Lost Planet 3's Got An Unexpected Spark

It's a prequel, it's coming from Spark, and it doesn't look much like the previous games to bear the Lost Planet name.

But studios like Bizarre Creations and Black Rock get shut down because their games didn't set the world on fire. Go Japan!

I always wanted to like Lost Planet, but word of mouth always made me stay away. Here's to hoping third time's a charm!

@ZarakixKenpachi: The face doesn't look too bad, not really that bad at all. And what do you mean by no detail?

So this is gonna suck then? I mean Capcom's history with American developers is horrible, and Spark has consistently proven to be one of the worst developers of shooters over the course of this generation.

Maybe Capcom should get into making animated features as they can't seem to get the gameplay thing write anymore. Great trailer though.

I loved LP 1 at the time, had a lot of fun with 2, and am quite looking forward to this.

Doesn't look much like the previous LP games? It's in snow, there are mechs, and big glowing orange bug monsters? What part of that is new to you, Jeff?

This was entertaining and already orders more coherent than anything I saw of lost Planet 2. LP 2 I mostly remember was of the general with the VA who was the anouncer of crackdown, wearing a toilet seat for a hat.

Also, Spark Unlimited (Legendary & Turning Point) seems like another bad idea like Slant Six making a spin off of Resident Evil. Another testament that Japanese games are not better created by Western developers.

That just seems like a testament to Japanese publishers being unable to choose competent Western developers, instead opting for developers that have alright ideas but fairly poor execution.

Lost Planet 2 was basically Monster Hunter with guns. If they stick to that idea and don't change it too much, i'll be super excited about this.

However, the fact they're showing off a main character already tells me they're going to make it a "real" story mode, so it probably wont be 1-4 player cooperative, where you bring in your own character and level up, get new gear, etc. Huge bummer if that's true.

Hope they don't fuck it up too much. Lost Planet 2 was actually amazing once you got used to the controls.

I said this exact thing.

The character looks a little more action figure-y, though.

Campcom has a knack for making awesome-looking games that play horribly. I want to be excited for this but I've been burned too many times. Plus the developer-- yuck.

First two games had a really interesting style but the story and ponderous controls sucked, really bad. Interesting to see what this team can do with the franchise.

If Lost Planet 2 had some actual semblance of proper controls, it would have been amazing. Hopefully my hands won't have to tango across the controller for this one.

Honestly I agree, I think Blue Castle games (Canadian I know but still Western) has done the best in my opinion out of all western developed Capcom games. To be honest, I think it has more to do with the cost of production and acquisition of open studios. We all have aspired developers we would love to see, have a say in plausible franchises. But looking out at American Developers, I cant see any major developer being able to make anything besides a FPS rendition of a Japanese concept. If your talking about Independent than there are quite a few. Not to mention a large majority of American 3rd person focused developers tend to be second party Sony teams (i.e. Sony Santa Monica, Naughty Dog, Suckerpunch) making the cross platform approach, a little difficult. Maybe Ready at Dawn, but unlikely.

Could he say "This is Jimmy" at some point in the game? Cool trailer, and I appreciate the premise of a prequel to the original, but at this point I'm not holding out much hope.

The character while seeming pretty archetypal at least seems alright. Can't say I've ever heard of Spark though. I hope it turns out well though, and jam some co-op in there awell thanks.

Nintendo has also managed to partner with some decent Western developers. Retro Studios seems incredibly talented; they apparently had some cancelled projects earlier in their partnership with Nintendo, but once they released Metroid Prime, everything after that has been of pretty good quality. And while lesser known, Nintendo contracted Next Level Games to make the Mario Strikers series and Punch-Out!! for the Wii, which were quite fun to play (Next Level Games also made the Captain America game that was a decent Arkham Asylum clone, and are currently working on Luigi's Mansion 2).

Nintendo and Sony certainly seem capable of finding Western developers who can represent their games well. There are decent American and Canadian developers that Capcom could be partnering with, so I don't understand how Capcom keeps fucking it up so bad.

Oh.... oh this is being made... but the same team that made Turning Point. Oh... oh.... no. No.

Yeah, trackrecord isn't everything..... but it does count quite a bit. If a restaurant served you 4 crappy meals in a row, you're not getting your hopes up for the fifth meal.

But cool monster design though. Sort of a cross between a spider and a crab.

Haters are going to fucking hate.

Dead Rising 2 was extremely good and a Western developer helped on that.

LP2 was actually pretty fucking brilliant especially tracking the different points of the story across different fractions to join up at the end.

Yeah I totally agree, Donkey Kong Country Returns was one of the strongest titles I have seen from a Nintendo exclusive in a very long time. Also, Luigi's Mansion 2 looks great and I heard Patrick say in a Bombcast that the game has been done a while now (I could be mistaken). I wonder what has been keeping the development back.

I think what needs to happen is more collaborations than recreations, some concepts just don't translate as well. I couldn't see an american developer make an Asura's Wrath 2. While I can't see a Japanese developer making Fallout 4. But I would love to see Japanese developers run wild with american tech like "Frostbyte 2". Likewise an American developer like DICE, using Japanese tech like Kojima's "Fox Engine" for games like Mirrors Edge 2. I think the the components are there, were just putting them in backwards.

Maybe, just maybe, a crappy developer and a crappy franchise can somehow combine powers of mediocrity to make a bad-ass game. Chances are slim, which is precisely why I'm excited - if it sucks, no one will bat an eye, but if it's awesome, it'll be the awesomest awesome ever.

I had heard that Sparks was working on a new Star Wars Battlefront game. It looks like that probably isnt true if they are making this. I can decide if im relieved because Sparks makes shit games or bummed that its just that much more likely that a new Battlefront Game will never be released.

Didn't they also bring out a MASSIVE patch that changed and improved the game a lot? Both LP games are in my backlog, waiting to be played (along with many others *sigh*) so I'm still looking forward to it. I kept reading about that patch and how it fixed a lot of the things people didn't like. If that's the case, I think it's criminally unfair that the press generally brushes LP2 off as a terrible mess of a game just because that's what it was at its launch when people reviewed it. This would be one of those cases where a game should be reevaluated or at least looked at in its current form, if improvements have been made post-launch.

But the first two weren't that great :\

They were tolerable, but they BOMBED (okay, the second one did. The first sold okay because of being a "near launch" title) hard in the west. I said it when LP2 was announced, I'll say it again: Who the fuck wants a Lost Planet sequel outside of Japan? Japan is the only one playing the terrible multiplayer modes anymore and the singleplayer was tolerable but not anything earth shattering that needed a sequel.

THAT SAID: The trailer looks more "survival" than Biohazard 6. Which is crazy given that _was_ a Survival Horror series back in the day. *sigh* Oh, Capcom. How you've fallen. :(

@LiquidElite: 100% agree. His calmness makes him seem like a more seasoned, charming, rogue - a Nathan Drake or Han Solo type. I actually like his character so much that I'm hoping this game will be good, but the track records for the franchise and dev team, sadly, aren't great.

Make it a third person shooter on the ground. Then, make it first person while in the mech. I'd like to see the inside of the cockpit as well for once. No bullshit!
