This brings back memories, especially the music. I'd buy this just to listen to the radio stations again.

It's incredible to think that this game is ten years old. It definitely deserves its place in the history of the medium. I think I might have to revisit this, as a kind of celebration of the milestone.

Its al subjective. I feel the exact oposite because GTA3: SA was the game i got big into.

I think we both feel this way not just because the quality of the games, because theyre both great, but because they came out at the right time of our lives.

Though nobody remembers to mention when it's the anniversary of the original GTA(1)... sigh..

The only GTA I've actually finished and played lots of hours, exploring everycorner... (yeah the 3D sandbox world just don't do it for me.. I lost track of objectives and get bored quickly with these)

@nohthink said:

So... I still don't understand. I get that it's 10th anniversary but... are they re-releasing the game? Or are they just saying "hey, it has been 10 years"?

Yep, on iPhone, iPad, etc.. a new edition of the original GTA3.

Considering that I didn't like any of those games, I don't much care. A damn far cry from GTA3 and GTA:SA.

I remember when GTA games were just about being fun open world homages to crime movies.

Their modern incarnation as self serious junk with missions that are scripted from start to finish doesn't suit my tastes. Why have an open world if I can't exploit it in the least during the actual game? Why have me chase a car if it's going to be invincible and 10 feet in front of me whether I'm going 10mph or 100mph? And all of those contrivances are just there to lead me to a building filled with guys waiting to be shot.

San Andreas was a fun romp, but to me the series peaked at Vice City. That's where they got just the right blend of scripted story and open world freedom.

I'm curious if Saints Row 3 will pick up the mantle, but I'm not of the mind that what GTA lacks is goofy side content. What GTA lacks is story missions that permit some modicum of creativity: blocking traffic with stolen cars, flying to a rooftop for a sniping position, the many uses for rockets, hell... being able to pick the damn car you use in a mission.

She's on fire, fire, fire, fire, FIRE! I was a baby 11 year old when this game came out.... But that didn’t stop me from enjoying GTA I and GTA II and then GTA III when it came out. I never finished any of them because my brothers had a tendency to kick me off the PC before I made any progress, also I was easily distracted by the urge to aimlessly drive around listening to the radio, something I now enjoy doing with my reality car. Also randomly deciding to see if I could get a tank to come.

Man I hate motion blur you can't turn off. Glad the PC version didn't have it.

Just to let you guys know, you can toggle that motion blur off in the options menu in the console versions of all the GTA games. I always turned it off. Also, GTA is the shit yo.

Great memories playing GTAIII. Spent all day getting lost in Liberty City, I remember the sun burning my eyes when I eventually stepped out of my front door.

Oh, God! And the first time I got behind the wheel of my car having played nothing else for three days straight. Them's were some lucky pedestrians that day!

I remember doing anything to play this game. Being 10 and trying to get an M-rated game was hard. I will buy this again, even though Vice City is better in almost every way.

Turn Trails off in the Display options. I have no idea why it exists, but it's on by default in both GTAIII and Vice City.

Whoa, what is up with that insane blur effect? Was that in the console versions? I played on PC.

Anyway, this game was amazing at the time. It's the only open world game I ever just ran around in doing crazy stuff. After GTA3 I had my fill of that and played them all straight, but I remember long nights of just messing around with GTA3's world. The game still holds up in my opinion, it's more arcade style and simple fun compared to even Vice City. Force a ton of AA and AF on it and the PC version still looks pretty good too, other than the cars popping in.

I know you could turn on that motion blur on PC and I think on the Xbox version as well. I'm not sure if it was in the original PS2 version. It looked like shit so I never had it on longer than to realize "hey this looks like shit".

Man those graphics do NOT hold up.

Well considering its been 10 years I'd say they do hold up remarkably well.

Remember that 10 years is a millennia in video game years - it's shocking that we even recognize that as graphics at all and not some random sequence of flashing colours.

I'd like you to remember that the following games were also released in 2001. Metal Gear Solid 2, Final Fantasy X, Luigi's Mansion, Devil May Cry, Dead or Alive 3, Pikmin, Super Smash Bros. Melee, and Jak and Daxter.

None of those games look like garbage. Its not even an open world thing, GTA has always suffered from ugly character and visual design.

No, it really is an open world thing. None of those games have anywhere near the combination of scripting, AI, and open environments that GTAIII had in a particular scene. You have to make trade-offs somewhere.

That said, could they have made somewhat better artistic choices for the game they were making? Maybe, but it's also possible that they probably had a particular artistic vision for the game that butt up against hardware limitations of the time.

@nohthink: They are releasing an iphone/ipad version and a version for some android devices. Plus selling 10th anniversary stuff. And it's also slated for some "as yet unannounced platforms."

I'd love to play the unedited version. I'd also love the GTA3 missions set in the GTA4 version of Liberty City. Same missions in different environments = a whole new experience.

I haven't played most of those games because they're all console games, but just a general comment: GTA3 was an open world game and most of the ones you mentioned were not I believe. There is a massive difference with what you can put on the screen in a linear game versus an open world game.

And I think GTA3 holds up just fine. On PC anyway.

One of my college roomates had just gotten a PS2 when this game came out, but never got a memory card. I started playing the game and I just left the PS2 on pause for hours at a time for several days before beating it. When he finally got a card and went on to play the game the disc was ruined. (To be fair, I did ask if he was cool with it as it was happening and he said yes and declined my offer to purchase a new one. I would later go on to take a floor lamp which might have been his when I moved out) Had a great time later on replaying it on Xbox with the Vice City double pack and San Andreas subsequently.

I played this on PC with mouse and keyboard and my friends couldn't handle the thought of not using a controller. Also playing on PC allowed me to use mods and change the game data to allow me to do things like... make the tank handle like a sports car.

On a side note, I was once interested in Dead Island, now I have nothing but scorn for it.

It would have been great if they gave it the Halo anniversary treatment and did an full HD remake... and remaking the controls; I can't go back to the old ways.

Anyway, awesome game. I have tons of memories in that entire franchise.
