Don't get me wrong, monthly's are great and a fantastic option for eg. students who may not be able to afford the whole year in one hit. From a purely mathematical side, they are not great for planning and booking things like a Pub for E3 12 months in advance (deposit or full payment required), large purchases, and they add a lot of risk to loans and contracts (higher interest, higher deposits demanded etc). If all their subs were monthly, it would only take a couple bad financial things to occur for them to possibly lose everything - like a further economic crash, large scale war or a massive change in copyright laws on the internet.

So you can see in the larger picture why the shirts are being used to promote the yearly option, as that bulk payment now is worth more than 'potential' monthly income for a year. The shirts are available for everyone from the store anyway, so its not exclusive, its just a clever way to keep the company afloat.

Sorry for the long post, I've seen a few people saying similar to you and thought a real reason might be better than a rude response. ;P

I interpreted the hot-air balloon at the end to indicate something to the effect of "...And then Dave, Ryan, Jeff, and Vinny all got high after the show. The end."

That guy's "coupons" idea bothers me. Once Giantbomb starts giving coupons for games, they've edged a little bit from covering games, to selling games. I'd not be comfortable with that.

As an aside, us monthly members should be the ones to get shirts, and have gold icons, cause we give more per year! :P

(That's actually why I chose that instead of annual, myself.)

Oh yea, setting up a new dev environment is always annoying. The easy stuff like your terminal and text editor config files you can usually drag and drop if you have them backed up somewhere, but there's always things you forget, and a bunch of software you need.

I was a little concerned at first about my subscription. The idea behind it was to support this awesome indie site, not to give money to CBS. But, Dave answered my question honestly, and with good reasoning. Our subs give them the power to continue to do their own thing.

I hope he doesn't mind me quoting a little bit of him here, 'cause it made me feel a lot better, and maybe will for one of the people who reads this: "The more subscriptions Giant Bomb has, the less influence anyone has on its editors. It's that simple. Outside of the features you receive, you're essentially supporting Jeff to be Jeff, because he has an army of paying customers behind him that can't be upset. I can't convince you that this is a good thing, you'll just have to watch the site and make your own decisions. I'm going to continue building the best, most honest websites I can. I did that before at CNET, I did it on my own, then at Whiskey and will do it in the future at CBS. I've been doing this almost my entire life, there's no other way I know how to build."

Also thanks Dave for the tip on SublimeText2. I've mostly used Notepad++ on Windows and plain old gedit on Linux and I've been looking for something similar on Mac. I'm now using SublimeText2 on everything and loving it.
