I knew that behind-the-door-monster was going to be there, but I still jumped.

Oh ya, I've been waiting for these guys to do a quick look of this

Seems like a decent slow paced survival game, might check it out.

what are these problems people are speaking of tho?

Crashing, I've just had random crashes, not game stopping crashes yet.  Some saving game bugs (there's a part where I saved and an important item didn't appear when I loaded back).  Crappy performance even on high end hardware (overall the FPS fluctuates around 20FPS on my fairly high end PC and it does drop lower, obviously an ATI card isn't going to give you the cool graphical effects, and I get tons of display lag).  The pacing can be really bad (there are many places where trudging from point to point is your only task, and it takes far too long).

Most of the gameplay is just hitting a switch in some place and walking to another place, hitting another switch, fighting an enemy, moving on...  The combat is really poor...

I don't even particularly like the graphics overall, the water effects are cool, but it's the first game in a long time where I saw 2D geometry representing objects.

Basically the main draw to the game is either the water effects or the unique mechanic of going back in time, taking over peoples' bodies, and saving their lives.

its a PPsH not a tommy gun guys >.>

This QuickLook is way behind schedule, its seriously one of the best games I've ever played, I was sucked in from beginning to end. Anyone looking for a different game with a great story and atmosphere should def look into this. The parallel story about Danko is simply brilliant and beautiful.^^

Yuck. The gun movement is too snappy.

Oh well I think I'd like it more than Bioshock.

AGH, I'm highly intrigued yet I know I won't be able to play it. >_<

I can't really recommend this game. It is so buggy. I've got a high end computer and was barely passing 25fps in some areas. The game doesn't support multiple cores, and they aren't going to patch it. Don't bother with this game if you have an ATI card.

Gameplay is unbelievably slow. Forget about running. Reloading is laughably slow. You have all these enemies coming at you and it seriously looks like your casually loading a rifle for a duck hunt.

I think it was level 12 when I noticed I was in the crouch position. Tried to get out of it, didn't work. Started walking forward. Well, turns out I wasn't crouching, I was sinking through the floor. Now the screen is white and there is box above me where I guess I should be. Tried walking back to the box. Went through it. Reloaded the level. Walking through walls, ceilings, floors. This went on for a good 3/4 of the level.

Story is ok, but hardly worth the frustration you'll get from the gameplay itself.

oh man. i would love it if this came to consoles (since i highly doubt my pc could take it, and my good computer is a mac) but i doubt that will happen. it looks like my kind of game, though. atmospheric and unique.

  • This game makes me feel cold like no other game before - reason enough to like it.

  • I thought they did this QL months ago. They talked about it on the Bombcast.

  • It runs fine on a ATI card (you have no (NVidia) PhysX support, unless you have a PhysX card).

The main difference between Eastern European games and Western development IMHO: post-CCCP games don't take you by the hand and guide you through every step you make. They assume you are mature and curious enough to explore and forgive the weaknesses for the overall experience you get.

Part of it, due to the fact, that Eastern game developers don't have big publishers in their back, providing them with the hordes of Q&A testers and other comforts to make sure a certain 'product quality' and/or 'target audience' is reached. No 'polished', 'bug-free' products is the result.

Western FPS games - especially console mainstream titles - explain everything to you, like you really are the 5 year old toddler they assume you are. If the western FPS does not have arrows on the floor to tell you where to go next, you miss them.

There's is absolutely nothing wrong with CoD, MoH, Batman etc ... great games. But the linear single player experience is very narrow. Don't ever leave the invisible arrow in Modern Warfare 2 - you'll end up very quickly at the invisible wall.

The game is extremely demanding with PhysX fully enabled.  Way more demanding than Crysis.  I haven't ever tried running it without PhysX because the water effects are pretty core to the technical side of the experience... "

the water effects look as pretty with no PhysX card - the Shader Model is the same. ATI cards do the same trick. What you don't get are some more detailed ice-breaking debris. The funny thing is, on NVidia cards PhysX turned off, the game runs faster.

