I've never seen a fighter game trailer so earnest about what the online multiplayer will be like for anyone who tries to break into these games. Thanks for the warning, King of Fighters.

Thats some pretty crazy stuff.

I'd love to see the US Sports Team and Heidern return to this series some day. I kind of lost interest in it once I realized the roster wasn't going to get any more appealing for me past 98.

The art is so fucking sexy. I hope they have streamlined the process of making these high res sprites because I think its about time they start rolling out new games in series like Last Blade.

So Atlus released a trailer that basically tells me "if you miss a single block, you might as well put down the controller until the next round comes up as one single combo string can do full health damage?"

No thanks. Not interested in the game.

This trailer goes for maximum flash which, while sexy, misrepresents the way the game actually plays. These combos require 5 bars of super meter and 100% drive meter, which means that they are ONLY performable by the third character in your team of 3 (the first and second characters max out at 3 and 4 bars of super, respectively), and that they require you to not spend meter on anything else in the match. The way a typical match flows, you are not likely to see a 100% combo. Typically matches begin as Street Fighter-y poking/zoning games, and combo possibilities and offensive/defensive options open up as meter is gained, with each player maybe getting one opportunity at a 70-80% combo toward the end of the match.

So, if a player busts out these combos to take out one character in a match, it means they have been reduced to their last character and must play a solid, meterless, low-damage game against 2 of their opponent's 3 characters, effectively 66% of their opponent's life. Not too different from SF4 where you can score 30-40% with an ultra attack, but must take the rest of the life bar simply with solid play.

Yeah if the opponents are Mexican, Korean, Chinese, Brazilian, or Chilean. This game is going to be new to a lot of players and everyone is gonna drop combos because of high execution that KOF stands by. This aint Marvel.

Someone please, please tell me there is a combo-breaker system or parrying system or something similar in place to stop this from even remotely happening to me during a match.

There is a roll escape where you can get out of blockstun at the cost of a bar. As KOF is relatively strict in execution, don't worry too much.

I can't remember, was there a roll escape in previous games? For some reason, I'm remembering a roll move you could do as part of the game mechanics in KOF2001 or around that era, but I remember it as a defensive move against projectiles for no meter cost, not a blockstun sort of thing.

For sure, 98 and 2002 had roll escapes which cost meter.

Man, I really hope the online in this game is worth a damn. I'd love to sink some hours into getting good at this, but it's hard enough to find people who are willing to fight me in MK locally, let alone a deep cut like KOF.

Also, under no circumstances should you watch the KOF movie. It's on Netflix and has Maggie Q as Mai, Terry Bogard wears a suit for most of the movie and Kyo is a white dude.

Something tells me that KOF movie is like the first SF movie: So utterly bad it's good, and it doesn't seem like they took it too seriously.

Will this game provide any value unlike: SFIV, SSFIV, SSFIV: AE, MVC 3, UMVC 3, KOF 12, and SFIII OE? I also heard that SNK is locking a recycled sprite on the disc - Iori Yagami - so I'm not quite sold.

Come on SNK, you need the money badly so your company can survive. Locking a recycled character on the disc isn't going to get me sold. Might as well whore out some prostitutes to earn some money.

I really dig the art for the character models. Not the way they're drawn but whatever they're doing to render them like that. It's cool.

And that's about it, I was never really a fan of KoF

This looks bananas. I hope they didn't stick to the insanely strict execution like they did in XII. I'm particularly bad at learning input timings and don't think I wanna go through it again... *stares at Tekken*

No I like fighting games, I just don't like paying for bare bone fighting games with shitty DLC deals like the current Capcom fighting games.

I guess I blame the companies that were still putting out new fighting games prior to SFIV that actually provided some value like Tekken 5, Viruta Fighter 4, Soul Caliber 2 & 3, the MK games on PS2 and Xbox. The fact that those games had free unlockables costumes (Or the ability to customize a character's outfit) made me upset at Capcom for charging extra cash for them, while the games itself are very bare bones.

So you're against perfectly respectable fighting games, just on the principle that you have to pay for alternate costumes? The DLC era has begun, and unfortunately we have to live with losing some (usually irrelevant) game content that gets turned into DLC. Wishing that it was the PS2 era again will not make it so, nor will it magically erase microtransactions and online marketplaces from existence.

