Homefront: The Revolution Brings Crytek's Touch to an American Uprising

It remains curious Crytek decided to hold onto the Homefront name, but The Revolution sure looks pretty.

I always find it hilarious when games come up with scenarios so the US can be the underdog in their story.

Homefront is a solid name, and all that advertising THQ did for the first game now serves EA. Didn't the first game sell like bananas, too? There is no shortage of reasons to keep the name.

It's always the nazis, the russians or the north koreans. For once, I would like to see a game where the americans are the invaders and the opressors. Kinda like what V for vendetta did with the british. A distorted interpretation of the democracy ideals that transformed the american government into a dictatorship regime. Now that would be interesting.

Great idea.

I'm positive the news media and other voices that play for the team of "Damn All Video Games to Hell" would absolutely not have a field day with that.

But I do actually agree with you, however. It would be extremely interesting to see. But come on. That game would get shit on all over the place.

@noodleunit: Yeah, but the marketing was all over the place and it did not do the game any real service. The game reviewed poorly and most people only remember Homefront as that bad unfinished game that got marketed to hell. In my opinion, keeping the name makes no marketing sense considering how poorly the first game was received. I imagined them trying to distance themselves from that name, keep the concept but call it something else. After all it is a unique concept, North Korean invasion of America hasn't been done in games (or in any other media?) at least to my limited knowledge.

Looks lame, USAss-kissing and generic as fuck. That's Crytek's schtick it seems. I know they are German but they desperately try to pander to the American market in the lamest ways imaginable since about Crysis 2.

This looks great. Credz to Crytek for making me exited about a Homefront game.

I actually enjoyed the first Homefront for its story so I am interested in this. It's still a great concept.

So i never played homefront, for what its worth, and i have no real proof of this, but after playing through wolfenstein the new order (which i really enjoyed), i feel like the idea of a subjugated america fighting back against their oppressors, whether they be German, Korean, Russian or what have you, is everywhere as the hot new thing, and to me it feels like an incredibly tired and boring idea at this point.

I'll give it the benefit of the doubt but i'm not expecting much right now.

@triumvir: I understand what you're getting at, but I really don't understand why "open-world" has become a criticism.

@freakache: It's really just a joke. I'm not really sure that "open-world" is a criticism in and of itself, but, well, maybe it is, if a minor one. Open-world games have become rather rote lately. The market is saturated, and, frankly, I'm sick of many of the tropes and mechanics which are seemingly essential to the genre. Maybe it's just that I've played so many of them. I can't finish them anymore. It's the same fatigue that I started to feel with modern shooters a few years ago.

I'll admit that open-world can still be interesting. Saints IV was creative with a lot of what it was trying to do (I still struggled to finish it, though). By contrast, look at the homogeneity of, say, Ubisoft's AAA output over the last two or three years. That's an extreme example, because you have teams sharing assets and ideas, but I think that the genre and its mechanics are becoming quite stale. You'd need a really great team and some interesting hook to make it work now.

I have my doubts about this game, and Crytek's ability to do more than a middling, shooty-shooty take on the genre.

Eh. Looks about on par with Killzone Shadow Fall to me.

Actually seems like a cool idea. Since we'll have to wait for gameplay I have no idea how to gauge the hype for this. I did enjoy Homefront 1's MP though so I'll probably pick it up if it looks to be along the same lines.

Love how people are already hating on it though. Makes me feel really hopeful for an optimistic future!

If this were China, there would be a sliver of plausibility to the game's premise. A sliver, granted, but it's still there. With North Korea taking over the south and becoming a global superpower, there is absolutely zero plausibility. It would be about as likely as Fiji taking over the world, or New Zealand conquering America. It's just so utterly, completely, stupendously implausible for it to be North Korea in any way shape or form.

And the developers know that. Like with the Red dawn remake, the enemies were originally supposed to be Chinese. Then the publisher got spooked because of a potential backlash by Chinese consumers, so hastily changed the enemy to North Korea. I mean, come on. A resurgent Japan, or a supremely nationalist SOUTH Korea are more likely enemies (although still implausible).

I really find the mental gymnastics that it would take to think of North Korea as anything other than a bothersome little 16th-century style shithole more interesting than any game could be.

I'm guessing in this game America doesn't have 2 vast oceans by its side and also has no nuclear missiles, or the largest navy + airforce, or the most experienced soldiers on the planet. Not that I'm particularly proud of such facts, but its still facts.

Is the commanding officer of the resistance an obese 40-something guy who rides a rascal scooter everywhere?

@pakattak: To me the part that seems that most unrealistic is that the "oil shortage" doesn't hurt the new Korean nation but hurts America dramatically, when we actually have the resources to do something about it (we are a massive oil producer in our own right). Korea is mostly just a bunch of steep hills with little farmland and oil.

Like I said, I find the ridiculous setting more interesting than any gameplay the game could have.

And you complain? What? Have you seen Crysis 3 maxed out? Hell, it even looks great at lower settings and runs super well. CryEngine is fantastic. No game yet released looks better than Crysis 3, and that came out well over a year ago.

@noodleunit: What do you mean "now serves EA"? The game is being developed by Crytek and published by Deep Silver. Neither are owned by EA.

@awesomeusername: What I mean is that THQ did all the work of pumping up the name, and that's why EA hung onto it - because regardless of critical reception, the name has saturated the market.

@noodleunit: But EA has nothing to do with this game. Is there another game with Homefront in the title? I'm not aware of any and as I said, EA has absolutely no stake in this game.

@awesomeusername: Doesn't matter. If this were an original IP, EA would have to blow all kinds of money to make sure people remember it. THQ already did all that work to bring it into the public consciousness, so it only makes sense to keep it.

EDIT: Whoops, brain fart. Just replace all instances of EA with Deep Silver.

@noodleunit: There ya go! I agree. Deep Silver doesn't have to do anything because the most successful franchises they publish are already established (Metro 20xx, Homefront, Saints Row). They have it easy. I'm glad though. THQ was our go to B-rated games and since they went under, we didn't really have anyone but now Deep Silver has stepped up and has been doing good lately with THQ's games.