Looks fascinating, but Russian.

Haha, the rolling zombie guy thing was hilarious. Awesome quick look!

I've been intrigued by this since Dave first started talking about it. Pity my PC can't play it though. May still pick it up sometime in hopes of one day upgrading.

Duders, I actually got scared when those dudes popped out. ROFL.

You won't have the flowing water droplets without PhysX / Nvidia, I believe.  Still will get the wall ice/water shaders, but that part isn't so impressive IMO.  The ice breaking isn't so great either.

I have no doubt the game is faster with PhysX turned off, because many of the details will be turned off as well.  Same with Mirror's Edge.

I always wondered why my single core P4 ran Eastern European games so well, STALKER and The Witcher run great on my old rig.
Min details?  STALKER ran like shit on my old P4... "
Everything on high. It's a P4 3.2ghz, plus an XFX 7900 GT/GTO. I'm thinking it could go a few more rounds with a new graphics card as my 7900 only has 256MB of ram. "
I sincerely doubt that as my 7800GT with Core2Duo e6400 couldn't always get the smoothest framerates in that game, nor could Intel 820D with the 7800GT for that matter and my older P4 overclocked to 3.4ghz certainly never delivered smooth gameplay in STALKER with the DX9 lighting enabled.

Did you go to the ADVANCED menu settings and turn them all up?  I'm betting your view distance was middling and you were running using the DX8.1 lighting setup - which is what STALKER defaults to on p4 based systems.  The DX8.1 lighting model is a lot less demanding and flies like the proverbial off the shovel.

Also, your p4 system is far too slow for most modern games from HL2 : Episode 2 onwards - most of which are multi-core enabled.

If this game had been made by the guys who made Condemned it would be the most awesome game ever.
Now it just looks tedious.

Posted by wwfundertaker

Rolling Zombie, hahahah. Looks ok, but the requirements are to high for me.

I watched my friend play this and it looked pretty crazyyy.

Just finished downloading it off steam not long ago. It seems quite fun thus far and the game is simply beautiful. I really makes you feel like you're freezing.

If I tried to play this on my machine, it would be absolutely freezing.

Is the jerky gun movement intentional? The crew talked about it like it was an animation problem or something, but I just thought it was the dude is cold and he's shivering as he moves....

I got this game free with my EVGA GeForce GTX 260 Core 216 last week and it's awesome! The only problem I have with the speed is in the beginning when you have to go from point A to B. I ate my Hero before I got to the end.... O_o

BTW: The code to get it for free was in my profile on evga.com. I don't know what you need to qualify but check it.

this game looks amesome-tastic. didnt even know it existed. i'm glad Ryan didn't review it jeez, that guy hates everything in the world. even babies.
love a game with a slow pace because its like real life. if i was in that situation in real life there's no way i would be runnin and Rambo-in my way through the ship. its gotta have good atmosphere though like this one and Demon Souls and Bioshock and Dead Space.

Posted by Kohe321

I agree with Dave, the snow effects are awesome.

Posted by pornstorestiffi

I guess if there is such a thing as "open world jank" this would be "first person jank". Game looks really boring and the walking speed would just kill me.

Posted by Stargate174

When that guy rolled I busted out laughing...lol. Seems like a dull game but could be good.

Posted by SBYM

So slow; no thank you.

Posted by viklanderviking

I cant be the only one who fucking jumped at 11:30...anyway, this game looks really interesting. Too bad some members of the giantbomb staff have even less patience then me. ;)

Ukraine is game to you?!

Posted by gbrading

I saw this in a store today, and wasn't shore what to make of it. I'm getting a strong S.T.A.L.K.E.R. vibe, presumably because both were developed in the Ukraine, and because they are both unforgiving games.
Posted by Spiritof

I wasn't really that interested until the zombie roll. Now, I crave it.