Well, that is clearly a level of play that I will never reach. Hopefully this game is good, because I do like me some King of Fighters, for as many weird directions that series seemed to take after '98.

Don't. . . . .give. . . . . .me. . . . . . . .a. . . . . . . . . shallow. . . . . . . . . . . . .view.

Anyways, so you're all for overpaying for bare bone fighting games with a shitty netcode and shitty DLC deals? That's how Capcom fighting games are summed in a nutshell. Yes the gameplay is good for a game like MVC 3, so was KOF 12, but I do remember that the main complain for KOF 12 was it was so bare bones with a shitty netcode for online play, that it caused the game to get panned by critics and fans. So yeah, it's not just about DLC costumes.

It's funny how MVC 3 and KOF 12 have so much in common, and yet, MVC 3 gets better reviews for some reason. It seems like game reviewers don't know what they're talking about.

You do know that you can customize a character's outfit in games like Virtua 5 and Tekken 6 for free and not as DLC right? So how does the "DLC era" prevent Capcom from having costumes as free unlockables is in the final game? It's plain and simple - greed. There is now way to defend that and by saying "We have to live with it" doesn't help.

Single player campaign, multiple modes of play, and unlockable content was irrelevant to the shooter genre in the 90's, they were mostly about being popular in the competitive scene. Times have change, so did the shooter genre, as a result, most of the shooter games have gotten all have that content in those games, even if the competitive players still don't give two shits about story or other content in a shooter game. Some of those game do have shitty pre-order incentive or shitty DLC deals, but at least they're not bare bones like Capcom's games.

Those DLC costumes became a standard because of guys like you defending them and possibility supporting them. And the thing about that is that you're not affecting how one company does business, you're affecting the entire industrial. Locked characters on the disc was something that Capcom never thought of doing until they saw that Arc System was getting away with it. Beforehand, locked characters seem like something that no company would do because people assumed that it would cause so much outrage, but apparantly there's enough people out there that are dumb enough to fall for it. MK 9 wouldn't have DLC costumes if Capcom wasn't successful, hell Arkham City wouldn't have the Batman costumes as a pre-order incentive as well. And things don't get better with shitty DLC if successful, it gets worse.

And don't tell me that you don't care about DLC because you're apart of the competitive scene or whatever, that fact that you're defending it show that you do care.

@The_LMFAO_Guy: I wasn't trying to defend DLC, so much as point out that it's part of the way the video game industry currently works. And sure, if you think a game has poor net code, that is an entirely valid reason to steer clear of a game if you have no intention of playing it locally with people. I didn't bring it up because, when I made my comment, you had only mentioned DLC.

The few things I can think of that I've bought DLC for were for things like Fallout 3 and Borderlands, so I'm generally only inclined to buy significant DLC that is nearly an expansion pack, as opposed to <$5 DLC that is cosmetic. You're free to boycott fighting game DLC that you think is just a greedy cashgrab, and I'm certainly with you on that. That sends a clearer message than just boycotting the game altogether. If the DLC sells poorly, they might rethink what they're offering as DLC. If the game sells poorly, they might just think that people have grown tired of their fighting game series in general, without realizing why you're really not buying it. That is the point I was getting at.

I have doubts about that. Like I said about KOF 12, the game was panned by critics and fans due to non-DLC related issues, and yet SNK was willing to make another sequel in the KOF series. SNK is also aware of the problems of KOF 12, hell, journalist even told the producer of KOF 13 about what problems people had with KOF 12 in interviews. Companies like SNK know the problems that fans have with their games. It's ridiculous to only pay attention to sales figures and not criticism, especially if it's a sequel to a popular franchise.

If companies what me sold, then sell me a game with enough content and a solid netocde. The fact that Capcom's games are bare bones along with a terrible netcode  makes it insulting. Also, I do remember Capcom actually provided  content for Alpha 3, and haven't done such a thing for any other SF game since then.

Everything in these games is so weird. That lady is called "Mature", King is a girl, Maxima a guy and Ash person is a dude! Crazy stuff.
