just about any enemy flinch with a single hit, which is sure to come in handy.

Thank you for that summary. I missed most of this. The best thing about the change in setting might be the new lore. It'll be all humans dying and turning bad again, but it's way better than the "cycle" and "the DLC boss split into many small pieces" thing Dark Souls 2 came up with.

As a lover of Souls both Dark and Demon, I'll be getting this but I don't like the part where there's no character creation. I'm assuming they're forgoing it for a driving character storyline of some sort.

As someone who has had no interest in Dark Souls or Dark Souls II, this looks surprisingly intriguing. I think it's that the new setting looks cooler and the combat seems more fun. I think I'm in.

As someone who finished a round of Demon Souls and 1 hour of Dark Souls, I'm surprised the period change isn't interesting me and more than playing through DS1 did.

Seriously? All this hype and build up, and THIS is what this game ends up looking/ playing like? Don't really understand how people can crap all over games like Call of Duty and Assassins Creed for dumping the same old shit on gamers year after year, yet somehow this "Dark Souls 2.5" is just a-ok

Bummer, I played Dark Souls as a knight simulator as much as possible (heaviest armor, weapons, etc). This looks like it forces the dumb ninja dodging and ultra aggressive style which just seems lame to me. I get that it's fun for other people but I would play a better action game if I wanted that style.

That's easy, this isn't a yearly franchise like those are. Only two of the games exist in the same universe. The first one was a PS3 exclusive, so less people played it. The Souls games don't even have portable spinoffs. It's not exactly the same situation.

Valid points, and i didnt mean to draw a direct comparison between this and those series. But im affraid that if FromSoftware had the staff/ budget of Ubi or Activision, we would be in the exact same boat. The Souls series may not be yearly YET, but 4 games in six years is getting pretty close imo. I played Demons Souls and loved every minute of it. Tried Dark Souls for about a month and totally lost interest. Borrowed DS 2 and gave it back after one night. The difficulties are harsh, but always fair, thats not my problem with these games. To me, they just arent much fun. Slow and clunky, and say what you will about different universes and what not, to me each one of these just seems like a reskin of the one before it with slightly smoother animations and better visuals.

People REALLY seem to love these games and thats great. Its awesome that these thing exist. Just saying, after the "Project Best" hype, and all the "what can From acheive with the next generation of console hardware?" talks, I was just hoping for so much more than what appears, in my own opinion only I understand, to be "Dark Souls, but in a sweet trenchcoat instead of armour!"

Yeah, I can understand if you're a bit disappointed by that kind of hype, because I agree that they really haven't changed much. I also totally get if you don't think they're fun. I don't believe they are Gears of War kind of slow or anything(unless you go for heavy armor), but they definitely are slowly paced and similar in both systems and set pieces. Was pretty surprised when Dark Souls 2 didn't have a dragon setting fire to a bridge, but then the DLC had one. I love the games I've played and the adjustments they have done for this game seem positive so far, but If Bloodborne is really coming out next year(I wasn't aware and looked it up) then that might be a bit too soon for me as well.

Watching this video left me less excited for the game. I don't know what it is, but I think going shield-less makes the combat look a lot less satisfying. By going more accessible, they seem to be going more action oriented. The trajectory seems to be similar to Resident Evil .

This looks amazing! The art direction, atmosphere and everything about this video really feels dignified. In a way, it reminds me more of Dark Souls and Demon's Souls.

Although I did love Dark Souls II, I felt it lost some of that dignified and silent despair the previous titles oozed.

@cornfed40: Slow and clunky? Not fun? I just can't agree with that. Dark Souls is some of the most fun I've had in any game ever. The controls are tight, and if you fail, it was your own fault. Don't even compare it to Call of Duty or Assassin's Creed. Just because the control system is similar doesn't mean the game will be. There's a lot they can do with the Souls formula to tweak it.

Without context, I would think this is some sort of wonderful Warhammer game starring a Witch Hunter. With context, it looks like more of the same which is kind of lame -- maybe I just need more time away from the DS series. By the time this launches, who knows.

I love how versatile the new sytheblade-type-thing looks. And dodging seems to have gotten a welcome boost in speed. I'm also getting an RE4 vibe from the villagers, especially when they all start flocking towards strange noises in a trance.

Yeah, it reminded me of RE4 too.

Lol at all the people complaining that taking the shield away will make this an easier, more "hack n slash" game. DS combat was most effective using rolling and planned, single attacks, which seems to be what was happening in this video. Having a shield let you lame things out and cheese through most battles. Taking it away will encourage a more "offense is the best defense" approach, which was always the best way to play melee in previous Souls games.

You couldn't be more wrong about the shields. Shields in the DS series wasn't a guaranteed "cheese things out" method, as there were tons of things to take into account, like stability, stamina, damage blocked, magic blocked, parrying, kicking, etc. Shields are just as viable a strategy as rolling and dodging.

Upgrading your greatshield pretty much let's you just stand there and casually take any hits that a boss may dish out at you. My +5 Greatshield of Artorias could take even the most intense barrage of attacks that Manus could dish out and I still had enough stamina to dish out a hit or two. Rolling on the other hand requires you to be constantly vigilant and time your dodges correctly. It makes fights much more intense, whereas using a shield is the most monotonous affair ever.
