 ROCK IT REA-oh wait...

Anyways, how in the holy fuck are you supposed to read off the numbers for some of those solos? I really hope they put in a no fail mode for the real guitar part of the game.

As cool as this seems, I don't like the way they display the information with the same "scrolling down" style as the regular plastic instruments. This is pretty much a vertical way of showing tabulature, as opposed to the standard horizontal tabulature (that "scrolls" right to left as regular sheet music does) that can be found anywhere and everywhere.

I understand why they chose to do it this way, since that's what everyone has come to expect from these games, but it's NOT an efficient way of showing the fret information you need to know. I'm no expert on licensing issues and such, but if that's what kept them from using the superior horizontal tabulature then I guess I can forgive them. Granted, if they had gone that route they would've had to do drastical changes to the overall technical and visual presentation of the game.

I really want them to explain clearly why my synth-guitar won't work. It already has a divided midi pickup attached to the body, so it should be able to work the same way as this does.

On the pro guitars do you always have to strum for it to register or can you fret tap?

 A. You're expected to be able to play PRO (Hard & Expert, especially) based upon rote rehearsal and muscle memory, like traditional learning of a guitar. The real key once you're at that level is the chord names that appear to the left of the highway.

B. No Fail is a modifier that can be enabled at anytime via the overshell.

That looks confusing as shit, why not just have a scrolling  horizontal tablature? That vertical setup is unnecessarily complicated.

Harmonix has stated that they have explored multiple ways of displaying the tabulature, and that this was the most effective way from what they worked with. Also, the highway would be more constricted horizontally than vertically in the multiplayer setting. Plus, from a personal standpoint, it'd really eff me up to be drumming, and see one track scrolling horizontally in the midst of the other three vertical note tracks.

I believe that in order  to display any horizontal tabulature effectively, you'd have to essentially add another vocal-type track. Furthermore, do you place the horizontal guitar track at the top or the bottom of the screen? Really, it becomes a big mess.

Yeah I don't think you're going to be sight reading the Crazy Train solo in that setup.  But then I'm not sure you really could anyway.  I'm not that bothered about their notation since you'll only be using it as a reminder.

Again, if only they let you plug in a real guitar and fuck their left-hand positional technology.  Not buying another entry level guitar to play with a video game, and I may not buy the game at all as a result.  I love pro mode, but buying RB3 without being able to utilize it with their instruments seems like a tease.

I guess if you don't have a guitar and want to learn this sounds like a good deal, but otherwise it seems like a huge waste of money to play on (in many cases) an inferior guitar to whatever else you're already playing on.
And if you want to play a real guitar along with Rock Band songs you can already do that, as long as you don't care that you're not being scored on it...

Love me some Rock Band, but every day closer to release it looks less like a game and more like work.  With all the effort that has clearly gone into this, is there going to be anything fun for us groups of dorks who play on medium or hard, either solo or in groups of 2-3?

@siln: Yes, basic gameplay will still be there, along with the standard DLC releases each week. I mean, they're only coming out with 12 songs by The Doors as DLC at launch, with packs by Bon Jovi and Billy Joel forthcoming.  I play solo 98% of the time, myself, and look to improve my own scores.

Bottom line, all of the PRO stuff you're hearing about is ON TOP OF all of the Basic Gameplay offerings from Rock Band 2, instrument-wise.

Yeah, it could potentially become a big mess. I agree. But what about 3 horizontal lines (guitar, bass & vocals) and a vertical one on the right (or left) for the drums? I think that could work well, and it wouldn't be nearly as constricted as this. I think it's safe to say in 2010 that the majority of people own a widescreen tv.

The thing that bugs me the most about this system is that it's essentially impossible to read those parts with fast solo notes quick enough with the narrow and compressed vertical view. If those notes were displayed in the traditional horizontal form and came scrolling from right to left (much like they do in programs like Guitar Pro), then a somewhat good guitarist would be able to play it on his first try, even being totally unfamiliar with the song.

Yep.  You're pretty much looking at just memorizing the song ahead of time and playing along with the way it is now.  No way I could sightread like this.  It'd be nice if they implemented a horizontal version setup along the same lines as Guitarpro-style animated tab.

As a musician, I'm not at all insterested in the casual Rock Band games but this thing has me intrigued.  Not keen on the button guitar though, that just looks awkward.  For the midi Squire, I'm curious how the game will handle things like tapping and bends.  Will there be any notation for that stuff, or?  I noticed in the Crazy Train solo in this video, the tapping section is transcribed for 100% left hand fingerings, which is inaccurate to how that part is properly played.

This looks difficult to read at high speeds compared to tablature.
