One Piece: Pirate Warriors 2 Continues Franchise Tradition of Being Bonkers

Everything I've seen of One Piece (which isn't much) with her is always her in a bikini top and jeans so... I guess it's.. accurate?

Never really gotten much into one piece because of the character design; but, this game looks promising. I may pick it up. I know it plays like Dynasty Warriors with better animation and storyline. So, that's a plus for me.

Yes, the anime has women who have breasts, and some of them wear bikini tops. Moreso lately, in the beginning that character in particular dressed more modestly. And had much smaller breasts.

I really hope they cut out all the awful platforming sequences and replaced them with lots of different playable characters. The fun of these games is getting to unleash everyone's crazy powers on many dudes at once, until the framerate starts to stutter. And thankfully, post timeskip, the Straw Hat crew's powers are way, way crazier.

That whole "anti-friendship machine" thing is made up for the game, right?

@originalgman:Yeah it's made up for the game. Since they covered most of the main story in the first game I guess they're doing an alternate story line for new material.

@gokaired:It is kind of crazy, even more so than they show in this trailer. I always felt like some aspects of Gokaiger were kind of inspired by One Piece a bit.

I remember reading One Piece in Shonen Jump as a kid and really enjoying it a lot. I tried the anime however and it just didn't click with me. There's so many dam episodes in that series that the idea of trying to catch up terrifies me of the time commitment needed as well. Plus I just can't seem to get into Anime that is not dubbed these days and the dub of this is terrible. Though I love the dubbed intro. It's a catchy tune.

Well you see, they're all friends and they're also pirates, so it steals their friendships and friend ships.

How many voice actors are there in Japan, at least two of those voice actors were in Asura's Wrath.

@crusader8463: I enjoy that dubbed opening because I love cheesy rap, but that is the ONLY good thing about the 4Kids dub of One Piece. The rest of it is censored and cut up the wahzoo, everyone hated it and 4Kids eventually dropped it. You should try watching the new, uncut Funimation dub. It doesn't have rap, but it keeps everything whole and accurate to the original. And most of it is available on Hulu for free. It's how I got into One Piece a few years ago, though I eventually switched over to subbed.

I still haven't caught up to the current story arc, but that's ok. I just watch a few episodes at a time when I've got nothing else going on, and it's perfect for that. Don't let the episode count intimidate you, it's totally worth it.

First thought - none of these characters are dressed for the Cold.

Second thought - the "power to steal friendship"? Really? That's the ultimate weapon?

At the end of the day, these types of games are just cheap cash-ins, right? I don't know anything about One-Piece, but aren't these games Japan's equivalent to Movie-licensed tie-ins from the West?

It wasn't so bad until the author married a literal supermodel who was cosplaying as that orange-haired character when he met her.

Now a ton of the female characters have "Nami-face", where they look like clones of that girl. Still not as much fanservice as most series though!

The manga is the best-selling book series in Japanese history. Something like 40% of the entire population reads it. To say it's bigger than DBZ or anything else is an understatement.

Yeah, the plot in One Piece is way better than this, this is just silly non-canonical nonsense. Same for most of the movies and such.

Also, the cold thing gets handled fairly early on, by a samurai who ate a devil fruit that grants him the ability to disguise anyone he wants with any sort of clothing. He uses this skill to give everyone winter clothing.

For everyone wondering I'd like to confirm that One Piece is pretty good. Great characters, rich world building, and insane abilities that most people would never think of.

Hey look, another Japanese game where all of the women have ridiculous anti-gravity grapefruit tits, as though they were thought-up by a 15-year old boy in the heart of puberty.

And why do they always seem to coquettishly wink at the "camera", etc.?

the design does take time to get used to but when i got past it i watched the first 160 episodes or so in about a week. I don't like anime.

I would suggest to not get these games unless your familiar with the series though. I think it does just enough things different with the DW formula by adding platform elements and stuff but is definitley still a fan game. some of the boss fights are frustrating which i hope they improved on.

All the One Piece hate is disappointing. I completely understand why though. One reason I don't watch 99% of anime is because of the overwhelming sexual overtones and themes. They all devolve into, SEE this GIRL, SHE has TITS! Aghghghghgh SEEEXXXXX.

I understand why you wouldn't like this anime because of longwinded exposition, disinterest in the setting or aesthetic, or because you don't have the time to watch 500+ episodes of a show since you have better things to do with your time.

I would like to be clear though, having watched over half of the show, compared to most anime, this show has an astonishingly little amount of sexual content or themes. Later on in the series there was a gap where the characters parted ways for several years. For some reason, the animators felt compelled to radically change some of the characters designs. Some of them look fine, but some look arguably worse. Nami, the girl in the screen cap for the trailer, grew balloon tits during this time gap.

Unlike the examples I'm sure a lot of you go to from other anime, one piece's female characters are not entirely defined by sex. In fact, the two main female characters are wonderfully fleshed out and have a strong independent female presence.

Whoa, I don't know why I felt compelled to explain what I did. Just ignore me, I'm just another random person on the internet trying to defend something I like. Honestly, I'm not even that interested in the game. Oh well, Video Games ya'll.

One Piece, to me, is about what the protagonist and his team's goal is: To get him to become the king of all pirates. And how they go about that is through strong bond they have with each other, always relying on your friends for your shortcoming knowing that they'll have your back.

The overall tone for the anime for me is this fuzzy warmness you get when you're surrounded with just the best group of friends and do what you love best, despite the superficial claims of boobs and sexual innuendos that gets mixed at it. Granted, that's how the Japanese culture is: they're not ashamed about sexual themes if it's done in a cheeky manner. It's just for shits and giggles.

I always loved how the protagonist have this strong sense of vision of what he wants, and who he wants to be. And he has a good eye on who's going to be part of his crew (which I learnt and used this lesson my whole life!). With his strong persona, he, of course, attracts greater antagonists. But those antagonists aren't without their quirks. And that's what makes the whole series great for me, too. It's the hyperbolic characterisations of people.

Edit: The game's probably going to be like Dynasty Warriors, and I'm okay with that. I'll probably get it if it holds up to my expectations.

Whenever I see something from One Piece I keep thinking about Xoxak's review of Gunbird 2... Because Nami's got big hooters!

@ravelle: If you like 'musou' (dynasty warriors) type games, then I'm sure it will be fine. Out of all the musou games that Tecmo Koei makes, this series seems to be the most polished and stylish. That trailer was put really well together for fans of the series.

@heavyduty32: Friendship is the American translation of the word "Nakama" which is a huge word in the series, it's probably in quotes because they say it a lot and it has a special meaning other than just that they're friends.

I tend to think the same thing every now and then, Alex. It's so much easier to just revel in my loneliness and beat myself up over it than actually do something. But you need to remind yourself of how hurtful it is to the people that actually care about you, if you think like that.

Nakama means comrade, that's it. They literally have the same definition, it's not some mystical undefinable word from Glorious Nippon that has no true meaning in English, it's just a retarded holdover from translation groups.

Everyone should read the One Piece manga. Stay away from the anime though, the quality has greatly declined in the last few years.

The art style looks really cool -- way over the top in a crazy way. Wish it was the sort of game I had any interest in playing :-\
