Homefront: The Revolution Brings Crytek's Touch to an American Uprising

It remains curious Crytek decided to hold onto the Homefront name, but The Revolution sure looks pretty.

The drabness of the world makes it instantly less appealing to me, but cool open-world stuff and perhaps some politics could make this pretty cool

"Okay, guys, so the last Homefront was sort of a vapid, run-of-the-mill FPS experience that hamfistedly treated its somewhat-interesting subject matter. What can we do to improve for the sequel?" asked the design lead.

"Near-future tech!" said one developer.

"We can make it an open world game. No one makes those anymore. But we need to make sure that people are still shooting each other all the time," chimed another.

"And we can make it look really good. Lots of grey polygons and stuff," still another dev frothed.

"Brilliant!" exclaimed the lead. "This game is going to be a revol... call the guys in marketing. I've got an idea for a title."

Despite the pessimism I quite enjoyed Homefront, it had a pretty great story (despite it's length) and it looked and played pretty good, I just hope this one keeps the same sort of feel as the first.

Looks very pretty.

I really wish it wasn't North Korea you were fighting in it, though. Kinda makes it completely implausible.

If they mix guerrilla warfare well with their open world it could be cool. Don't know why people are always so down on games.

Not really sure how I feel about the Wolfenstein-Koreans, but I could totally be down for a guerrilla warfare game done right.

Didn't Crytek get the name for pretty cheap when THQ went under. It's not brightest bulb, but if you already spent some time developing the game under that franchise, why not keep a brand that sold over two million copies. Even if the response was tepid, people already know about it, so easier than introducing something new in a crowded market of FPS'.

Game looks pretty, but the guard's speaking english bummed me out.

@sackmanjones: Probably because it's better to set your expectations low and be impressed rather then being hyped and underwhelmed. I do agree with you though, there's way too much negativity in the comment section of trailers and such.

... Yeah, okay. Crytek is pretty good, for the most part, so this might not be as garbagey as the first game. Could be a pleasant surprise.

@jonny_anonymous: That comes about through a ludicrous chain of events that allows North Korea to annex all of those nations without any sort of realistic opposition. The entire premise of Homefront is absurd.

Strange they are using the homefront name as I would of thought it would be more of a deterrent than a help, but i'm not in marketing so who knows.

I'm interested to see it, as it's probably essentially the new crysis minus the dumb suit stuff.

Remember the Crytek CEO said something along the lines of Graphics are 60% of a game. So don't hope for a great story, or anything other than vaguely future shooter. For as good as their engine is I wish they would do something creative with it. Who knows maybe they'll change and make something compelling.

As for all the "negative" comments, people like me are tired of shooting people for no good reason. I've been playing games my whole life and I'm over shooting dudes in the face. It could be that I'm older and matured out of it but I tend to think its because none of these games innovate. Its just insert white male, shoot enemy, save something from something.

...which makes even LESS sense considering how little political sway North Korea has over the overall region.

Considering the current geopolitcal climate, it's way more plausible that if/when Korea becomes unified, it'll be at the cost of the current North Korean regime and a combination of South Korea/China/The United States would be setting the terms and calling the shots.

Well that's the thing, it isn't current political climate.

Homefront is set in an alternate reality setting in the 2010s, where there are high tensions between North Korea and the global powers due to the country's military aggression, including its successful nuclear weapons test and the sinking of a South Korean ship.[5]

In the year 2013, two years after the death of North Korean supreme leaderKim Jong-il, his son and successor, Kim Jong-un, reunites North and South Korea to form the Greater Korean Republic (GKR), a technological and economic global power that utilizes the military strength of the North and the economic strength of the South. By the year 2015, a war between Iran and Saudi Arabia, both becoming nuclear-armed states, devastated the global oil supply, causing gas prices to skyrocket to $19.99 per gallon,[5] leaving many countries in debt and causing mass hysteria. This precipitates extreme economic turmoil and massive social unrest in the United States. Subsequently, in 2017, the U.S. military recalls much of its overseas presence, particularly in the Pacific. A year later, Japan, significantly weakened due to the diminishing of the U.S.-Japan Security Treaty, is easily conquered by the GKR and joins the Greater Korean Republic as a satellite country.[5]

In 2022, conditions in the United States get worse, with the collapse of the financial system and an Asian bird flu epidemic that claims six million lives, forcing the Mexican government to quarantine the country by setting up immigration quotas as the Asian bird flu continues throughout North America. By 2024, Korea's annexation has continued throughout Southeast Asia, including its emerging economic powers, giving the GKR an empire reminiscent of Imperial Japan.[5] Finally, in 2025, the Greater Korean Republic launched a supposed advanced GPS satellite that would be a signal of peace, but is actually an orbital weapon that detonated a high-altitude nuclear device over the U.S., creating an EMP burst that wipes out much of the nation's electrical infrastructure. In the ensuing chaos, the Korean People's Army (KPA) launches an instantamphibious invasion that seizes control of Hawaii and much of the U.S. Pacific Coast. Korean paratroopers are deployed over the Midwestern United States, and with the military severely crippled and scattered, launches a final offensive to take control of the remaining states. However, the Americans were able to counterattack, leaving the Eastern States free, and effectively dividing the nation at the irradiated Mississippi River, with the Western states under GKR occupation.[5]

I was somewhat interested in Homefront until I saw some of the promo stuff, particularly the part where they went out of their way to explain the story and the writer's argument was "This is actually a really plausible scenario if you're willing to make the following gigantic, wholly unrealistic leaps of logic!"

It might be fun if they get the open world sandbox part down. The original Crysis was great in that regard even though it wasn't really a true "open world."

I am 99% sure that footage is in engine. If you've ever played the PC version of Crysis 3 you'll recall that the engine renders explosions and particles in a very distinct way, a way that is pretty much identical to what was shown here. In addition, maxed out on PC, Crysis 3 easily looked as good as this trailer. If Crytek couldn't produce this quality of graphics in the actual gameplay it would actually be a step back from Crysis 3. Just because most games lower their quality to hit performance requirements on consoles doesn't mean all games do. Crysis 3 looks better than any current gen shooter out there right now when maxed out on a PC. And this footage doesn't look much (if any) better than Infamous 2 so I don't know why you would doubt it.

Also, Watch Dogs looks pretty much identical maxed out on PC to the E3 2012 reveal. Digital Foundry did an in depth examination of the scene and determined that while the console versions didn't look as good as the reveal, the PC version (which was the version shown at the reveal) looked the same.

The multiplayer was a lot of fun in the first game. It had an interesting battle point system as appose to a kill streak one. The problem though is that the game was riddled with bugs such as every ones level being reset to 1 for example... If they can make the multiplayer just as fun in this one minus the bugs... ... This could get me to go next gen, or this gen, or whatever... Here's to hoping...

That's the part that's so implausible. Everything falls apart because this would never happen. Not even in a 'near future' situation.

Not to mention South Korea doesn't need North Korea's military. They're one of the tops in the world at the moment.

@kaos_cracker: I actually did too. Also the gameplay actually sounds fairly interesting and kinda like Crysis in that you can approach things a bunch of different ways. No clue how it will turn out and sure Homefront is not something that inspires fond memories for me. But I'm still genuinely curious
