i cant wait for this one thanks for the QL

There's something very odd about the movement of the main character. I can't really describe it, but part of it has to do with the jumping, it seems like he's being propelled forward rather than jumping forward. I dunno.

Edit: Jittery. Yeah as others have said, the movement doesn't look very fluid. Transitions between animations are also off, seems like there's a noticeable split second between when you're character stops moving, and starts jumping.

yeah
also when he jumps from platform to platform, it seems like he is getting pushed and not actually jumping from forward momentum etc...

Its not idle fact, it cold hard speculation.

 Tripitaka, the original faux-trap

@Grissefar:  No but they don't have to show an intentionally simple tutorial sequence either, I feel like they should have spent more time with it.

What's with the cynicism on Giantbomb nowadays.

Brad died. What's the chances.

Wow...this game looks pretty bad.

I know it's not the final version, but it looks like it has a lot of issues. It's pretty rough visually, and the animations look pretty awkward. The combat appears to be pretty shallow and janky. Also, the way the game is split up into small segments looks like it could really kill the pacing.

Really got curious after hearing about this game on this week's Bombcast. Seems neat, though I can already tell it'll be one of those games where it's mechanics will get in the way in some parts.

There's a demo available?! *boots up PS3*

Posted by Catolf

I'll be getting it, not on release because I got bills to pay but at the end of the month when I pick up fable 3 for my sister. I enjoyed the demo and love the look of Monkey and  Trip, so, if you don't pick this up, then fine, but I do think it will be the most underrated game of the fall.. too bad.

Posted by JoshS

They might love their character animations, but they need to learn to love their animation transitions. Watching a character seemingly teleport up or down every single time they grab a ledge is jarring. No longer looking forward to this.

bleh,  looks like an escort game.  As soon as I saw you had to throw her over the gap, and then right away she actually starts to slip like a retard and you have to go press a button to pull her up, I lost all interest in playing.

Was there a lot of textures and assets popping in, or rendering slow?  What the hell's going on there?

Posted by Sunspots

Dl'n the demo off of PSN right now. thanks GB for being awesome.

That's Unreal Engine 3 for you, son!

"p.s. I do presume the US did get the dubbed Monkey on the TV like the UK.  Of course the guys could have mentioned this connection already in the Quick Look.  I've just not watched it yet. "

I don't think the Americans got it. It was popular in the UK, but it was huge here in Australia and NZ. Growing up, I loved Monkey Magic.

Don't know why, but I'm really hating on this game. I'm fine with other adaptions of Journey to the West like the Stephen Chow movies, Dragonball and whatever, but something about this particular interpretation really gets my goat.

This reminds me Prince of Persia (the one from 08 or 09) Looks to bleh to care about. Seams like more yang and less bang.

It's clever however that Monkey is that dudes name and that Belt thing in the back looks like a tail when he's running. The chick for some reason reminds me of the Heavenly Sword chick... just with proper clothes.

Yea...so no.

They sounded a little melancholy in this quick look.
I hope that doesn't mean the game is bad!

I dunno why but this game really resonated with me. Can't wait for its release in a couple weeks. This and Vanquish should make October a great month!

@JYoung:  Brad dies? Everything I've ever known has been turned on its head!

said it before, sy it again, potential to be the next jak and daxter.

So this is the new Dragonball game, right?

Ugh.  I think I'll take a pass.

Jeff: "Now you have a machine gun."
Was that a Die Hard reference, Jeff? Maybe I just want to watch Die Hard...

I'm far more interested in the look and the story of this game than actually playing it.  Probably would've been a cool movie.

So now we know why Capcom picked Ninja Theory to make the next Devil May Cry.

Beause they're fucking insane.
Posted by Wonloong
@jakob187:  Agreed. The gameplay mechanics feels monotonous. Though this is still in development. Time will tell.
Posted by Spoonman671

I enjoyed the demo.  Has a sort of Uncharted 2 meets God of War feel to it, but it isn't as polished as either of those games.

Posted by Chaser324
@Curufinwe:
Yeah. We may not really know much about the next Devil May Cry, and I'm not ready to fully dismiss it...but...

Unreal engine does not lend itself nicely to this game. I had to restart the video to make sure I had checked HD before playing it. I also played the demo and everything looks so grainy and not smooth at all.

This game totally connected with me, I really enjoyed the demo...except for a few frame-rate hiccups? But besides that, the story, setting, characters and animations looked super engaging. And I thought the game-play was absolutely fine...wait for the review I guess, but definitely keeping a solid eye on this one.

Posted by Blackmoore

I kinda get a Prince of Persia vibe from this with the whole scene to scene combat puzzle and the camera pan showing you your destination.

I can't believe half you people trashing this game, go play the demo it's absolutely stunning!

