Never played bit trip before. This seems like a good way to do it.

EDIT: Until I saw it was for the 3DS. Nevermind!

EDIT 2: Is the pause sound from Ocarina of Time?

Ninja quick look incoming!

Posted by VIGGO123

Damn, so close. I've played bit trip beat, and enjoyed that, but haven't tried any of the other ones.

I'm just happy to be on the first page. This game looks bizarre.

Posted by 49th

Wow, I can imagine in 3D it would be a total cluster fuck.

Posted by Larsa

I love Runner, but the last levels are pretty rough.

Posted by mnzy

I got a few of the Bit Trip games on Steam and I think they almost all have a problem with pace.

In Runner and Beat, you do very easy stuff, sometimes for 10 minutes (Beat). And after training you to play this level of difficulty they get hard at the end. If you mess up now, it's time to start over. And you know you are going to have to do the same easy stuff for 80% of the level or 10 minutes again until you get to the interesting part.

In Runner the time periods are usually shorter, but since alot of the games fun is the increase of pace in sound and stuff going on graphically and all that resets, it feels even worse.

They really should think about if doing it like that is the best they can do, esepcially after playing Super Meat Boy it felt terrible.

And that's very bad since the rest of their games is actually really good.

@Melvargh: theres a wii version of this collection and 2 of the games are really cheap on steam if you really want them

edit: you don't need to jump onto the springs in runner Patrick, you can run over them and still launch

Maybe I am weird, but Void looks great to me.

you don't have to jump onto the pink tiles Patrick ya doof

Posted by Whiskeyjack

I'm glad to see Patrick doing the same thing I did in Runner a lot - jumping over the spring pads. Every other piece of the environment you generally want to avoid. I can't recall the number of times I jumped over a spring pad to my death, and ended up having to repeat to myself "don't jump. don't jump".

I have never played these games before but i want to now!

and as for the bit.trip shooter it seems its only problem was the fact that the shots didnt connect satisfyingly to the enemies. that could have redeemed the whole game if it had a satisfying "crunch" to it.

Somehow never played these games (guess being on wiiware didn't help) but totally going to trade in star fox when done with it to get this game

Edited by atomic_dumpling

Too bad Bit.Trip Beat gives me a nasty, muffled headache every time a play it, maybe it is the combination of high concentration level and eye-gouging graphics.

Sounds more like Super Mario 64 to me.

Well, I went to check it out and I guess I was wrong. Sounds nothing like Mario pause.

Yep. No jumping required on the springs. I don't know how it's possible to complete the game while trying that. You'd probably be playing forever.

Really digging the weekend quick looks, thanks guys!

I quite enjoy these Patrick/Ryan quick looks, keep them coming!

Posted by Jimbo_N

Tip! You don't have to jump onto the springs in Bit Trip Runner. Just run over them and press up!

What, really? Flux is the same game as Beat but literally just mirrored? Iamnotokaywiththis

Posted by TinyGrenade

Hearing Patrick mention Anamanaguchi made my day.

Posted by Hamst3r

I'm pretty sure Bit.Trip.Fate sucks on purpose, it's the linear shooter. The whole series comes across like a statement about gaming getting boring and retro revivals saving it from the shooter.

Man, I love Commander Video's slide in Runner. Must end every level by sliding! Much like the whole Mega Man jump through a door thingy.

"The circle pad is too sensitive."

Hold right, then swing up/down while still holding right. It's like sometimes in a driving game you hold up so you've got more subtle analog control. Don't know why anyone would play that way if they can just touch the screen, though.

Thank you giantbomb for having game related ads and not freaking mascara ads. (I'm looking at you, joystiq.)

No. Different patterns and challenges. Checkpoints, and more layers of modes added.

Is that minusbaby playing in the intro to bit trip Fate?

Edit: Great Quick Look! Runner makes me want this game a lot more.

Posted by lordofultima

I think Void is the best game, behind Runner maybe. Void is just a chillaxin' experience unlike his frantic brethren.

Edited by steevl

I was hooked by this series when I got Bit.Trip Beat on WiiWare and bought each game as it came out. I might just pick up the Bit.Trip Complete collection for the Wii since I don't have a 3DS.

Also, yeah, you don't have to jump onto those spring pads in Runner - you can just push up to use it. You can even hold up and it'll work, but if you do that you might miss out on some gold that's placed in a way so that it can only be reached by tapping up a little later.

Posted by falling_fast

the steam version of bit trip runner also lags terribly

Edited by Pop

you don't have to jump on the trampoline you just hold up. In bit.trip runner

How does Patrick have time to work?! :P

Funny, I find most of the music, especially in the early games to be too simplistic and generally awful. The almost random noises you make when you're playing the game right don't help either. And I usually really like chiptunes, too.

Posted by FoxMulder

I don't get the appeal at all...each just seems like a boring iteration of one core game...oh well

A bad game is still bad even if it's bad on purpose. That's not a viable argument to use to defend the game.

Runner is genuinely very fun, it's the only one I played though.

There's a Wii version as well called Bit.Trip: Complete.

Complete is out on the Wii and seems to be a better collection.

Calling FATE and VOID low points is crazy to me. I love those two! I've not tried Flux because I knew something like this was coming.

Complete seems like a great buy.

Posted by Hamst3r

@xMrSunshine: I'm not defending it. I'm simply pointing out what I think the developer means for it to represent.

Posted by jd18b

Aside from Zelda, I think I may have found a game to actually buy for my 3DS......

Posted by PerfidiousSinn

I like Runner, but I have trouble playing the rest for an extended period of time.

Posted by Dodongo

These games are like modern re-imaginings of Game & Watch concept.

Fate is still actually a really good game, a lot slower and more methodical than the others, yes, but still really fun, the music is awesome too.

Yeah, just press Up when you walk across it.

Posted by Thor_Molecules

I can't say i'd ever pay 40$ for this, the only game I enjoyed was Bit.trip Runner.

Posted by WhiteBrightKnight

lol patrick you don't have to jump on the springs in runner, otherwise the game would be impossible you just have to press up.

I already own all these games so no real reason for me to pick this up, but they're all great and I strongly recommend it to anyone who hasn't played them.

That "MEGA" on the bottom screen really needs to be a gif
