I'm going to predict the ending to this game: The Oswald that called Mickey into the TV is actually the sorceress. Minnie is safe at home. When Mickey "saves" one of the other toons from the levels he's actually imprisoning them for the sorceress.

DEFINITELY NOT A THWOMP.

loving the castle of illusion remixes in this game

The most impressive thing about this, is that it has the same sound effects as the genesis version...

Very pretty but mechanically...I dunno, not poor 'cause there is some depth there, but the depth was put in pointless places.

I dunno, I felt the same about Monster Tale which ended up being kind of a bummer. That game had a mega buster and all sorts of upgrades for it, but the way leveling worked you were encouraged to just always mash the melee attack a bunch, with it being stronger and the added range of the shots not being very useful. Cool ideas, mediocre execution.

more like septic mickey.

The fuck? Did this game go to the Little Big Planet school of shitty platforming? It's so slow and floaty.

Jeff's Scottish accent is 100% accurate.

they totally walked by goofy.

Little Nemo. Unlike Finding Nemo, this movie had quite a great game adaptation.

This looks like absolute shit. I thought from the screenshots early on it looked like a poor man's Kirby, but I didn't realize how slow, plodding, banal & fucking stupid it is. It's crazy how they put this out in stores, I can't imagine anyone having fun with it.

I'm really glad the people who were excited for this game were wrong, I called it being shit from the start.

I think it's funny that the part every games industry writer/journalist/whatever brings up about Mass Effect is punching reporters.

How fucking boring was this game? Good Lord.

Edited by Kosayn

It's good they had fun with that intro, but they had to... at least in the demo, none of it is skippable.

Sometimes I think the community parrots the same evaluation of a game too much, but in this case... the game just isn't at all attempting to be an interesting platformer, and all that drawing is there to disguise it by stopping the game every 30 seconds.

wow, those sound effects made me feel like a 10 year old playing Castle of illusion again

Aha! I was wondering why my fingers kept wanting to type "Little Nemo", thanks for the clear up.

DreamRift seems to be utterly incapable of understanding basic pacing and game flow. Their other game, Monster Tale is also a decent platformer which is really killed by horrible pacing (in that case needing to spend at least half the game backtracking through areas you've already been to).

Why not just use the touch screen as a map and have an 'outline' on the top screen where objects can be painted in and around objects which the thinner can be used on; Mickey already can shoot paint and thinner so it's not like it would be particularly difficult to implement as at most they would have to allow him to shoot up and down. I don't understand how they could have looked at their project and honestly thought it was a good idea to completely interrupt the action at least once per minute to paint in or thin out images, especially when yet another alternative would have been to simply let players tap on the icons on the touch screen a single time to fill in/remove items (assuming they really didn't want to let Mickey use his ranged attack in too many directions).

However, the absolute worst part of this is I get the impression that they know the painting mechanic isn't fun. Judging by this Quick Look, Mickey's movement speed is horribly slow unless he has some painting-based Super Meter. It's like they're saying "See? Now you want to interrupt play for this bland painting mechanic because moving at a decent speed is way more fun than moving slowly. Painting leads to fun after all, problem solved!"

I don't think anyone was really expecting this title to live up to the Genesis games and I would have been fine with an 'ok' platformer, but the painting mechanic just completely destroys the pacing - one of the most vital aspects of any game.

They had the exact same problem with Henry Hatsworth too, where the game becomes unfairly fucking impossible around World 4. At least there they had the excuse that EA wanted to get it out the door and they didn't have time to playtest it. I don't understand how they're still making the exact same mistakes their third game in.

As for your speed comment, Mickey's movement speed felt okay to me based on the demo (it's pretty much the normal walking speed in Castle of Illusion), but of course that doesn't fix the big issue that even if you excised the pacing-killing painting busywork, you'd be left with a game with a fuckton of boring dialogue and abjectly boring level design.

God that framerate. As a programmer, wtf is up with programmers these days!?

I'm sorry Jeff, but that's got to be the worst Scottish accent I've ever heard.

No. World is obviously the best and anyone who disagrees is an idiot.

Now for the more pressing question: Mickey or Donald?

Game seems cool and all, but the painting sucks. Just kills the pacing, why is this in here? Seems incredibly boring

Jeff and Vinny killing it. As usual.

This is a pretty good looking game, but that "draw the outline" and "erase the image" mini game are really bad. The Great Circus Mystery is my favorite 2D Mickey game.

Hell yes, always thought most people skipped that one. The suits in that game were an awesome expansion to the gameplay. This drawing crap is NOT.

40 dollars for this game after the demo seems to be pushing the boundaries of sanity and forthright thinking

the way the iconic characters are handled is stupid too they are just standing there and you talk to them then they disappear it doesn't feel very satisfying it's like...not satisfying and such

15 bucks maybe?

Posted by AndrewB

I think this game could turn out great later on, but I felt the same way about the paint mechanics ruining the game when I played the demo a couple of days ago. There's no way you can pass judgement on the quality of the game after barely getting through some tutorials, though.

Man, Vinny's Mickey voice is amazing!

Posted by YummyTreeSap

Not digging this. The platforming itself looks really boring and the paint stuff even worse. I've only played World of Illusion with a friend, and I enjoyed that well enough. Had some pretty nice music at times:

Mickey sounds an awful lot like Ghoul. Wait, is Ghoul owned by Disney?

Edited by bybeach

IDN...boring. I don't know audience or whatever, but towards the end just....

I liked the (unintended) tv ref's in the beginning and then it just slowly petered out. Maybe simply I am not the target. Mr.Scrooge is kind of the 1% we wants to do labels...he kind of is. Nice world ppl. don't care, but still....

Posted by MoonwalkSA

God I am such a sucker for Jeff and Vinny's Persona 4 references.

god, I love castle off illusion back in the day... hearing the old sound effects and remixes of its tunes really brings me back

that said, this game looks like shit

Posted by Jost1

I think it looks cool!

Posted by Tsuchikage

I love the graphics and the platforming looks solid, but the paint/thinner mechanics look really tedious and I've heard the game is really short.

Posted by LucidDreams117

Vinny Quick Looks are the best!

Posted by RoriP

Jeff: "I curse your beanstalk thinner."

I laughed out loud at that. This was the last place I'd expect a Thinner reference from.
