Maybe, but I'd say CoD has been more influential in defining the overall experience. Hence why this looks the way it does. Nice graphics and player numbers aside, one of the staples of the Battlefield series for me is the utterly sterile map design. It seems fairly symbolic that you're able to destroy it so easily :|

These previews seem so... mature! In a putting-aside-childish-things way. This seems like a mainstream title that's actually trying to be a respectful recreation of the modern warzone.

I would really be interested to play a war game that places realistic atmosphere and mood before rampant empowerment.

Honestly, if the whole game is scripted this well, I wouldn't see it as a bad thing. It adds a certain realism: in real combat situations, soldiers rely on operating as a team and observing chain of command. It's not RAMIREZ! GO NUTS FOR A WHILE AND I'LL CHECK IN WITH YOU LATER

"setting the trend rather than following it?"

(not trying to pick on this poster, just taking this as a general statement which illustrates the lackluster response this incredible effort from dice is getting)

Have all you guys harping on the 'copycat theory' forgotten how this shit started in the first place!?  The war between These two started back in the early 2000's.  Battlefield 1942 came out in late 2002 (sept) and blew everyone away.  The first Call of Duty game didn't arrive until one year later, Oct of 2003.  Now if you want to get picky, the two blokes who made Infinityward came from 2015 (I am 90% sure) and they launched Medal of Honor Allied Assault from that studio in Jan of 2002.  That was the first, and last MOH game I gave a damn about.  So those two gentlemen in particular have been in this little back and forth between the two development teams since all the way back then.  Neither team is ripping the other off, its called healthy competition.  And without either studio, one could argue that neither game would be as great as they are.

And if you want to talk about copying Modern Warfare models, Battlefield 2 came out in Early 2005.  When did Modern Warfare come out?  Oh, 2 + years later?  Dice has a history of setting trends, and so does Infinityward, or more accurately Vince and the other guy.
With that said, I don't think either game is trying to be the other.  Modern Warfare filled in all the gaps left by the much broader, much more wide-ranging and open combat model forged by the Battlefield franchise.  Then Dice comes back, having learned a thing or two about persistent character progression and dynamic story telling through the medium and make their game BETTER because of it.

Things I noticed from this video that have got me excited about this game are the graphics of course, but really I like the very self serious tone they are setting.  There isn't a ton of "oscar mike!" and "60 mike mike inbound" and all that nonsense.  We'll probably be getting some  of that in the full length game, but I appreciate the very serious and 'down to business' approach in the writing.  I also like the more realistic look at the military tactics of a small squad of specialists.  The way they stack up at corners, and touch or give verbals when they leave cover.  This is shit I WISH my buddies would do when we play MW or BF together now...communication is KEY.  I also liked the general attention to detail in the world.  Everything looks very real, very serious.  I think it reminds me of Black Hawk Down in the best possible way.  Not duplicated that movies action, cause ultimately that's not what we identify with.  It has the potential to just let you see, let you experience the very, incomprehensibly heavy act of pulling that trigger.  Taking lives is not funny, its not easy and it takes its toll on real humans, but when the chips are down, you want to survive.  This looks like a story of survival to me, and that has me pumped.

So who wins the modern warfare battle?

We win guys.  We do.

A quiet singleplayer moment. How quaint.

Can I haz multiplayer footage with vehicles and explosions and largescale destruction on a nighttime metropolitan map now - please? Pretty please? Enough with the singleplayer footage already.

I'd really like to wreck havoc on Paris, France. It's in the game. Let me see that!

The battlefield franchise is less about that kind of action. I hope the next teaser/trailer shows off what I am talking about.

Really interested in the particulars about the suppression mechanic. Everytime a bullet whizzes by or hits the cover, there's some kind of visiual effect going on. Wonder if there's more to it and if it applies for multiplayer too.

If yes - I'm really looking forward to suppressing camping snipers with an LMG. That's gonna be sweet.

I don't get all the hate for military lingo, the phonetic alphabet is much more used in modern warfare than silent room clearing tactics, and is therefore more representative of real warfare than the tapping on shoulders, silent movement thing.
Also, specialist is an army rank, this game follows marines.
Also also, pulling a trigger is quite easy actually, and the recoil of anything firing 556 is quite soft, so no theres no punch... Unless you're on the receiving end.
But otherwise i agree completely

It's not the Terminator theme. It's the Battlefield theme heavily distorted.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vg0Tmydj29M "
I don't care what anyone says, the whole marketing campaign has been Terminator themed. From the whole bass line to the blue themed visuals and videos. It's terminator, not so much an "original" theme remixed. The whole style is terminator, until you get to the actual gameplay footage. "
why is it Terminator themed?  There's no terminators or futuristic combat going on lol, the only reason you guys got that idea is because you didn't recognize the old Battlefield theme music.

Anyway, I can't wait for multiplayer, but damn the singleplayer looks generic as hell.

That would be really cool. I hope that's what is going on.  I'm going to have to go back and look at that again more closely.

anyway, I want to see bigass multiplayer maps, big teams, and vehicles!!  time to put all doubts to rest about whether this is a real Battlefield game or not.

That sniper's got to be the worst sniper ever. He's using a .50 cal and he can't hit guys who are sitting on the other side of about 5 inches of concrete? He might as well be shooting at plywood for all the "cover" the good guys have at the end.

Keep your campaign stuff, not interested.  Played through BC2's single player content and its just not an experience I would buy a game for.  The multiplayer is the the nugget.

Demo ran on 580 GTX single card. Any decent DX11 card will run it looking good. DICE is using a new way of rendering things enabled through DX11, thus they've dropped DX9 support.

I'm no tech whizz, but it's about dropping 'Forward Rendering' in favor of 'Deferred Rendering'. I can't tell you the first thing about either of the two, other than 'Forward Rendering' is old-school and 'Deferred Rendering' is new school. While many modern games, such as Dead Space 2 use 'Deferred Shading' for effects and stuff, Battlefield 3 is gonna be the first game, which does everything with 'Deferred Shading', thus it's now called 'Deferred Rendering'.

I'm a layman and I have but the faintest idea what this means. The promise of it though I understand. Way more graphics for the same cost. Next generation engine for current generation hardware, as is DICE's slogan for its Frostbite 2.0 engine.

How well that promise will translate into reality on both PC and consoles remains to be seen. I for one am confident that Frostbite 2 will perform outstandingly.

Its meant to be for the trailer, true it looks a but to scripted but this could be a very tense moment on a  level. They cut out the crawling bit which is a bit of gameplay haha.

That's pretty ridiculous that one rocket launcher shot just leveled an entire building. I had to chuckle at the whole "You're the best shot!" line when the player kind of just stood up and fired randomly, decimating the wholes structure somehow.

But who am I to hate on greatness. This game looks very good, and is getting hyped up enough to compete with Call of Duty. "Compete" in the same way MMO's try to compete with WOW, but still, compete none the less!

Looks awesome!  But I am one to nit-pick so how come the two lead Marines don't have any sort of rear sight aperture or their rifles, from what I can see? Anyone?
