Doesn't this just completely devalue the character of Lightning that they keep doing this? I mean, that's assuming anybody takes the story for Final Fantasy XIII seriously at all.

So is Lightning Returns like Barbie for FF fans? I mean, every trailer they put up is about"Hey, you can where this uniform or that uniform and we are totally not banking on your nostalgia for FF VII".

@shevar: The outfits are part of the battle system, similar to X-2's from what I understand. I totally agree the Cloud Soldier outfit and junk is definitely banking on nostalgia but I'm not going to throw stones, especially when stuff like the MK9 Classic Ninjas has happened.

I like how they do this, shows at least the Final Fantasy guys are aware of the current trends in games with stuff like this and Mass Effect.

I kinda like Lightning as Lara Croft more than I like Lara Croft, for some reason.

This is really the English VO they have for Lightning? I haven't played any of the XIII games yet, and this is not exactly what I was expecting.

Honestly? A decent step with costume and weapons. What I would want is abilities tied to the costumes as well, like the Job system. Having Biotic powers if you pull out Mass Effect armor, or Assassin powers if you put on a pointy hoodie.

HOW BOUT WE ADD SOME ADAM JENSEN AND AGENT 47, TOO, HUH SQUEENIX??

EDIT: In hindsight, Lightning sporting the Adam Jensen look does seem pretty bad-ass though, complete with elbow blades if I had it my way.

Sure, this is not nearly as weird as strapping a bunch of moggle toys together and calling it a dress.

The Ice Axe is a nice touch but the small Riot Shield is a bit silly.

Super excited for the game, and these weird little bonus tie in costumes are pretty neat. Liked having the N7 armor in XIII-2.

As someone who has not at all been interested in FF XIII or its sequel, all of the dumb costume stuff in this game actually makes me want to check it out. That's probably a bad thing for people who actually liked FF XIII.

Well, considering there was Assassin's Creed costume DLC for XIII-2 this isn't all that surprising. Brand synergy and all that jazz. Still sceptical about the game itself, though.

@shevar@zacagawea: Seems that way, only way creepier - the devs did some press event a while back in Japan talking about how they'd give her a well-needed boost to her bra-size, and the customization options are so great because you can equip a smaller shield on her to get a better view. So, yeah...

Honestly, I think the Tomb Raider costume looks better then what she is supposed to be wearing.

I see no problem with this. You can also but her in a black mage moomoo. Would you be happier if she was in a burqa? When you grow up you learn that human sexuality is not something to be ashamed of and when women have it it doesn't make them sluts or bimbos.

Having never played FFXIII, all I have is the memory of seeing those first pre-PS3 videos of FFXIII, and oh how much I wanted to play that game at that time. If only I knew what they'd do with the game.

Darnit. I came here just to say this.

eh, the difference is that Lightning is a game character designed by men (and she isn't too bad from what I remember of 13, certainly not sexualized much) and these costumes can become pandering and silly in a demeaning way. Lightning is not a sentient, actual woman making a choice on what she wears and how she carries herself, she's an avatar you stare at for tens of hours. You control her(in a straightforward game) and dress her up to your liking. It's not really the same thing.

Anyway, these games seem impossible to actually look forward to. Nothing exciting about them after XIII proper was the biggest drag in a while, and XII was such a smart, cool game if not flawed.

This game is going to be fucking horrible. I can't wait to buy it day 1.

I dunno about the story, the art direction, or the voice acting, but the mechanics in the demo were really fun, and ultimately that's all that really matters to me.

Is it only pandering if men enjoy it? I am curious because I never see this in any other situation, everytime I see the word pandering it's in this type of situation. Why is it always pandering when it comes to this type of thing? So are you saying that women in real life pander to men as well when they dress all sexy and such? or are they doing that to feel sexy for themselves? Is it only when a man creates something sexual for men that it's pandering? Or am I missing something here? I don't think these costumes are pandering, I honestly think these costumes were made because he wanted to make em, nothing more.

It's really starting to feel like society is trying real hard to stifle male sexuality, make men feel bad for liking things of a sexual nature. It's fucking sad.
