Test Drive isn't so much about racing as it is about VIRTUAL VACATION. You basically get to pretend to be Magnum PI.

Also driving games are popular. Why can shooters have several games of the same niche, but not racing? I'd say Racing is either the second most popular genre in video games or tied for it.
Indeed. Definitely not really a racing game.

Better handling is cool, and if it's any less buggy than the first one I'll be totally sold.

The one guy says "it's like you are flying".  I find that just a tad ironic since humans have already mastered flight.  If you like flying, why not fly planes, or at least develop a flight game.

Comparing driving to flying sort of makes driving seem mundane, hehe.

@zoner: it's probably 3rd. Whatever genre FarmVille fits into is the most popular. Tens, if not hundreds, of millions of people play the Zynga Ville games on facebook. The launch of the new one (CityVille?) set a record for most players ever, at like 41 million within the first day or week or month or something.

EDIT:

Also, this game looks amazing. I'm gonna wait and see the reviews that come in, but this is probably going to be a purchase. Also, another plus this game has: you can essentially make clans (they call them clubs) and race other clans (clubs). That sounds fun to me!

Don't forget about the MMO aspect of the game.
Basically in the first one you'd drive out in the open and pass another player on the same server, flash your headlights in his/her direction and start a race with him/her right away.
The driving was a bit crude and the environment kind of copy/paste but some aspects of the game were truly inventive. If they can push the enveloppe then it might help it define a new sub genre in the racing game category.

Funny fact : you can tell this gae was made in Lyon, France from the license plate of the F490 behind that bald british dude => 69

I'd consider this the 'imagination-fuelled' racing game.
Hot Pursuit is pure arcade, GT is pure sim, and Forza is a more stylised sim.

TDU2, however, seems more about character customisation, clothing, gambling at casinos, getting rich in a tangible way (as opposed to GT where money just feels like a number that limits you), and just chilling out driving around a beautiful recreation of an island.

No other driving games even attempt this kind of approach, and I'm glad TDU2 is stepping up to the plate, because personally speaking, I find things like exploring a world and buying/customising houses to be just as fun to do as the actual racing!

Absolutely loved the first game, and the handling didn't bother me at all; to hear they've made it better is great, but it hasn't changed my opinion of buy at launch.

Good to hear.

The first game didn't handle horribly, but the cars had very little weight to them and you never had a sense that the wheels were actually gripping the road at any point.

I remember the physics of the original being fuckin' horrible.

Then again, I only have the PS2 version... which sucks.

The handling is the main thing I hope they've successfully improved. The first one handled alright, but it could be significantly better. I think they're on the right track when they're talking about having a proper physics simulation as a basis because the handling in the first game felt a bit flat and the engine not taking into account enough data and variables could be the reason why.

Not so much into the idea of them evolving the douchey lifestyle thing, but still, that's such an odd thing to have in a racing game you have to appreciate it on some level.

They are definitely French.

I want this game so bad, the first one was my second favorite racing game of all time, right after Burnout Paradise, so with this, DiRT 3 and possibly the new Forza, I'll be set for years.

I did not mind the handling of the first game, it was that I had to griiiiind sooooooo muuuuch (and I still haven't gotten there) to unlock hardcore mode, or drift handling as it's called. If that's unlocked from the get go consider me sold already

Well.. it's good to hear that they've decided to make the core part of their product better. My biggest complaint with the original was the way the cars handled.
