Looks like you do have straight up ammo, which is kind of sad. Oh well, makes it feel more like a shooter I guess.

I think the limited ammo might just be for the special kinds. They're seem to be trying to make Tali more of a character this time around, which is nice.

Ammo!? That's a disappointment.

That was really an unsolicited spoiler. "Cerberus rebuilt me". I tried avoiding it but i guess it clears some things up.

Looks like they're taking even more queues from Gears of War by adding the annoying exploding 4 legged things.

I'm still a little confused about the ammo system.  You clearly see an ammo counter, with the total number of bullets you have, but what does that bar next to the ammo counter mean?  How long before your weapon overheats?  Maybe it's an active reload which is faster than just continuosly holding down the fire button.

Untill we play game i geuss we just don't know.

@Deevster: hey those 4 legged things were awesome

Omg, those exploding robots are totally Bullsquids from Half Life. Also, this is the PC version judging from the toolbar in the UI, so awesome.

It's not just sad, it's just straight up dumb. BioWare tries to sell it by stating that now you can manage your overheating more strategically but in ME1 you could also do that by not firing your weapon for a second.
Even an in-universe explanation must be really contrived. I mean, what kind of a military force decides to have their soldiers carry more stuff?
The combat seems improved a lot, except this ammo thing is just bullshit.

@RVonE: couldnt agree more kid

Ammo issues aside, you all have to admit that the combat has been vastly improved. The animations, the gameplay and the controls all seem to form a very interesting 3rd person shooter.

This is from an entry in the Galactic Codex in ME1:

"The ammo magazine is a simple block of metal. The gun's internal computer calculates the mass needed to reach the target based on distance, gravity, and atmospheric pressure, then shears off an appropriate sized slug from the block. A single block can supply thousands of rounds, making ammo a non-issue during any engagement."

Yeah, like I said, ammo in ME2 is bullshit.

I want this game so bad. I'm not sure if I want to bring my Adept over from the first game because the gunplay looks so good in this.

@RVonE: They use thermal clips so if it does overheat they just replace the thermal clip. Yeah, it is technically ammo but it is used so you don't have to wait for the cool down of your gun.

I feel for those people that aren't into Gears of War because it's invading every game.

Lovin the robot chatter.

Yes, that is how BioWare tries to sell it to us. But think about it, they say that it serves the purpose of enabling the player to strategically manage heat. However, there was an excellent system in place in ME1 to achieve exactly the same and it was called 'stop firing your weapon for a second and then resume'. Now think about the in-universe explanation: what kind of military would give their soldiers more shit to carry when it doesn't actually improve anything over the old system? Also, have you looked closely at the video? If you did, you would have seen that everythime Shepard reloads, the weapon's heat is reset. However, you would also have noticed that there is also another counter--one could call it an ammo counter--that also decreases. This ammo counter shows a number in the range of a 200-300; a far cry from the "thousands of rounds" that the ME1 codec speaks of.
While I am not saying that the combat sucks; it is clear that most of the combat aspects are improved a lot in ME2. But I cannot escape the impression that the heat-ammo stuff is there for the sole reason to make it look more like a legitimate third-person shooter. And that's bullshit.

@RVonE: Yep, it's definitely ammo clips. But honestly, I don't really care. Even if they don't explain any of it in-game, I'd be totally fine with it.

If I remember correctly, the ammo issue is due to the type. Regular ammo is supposedly a non-issue, but you can load up incendiary rounds, electric ones, etcetera and I think (or at least hope) that those are the ones being used in this playthrough, and thus why they are limited.

Can't have Shephard running around spewing fire 24/7, can we?

Those robot "dogs" remind be a lot of the alien "dogs" from Half-Life.

@strangeling: exactly what i though when i saw them. Gave me the same creepy feeling too!

ME 1 had a very similar combat system.  Its just improved.
