I love Mega Man, but this game doesn't seem my speed. It looks vaguely rhythm game-ish.

Is there a word for "We couldn't make the game we wanted for legal reasons but we love the original IP so we're going to make one like it?" because I'm seeing tons of games like these nowadays. Nothing wrong with it, it's just interesting.

I wish they had used sprites instead of 3d models on characters, but the gameplay still looks pretty interesting.

Promising? This looks like the blandest most uninspired thing I've seen in a good long while. I'm not a Megaman fan to start with, but holy crap.

Alpha footage is always dangerous to look at, I have no idea what to expect. The music is cool, though. I'm used to hearing orchestral or metal remixes of that old mega man music, but I'm not sure if that would fit in an actual release. Whatever sounds they are using fit pretty well.

This needs more static screens and pixel art. Actually, um, maybe just give me Mega Man 9 +10 on PC.

@loktarogar: I dunno, that dash-absorb mechanic seems really interesting from a gameplay perspective, especially since it seems that if you miss their incapacitated window, they regenerate. Combine that with the combo system and what we've been told but not yet seen in action of 9's transformative abilities and enemy weapon stealing power (not just bosses, but mid-stage enemies, IIRC) and you have the building blocks for something really neat.

Plus it looks a lot like Megaman X, which is just great.

I'm still wondering how they can get away with making something that's so clearly just Mega Man. Did they get permission from Capcom or something?

Double the movement speed of everything on screen including Mega... uh, Boy himself and i'm interested. Sluggishness is a common issue with polygonal 2D platformers. Things must be fast and snappy for a good platformer or there had better be a damn good reason why not.

Hmm...I imagine they'll be fleshing out the enemy types and environmental art and all of that, so I'll withhold judgment on that. It is pre-alpha footage, so of course you always have to be cautious with opinions on this stuff.

I always wanted to see Mega Man go kind of a combo-attack route. It seemed like a way to mix up the gameplay.

Capcom has nothing to gain from suing or trying to stop Inafune & Comcept.

If Capcom were to sue, there's nothing they could do that wouldn't make them seem like complete monsters, because not only would they be going against Inafune who is highly regarded and who created a number of Capcom's most successful series (including MegaMan) but they'd be putting a stop to a project that people clearly want and something that Capcom has failed to deliver multiple times over, having canceled 4 different MegaMan projects in like a 2 year period.

Doing such a thing would be very shameful for a Japanese company to do, especially so publicly, and Inafune knew all that (plus everything else I stated above) going into the project. He put himself in a position where he can basically taunt Capcom knowing full well that they won't/wouldn't do anything about it.

It'd be like Blizzard suing Runic for Torchlight. The game is substantially different. It's not like CAPCOM has rights to every side-scrolling anime robot game.

I mean, now... not only is the game polygonal, but the lighting and effects don't even look half as good.

I wasn't expecting them to get to the level of quality shown in the concept art, but I was at least hoping for something approaching that.

Let's hope they still get there eventually.

Because it's not their IP. Plus, you can't sue people just for using the same ideas as you. If the game had the MegaMan name slapped onto it then they'd have a case, but you can't own concepts like "guy who jumps and shoots in a 2D sidescrolling fashion." If you could, there would barely be any video games coming out. Oh you want to make a first-person military shooter? That's too bad, Activision owns the rights to that concept. An open-world game where you steal cars? Suck it, Saint's Row, that shit belongs to Rockstar Games.

Things are moving at about the same speed as any of the megaman games, so I'm not seeing a problem.

Seems like some people are confusing the term "alpha" with "release". Most of the visual effects are not complete yet, this is just a video showing their progress, that's it.

Yeah, but still, I mean... I know it's alpha, but it looks VASTLY different from that concept art.
I guess I'm mostly bummed that it's not gonna be 2D.
A Mega Man-style game that had the visuals of something like Shank or Mark of the Ninja would have been really nice.

@astrophyle: Except in this case you not only looks, and seemingly plays like MM but a game that also has the exact same storyline. Note not similar, literally exact.

The storyline in both MM and Mighty No 9 is that there are two scientists who build a group of robots to benefit mankind. One of the scientists goes bad and changes the robots to be bad as well, except one robot who ends up remaining good and ends up having to battle his brothers. The good robot fights the bad bots in any order of the player's choosing and gains their power once defeating them. Specific powers work really well on specific bosses.

It's the same thing in every way with the exception of the names.

It's not like Blizzard and Runic because the two aren't even as remotely close as MM and MN9 are.

Inafune went out of his way to make MN9 as close to MM as possible because he knew Capcom wasn't going to do anything about it. A lot of what he is doing is basically giving Capcom the finger.

Can you really blame him, though? Just look at how Capcom has treated the franchise in recent years.
Capcom essentially gave Mega Man the finger, so Inafune's just like "well fine, if that's how you wanna play things, dawg"

Easier said than done man. The level of quality you're asking for is on par with something Pixar could deliver in a pre-rendered CGI film. The only way you could get visuals this good is in 3D, real time and the tech just ain't there this gen... maybe in 7 years when we're due for a refresh.

This is more of a spiritual successor than a clone, especially since the original creator is involved. Dark Souls isn't a clone of Demon's Souls is it?
