That cryptic "database corrupted" error would freak me the fuck out. That, the corrupted save files, the crashing, etc. makes me happy I'm not bothering with next-gen stuff for a while.

I find it interesting in NBA how the framerate drops on player closeups but seems silky smooth displaying the full court.

I'm guessing they're doing something where the level of detail on an individual model drops when the camera is further away. Switching to a higher-poly mesh on close-up, or maybe just switching to a higher-res texture. Just throwin' ideas out there.

@drewbert I remember noticing that real-time cross-fades in games required one scene to freeze in order to maintain performance in Dead or Alive 2 on the Dreamcast! Back then I thought the same; when we get more powerful consoles, they'll be able to cross-fade without freezing one scene!

I have since learned that this would be a very difficult problem to solve. Imagine the extra power you would need to render 2 different camera views on 2 different screens, that's what you'd need to be able to achieve a smooth cross-fade. In other words, you'd need a render headroom approximately equal to the target framerate. However, you'd probably much prefer to put that extra power toward making the rest of the game look better, rather than always account for the possibility of rendering 2 viewports at the same time.

Another work around would be to essentially reduce the render quality by half when you do the cross-fade, but this would almost certainly be more jarring than the still-frame cross-fade.

So I suppose it is true that we could now render a game at the quality of the Dreamcast, and maintain framerate and motion on both views, but then we'd just be looking at Dreamcast quality games again.

Does the response "sure" seem rude to anyone else?

I think I've seen it elsewhere (Brad uses "suuuuuuure" on the bombcast sometimes), but the crew tends to say it dismissively even when they seem to agree.

I don't know, just seems like there are tons of ways to acknowledge someones statement, and "sure" seems....rude.

I had a teacher in middle school who used "sure" all of the time. She was a really nice teacher, very inclusive and everyone liked her, but sometimes she felt a bit cold because of it. She'd do the thing where she'd start a sentence, and then pick someone to finish it, and if it was right, she'd say "sure!" and continue along. Whenever it was me, I always felt as if I fucked up and she was just going with it to avoid the awkwardness of correcting me.

So yeah, I agree with you. But it doesn't bother me with these guys.

I say it all the time. Doesn't sound rude to me.

That NBA "Ecstasy of Gold" remix intro was terrrrrible.

I didn't hate it, but it was certainly inferior to the regular version of Ecstasy of Gold.

But then, if a good song is sampled in a remix, the original song sounds way better than a dumb remix that just adds a basic drum kit on top of the song.

Just catching up on this now, and got to the part where you're talking about the limited audio output options compared to the PS3.

If you set Optical to LPCM, you will only get stereo audio through that, so that's probably the easiest way to force high quality stereo out of the system.

Optical will only do multichannel in coded formats. (Dolby/DTS)

I know a number of people that are having problems with channel support being misidentified over HDMI, so I'm sure this is something Sony will fix via a firmware update.

EDIT: Apparently when you do this, it actually forces stereo audio over HDMI as well. I don't have a PS4 to test it though.
