Metal Gear Solid V or The Phantom Pain or Whatever They'll Eventually Call It: Debut Trailer

Well it's obviously metal gear.

I think the thing to talk about here is how fucking unsettling this trailer was. I got really uncomfortable when the hall of people were just getting mowed down.

"from FOX, two phantoms were born." Ground Zeroes and this Phantom Pain make the one MGS V (FOX). This looks next gen to me.

The 'open your eyes' and 'am I in hell' stuff seems to point towards it being some kind of dream sequence though. Wasn't the bad guy from the GZs trailer all burned up? Maybe this is his nightmare. (Or maybe Keifer's that guy, he's all bandaged up)

I was gonna say: Have you ever even played an MGS game? They're fantastic, but incredibly ridiculous at a nearly constant rate. That first one on the PlayStation appeared more normal at first but then it gets ludicrous pretty quickly.

This looks like some weird mix between MGS, 999, and...um...LSD? Kojima makes the weirdest freaking trailers.

theres a psycho mantis AND a pyro in this trailer , mabye hes being tormented by the crazy ppl hes killed and theyre somehow manifesting in real life , and its all part of a goverment superweapon plan eheh

It's going to be called Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain. Seems pretty obvious. All of them but the first have a subtitle.

yes, Kojima is noted for saying Project Ogre is NOT MGS5, but a Skyrim-like open world game in production, BUT,

there is a well-known Japanese fairy tale (The Ogre of Rashomon), which is about five knights/warriors, where one is goaded into going out at night during a storm and seeing if the terrible ogre truly exists. this guy ends up chopping off the ogre's arm, and keeping it in a box. the ogre comes back one day, disguised as his old nursemaid, to take it back. hmmmmmmmmmmm...

and,

"From FOX, two phantoms were born"--Ground Zeroes has Zero, original commander of FOX. Zero comes to have a massive falling out with Big Boss...who this fellow in the trailer resembles. the "left arm? or right arm?" issue is also interesting, because in the MGS 25th anniversary picture of Ground Zero 'poster,' the words, "From FOX, two phantoms were born" are actually written back-to-front/mirrored. 'Fox' also being the name of the engine, and Kojima logo. 'phantoms' being like illusions or trick of the eye (or even red herring), where this very-new youtube account and Moby Dick Studio (the elusive great white that will end up killing Kojima) website is one, as is the current stuff out there for Ground Zeroes. hmmmmmmmmmmm...

the assets in Ground Zeroes trailer and this look so similar that, in fact, i can almost see the Ground Zeroes scene where they get on the heli, rip off their FOX (XOF) patches, and start storming into some base lead right into the events of this trailer. try watching the two back to front.

so...my current theory is this:

I am betting it's Liquid. He's missing an arm. He is in a Hospital with a UK flag, and we know that he was in the SAS. So, I am betting that somehow Liquid survived the end of MGS1 and now he's back in this game.

Or they're pulling a Mario 2 and it's all gonna be a dream. Another Possibility is "Metal Gear Hill: Tactical Horror Espionage".

@outerabiz: Well, it's MGS related in someway. I'm tempering expectations after MGS4 and his history for throwing double birds at his fans when they least expect it.

But Konami is *fucked* so that's not likely. That company needs MGS titles that to keep its gaming division alive. My money is on MGS5.

Just had an interesting thought. Maybe the "V has come to." line is a reference to Big Bosses clones. V = roman numeral 5. Maybe there is/was a 4th clone, and this is the 5th one.

My mind has been thoroughly fucked.

This is basically all I could ever want and more out of a MGS trailer. Pure abstract lunacy. Fuckin' love Kojima.

Well there are a few things here that point towards it being MGS related. The most obvious points being, he looks like snake, it looks like the new Fox engine and Psychomantis was floating in the background at the end (pretty significant last point).

Then I looked at the Ground Zeroes trailer again, In that Snake has an eye patch on, Solid Snake never loses his eye, he just gets an eye patch in MGS4 that is used to give us the HUD, his eye still works fine but he has clearly lost his eye in the ground zeroes trailer - in this the same eye has a bandage over it.

Also the guy who is helping you has clearly had his face burned up hence the bandages all over his head - in the Ground Zeroes trailer the guy you see at the start with the "XOF" badge looks a lot like he has had his face burned badly. I'm fairly certain there is a link here..

Edit: I didnt really pay attention to the time lines.. this could easily not be Solid snake and be big boss given the age of the guns.. Also Psychomantis burned down a village or something, this is possibly a reference to that?

I don't like the metal gear games nor have I really played one for more then an hour or two. The way the lighting was being done at the start made me think it was a new Kane and Lynch game, but when it went supernatural I had no idea. The mullet and facial hair made me think of snake, but I have no history with the series beyond hearing people talk about it over the years so it made no sense to me.

@crusader8463: I guess that makes more sense. I've only played a few hours of Metal Gear Solid 4 and I recognized the animation style, and I instantly recognized the face from seeing so much Metal Gear around in general. Plus the engine looked just like that gameplay bit they showed of the "new Metal Gear" game on the new engine.

Whatever this is, it looks awesome.

Well I'd be lying if I said that I was actually looking forward to another Kojima outing. Truth is, IMO, Kojima is put up way too high on a pedestal for his MGS games. I've played and finished all the console Metal Gears and yes the stories are bat shit insane and the characters usually follow suit, but what really turns me off of Kojima's famous series are the endless cutscenes he puts into his games. Why he feels the need to have hour long movies in there is beyond me. You're not a movie director there Kojima, for the love of God stop acting as one.

As for this being MGS5, again I'd be lying if I said I was looking forward to it. That said I will be keeping my eyes on this game. Hopefully the 2 and 1/2 day long cutscenes are out as well I hope they get some new animators in there cause I'm sick to death of Snake moving and jumping like a popsicle stick. If all that comes to be and once the game hits $19.99 I may just have to check it out.

That trailer maybe showing a dream sequence found within the game. It does make sense if it is a dream sequence since dreams tend to become bizarre at some point.

Huh, my memory of Liquid Ocelot inside a Metal Gear Ray showing off his arm has him raising up his left arm. My mistake then.

So wait, we have this game, Ground Zeros, and Rising: Revengeance or whatever that game is called coming out? That's kind of a lot of Metal Gear stuff. Although I suppose this game and Ground Zeros are probably years out at this point.

There are some white flower petals floating in the air when he looks at his prosthetic arm, for me that's a pretty big hint that this is connected to Snake-Eater and Big Boss. Fire whale and fire pegasi/unicorn are obviously hallucinations, and I like the detail how the Snake-like character is so emaciated due to apparently having been in a coma for a long time.

The whole fake developer thing reminds of all those tv-ads that were in MGS4.

All in all, this looks pretty amazing to me on a graphical level and I hope the gameplay will deliver.

IIRC, Liquid was missing his right left arm after the jeep crash at the end of MGS. Ocelot's hand wasn't cut off until Grey Fox did it during Shadow Moses. I think Big Boss lost one of his arms during the fight with snake in Metal Gear 1 or Metal Gear 2 also, but I could be wrong on that. It's been a while.

@Danin@FearMyFlop: Either way I'm looking forward to seeing this game announced for real as the next game in the MGS series. 4 was crazy, had to replay the whole thing again recently to remind myself how nuts it really is.