Then go back to trolling COD lobbies....yawn

Just played through the demo. I gotta say, it's surprisingly good! Really had no idea what to expect from this game, but it engaged me in a satisfying manner.

Of course, Enslaved is based upon the ancient Chinese novel/fable/epic "Journey to the West." Which was about some sort of Monkey King and his companions on a... journey to the West. Now, the player plays a guy who has giant hands and some sort of banner on his waist, which kinda looks like a tail. That's about as much of a Monkey King as you get. Oh, and there's this hot girl. I don't remember there being a hot redheaded girl in the Chinese tale. But uh, she's here and she is really nice to look at, so whatever. I liked the inclusion. Having an attractive female companion actually does make me more likely to buy a game. Maybe that's kinda sad, I dunno...

Looking at the presentation and overall universe for the game, it really gives off a mythological futuristic techno vibe, very much like Too Human. This is a big warning sign to anyone who has played Too Human, which turned out to be a horrible mess of a game. I couldn't finish it. But Enslaved feels better, has actual camera control most of the time, and a bit more colorful art direction. There aren't gonna be any complaints about gray-brown environments here, this is an Unreal Engine game that actually features really lush and colorful levels, even if they do have a lot of mechanical technology as their foundation.

Does anyone else feel like Monkey's voice actor was trying for a bit of a Bruce Willis tone in his delivery? I really got that and it helped overcome the fact that he's generally a huge brute of a character who grunts and talks about killing a bunch, kinda like a platforming Marcus Fenix.

Platforming felt just like Prince of Persia, where you really won't ever fall to your death from mistiming a button press. It feels very automatic and smooth. Now, I've never played any God of War game, so action game combat isn't something I'm well qualified to judge, but it seemed to work really well here. There's an AOE attack to sweep multiple assailants away, light and heavy attacks per usual, and a nice charged stun that looks really cool. Monkey's main weapon appears to be a double bladed lightsaber. I usually blocked with the shield until the enemy robot attacked twice, then did a light-heavy-heavy combo to kill them. Even when put up against three robots at once, it never ever felt like you were overwhelmed. They give you all the tools you need to succeed here, namely the AOE sweep. It does no damage, but creates a lot of breathing room.

Perhaps I'm easily impressed, but the platforming sections on the outside of the prison ship, where you hopping from wing to wing, those parts just seemed very inspired and creative. You're running on these wings while the wind whips around you and you can really grasp the size of the ship and it all feels like a real place.

One question that came up was when you found the girl inside the escape pod. Did anyone else catch that her hair's actually black in there? Cause in the rest of the game, her hair is mindblowingly red. It is so red it almost burns itself into your retina. But for some reason, her hair looked completely black inside the pod.

The actual story for the game did not seem to reveal itself at all in the demo, from what I could grasp. I mean, there's little bits about prisoners having helmets plants on their heads that'll fry their brains if they disobey. And later, you get one placed on yourself, which sucks. You crash through the Statue of Liberty, which of course means this takes place in the future. So this is obviously going to be a very very loose interpretation of Journey to the West. I'm very interested in seeing how they flesh this world out and tie it into the ancient epic. They're really gonna have to explain just what the hell all of this is about. Why are Monkey's hands so big? Why is that girl's hair so red? Why are her boobs so big? Well actually, I think I know why her boobs are so big...

Anyone else impressed by the length of this demo? I was really not expecting to see so much content. Just think back to Arkham Asylum's demo, which consisted of one room. That was pathetic, right? Here, we traverse the entire length of this huge prison ship, inside and out. It's a good sign that they're confident enough to show off so much.

So yea... I guess I'll be buying this game. I dunno, they worked their magic on me. It could still turn out to be another Too Human, but if so they've done a terrific job of tricking people.

I'm interested to see how this game turns out. It seems like it has some really cool ideas but if the gameplay doesn't support it then I can't really see myself picking it up.

Posted by Yummylee

I really like the characters and the story's interesting. I'm not too thrilled to actually play through it, though.

@Delta_Ass:
I don't know if you already know and were joking, but the female in this game (Trip) is supposed to be Tripitaka; the male priest, who was played by a hot female in the Monkey TV series. I assume that's where Ninja Theory go the idea to make her a girl.
Edited by MrKlorox

This game looks like it controls jankily as fuck. I'm gonna pretend this doesn't exist. And honestly it might as well not.

Im liking how the game is turning out, but I wish Brad would stop using the phrase "Mind control". I don't want to sound like a nitpicky jerk, but there's not actually any of that happening...

I dunno, Brad, that was pretty life-changing. I'm having nightmares regularly now.

The chick looks too much like Nariko from Heavenly Sword don't ya think? I bet they re-used some assets on this "new" red head female protagonist.
