Hopefully Rise of Mana Isn't Terrible?

I have to say Rise Of Mana looks very interesting. I like the angel/devil character switching in the midst of attacking. But will we be seeing a bunch of toxic mobile design ruining the experience?

GB's 2014 GOTY proceedings needs an anime hair category and that game needs to win it for being the most animeist.

F2P is the antithesis of good design IMO. I would love a great new entry in the Mana series. It's been a long time. This sure doesn't look to be it.

Man, after hearing that refurbished Secret of Mana-track one minute in, I got hopeful for a second that Kikuta would compose a SD2/3'y soundtrack for this game, especially considering his recent AMA on reddit.

But the rest of the music was sadly generic. Sounded like someones bad impression of Yoko Shimomura.

Just do a solid HD update of the first three Secret of Mana games (including Seiken Densetsu 3) and put them out on Steam/PSN/XBL and leave it to rest. SD3 was really cool for its time, and it is unfortunate nothing ever came of that game....the series just went downhill after that.

Is the game made by Square Enix?

A) Yes

B) No

If you answered no, then the game has a chance of not being shit.

I was thinking the same thing. I'm totally opening up the opportunity for people to judge me but Legend of Mana is my favorite game of all time. It's what got me into gaming. This better be good..

They refuse to just do a good, modern update to the awesome 3 player RPG formula that was Secret of Mana.

Yeah, Square doesn't deserve any goodwill when it comes to microtransactions, given their recent history on the mobile platform. So I'm just gonna go ahead and assume that the business model behind this will be total shit until I'm proven wrong (which I doubt I'll be).

Secret of Mana was a bad game.

Super cautious of what microtransaction they'll put in place after the energy systems they included in Bravely Default. I had no issues with them in Bravely Default because they were basically cheats, but I have the sneaking suspicion that whatever is in here is going to be poorly implemented and core to the game.

Oh you are right. Fair enough. Although that one looks more of a behind-the-back angle, while this one maintains the top-down view of the rest of the series, which it should hopefully benefit from.

Great, time for square to revive the Mana series with their terrible new character design. As if the last few weren't bad enough. I used to really like these games, back in the SNES days they were really good. Has square made a good story since "The World Ends with You"?

So... they got the music right and nothing else.

This would be the first polygonal Mana game, I think. Doesn't look too bad, gameplay looks super enjoyable so here's hoping microtransactions don't kill it.

I was a skeptic at first, but I really enjoyed playing Touch-Screen Zelda. So, in theory, touch-screen Secret Of Mana would be awesome . . .

. . . but yeah, as everyone said, the whole free-to-play thing is brain poison to me.

I see the amount of effort going into all the art and the music and all the Legend of Mana cameos, I feel as if Square Enix has laid out this beautiful banquet on the table. Then by announcing that it will be free-to-play on mobile, it's as if they followed up this presentation by saying, "We will be proud to serve this delicious meal to you later this year . . . in some sort of suppository pill-form."

Looks like it's got some pretty strong ties to Legend of Mana, between the art style and specific characters from that game.

Wow, that story setup couldn't be any more typical JRPG-like if it tried.

Yeah. At the very least, it looks like there's more to the actual game than All the Bravest, so while I'm not sold on it, it at least paints a better first impression.

Well, that was a very interesting video, and I am sure they have thought this out. But, it is just not for me based on the video.

I do want to go play Secret of Mana again now though.

A F2P mobile game from Square Enix? Yeah, after All the Bravest, I'm going to need to see some real proof that this game isn't garbage.
