Been looking at this for awhile now on the e-shop... downloading the demo as we speak.

I don't have anything clever to say!

This game rules, I am currently quite addicted to it. Surprised to see a QL! Patrick is pretty good about playing games outside his wheelhouse, though, so good on him.

The music is great, as Patrick and Vinny both noted. Nice youtube playlist here.

Hooray! I'm on the fence about this game.

Wait, how many of everything? I applaud you for broadening your gaming experiences.

The things found on Ryans desk, always please.

Landsknecht is an old german word (of course) for mercenary. My two cents for today.

Etrian Ottersea.

That's all I've got, take it or leave it.

Huh. Didn't know that, thanks. I figured it wasn't just a completely nonsensical word :P

Love Vinny and his knowledge of Greek mythology

patrick you gave your fortress light armor.

Dark Tower!

What a stinker of an ending. Fun ride though.

I disagree, the character design overall is pretty adorable.

I almost feel like Kessler should be on this QL.

But those are days long gone by.

Man, I've been playing this game to death, and I'm really, really enjoying it. Ye Gods, though, I'm routinely punished for any overconfidence... by rats. Rats! Rats.

Got sucked into this series thanks to Kessler's QL of EOIII. Really enjoying EOIV. I feel like they did a lot to make the series more approachable.

Good to see Atlus keeping up it's proud tradition of basically naked adventurers and keeping a sizeable percentage of the classes locked until mid-late game where if you want to use them you'll need to spend 5-6 hours grinding them up to be in line with the rest of your party so that they could be at all useful. Because you know what was totally fun? Needing to kill frogs for like 6 hours when I unlocked the Hexer in Etrian Odyssey 1 because they withheld that class until like 12 hours in.

I really liked the first 2 games but they never fixed any of the things that they should have fixed to make this series not a complete grindfest.

Patrick could have totally taken that FOE. It would have been a real grind especially once his TP reserves ran low but I feel like he could have gotten that. It's a pity he accidentally threw the match, because that would have been real cool to see.

Dude it's those damn Frogs that destroy me!

Posted by BBAlpert

That frog is weak to ice! Good thing we've got our resident ice magic specialist, Vinny.

Posted by Agnosticwatermelon

FOE stands for Formido Oppugnatura Exsequens

Also you can make the combat more much faster by holding down the A button

Oh boy, loli porn.

I LOVE grinding.

SEXISM. I quit after they called the character design "gross".

I haven't gotten to the frogs yet, you mean their worst than Rats!? O_o

@shamanultra: I'd say it's less about sexism and more about characters that look like 10 year old girls wearing skimpy clothing.

Awesome music!

SEXISM. I quit after they called the character design "gross".

A character who looks about eight years old and has cleavage is gross.

The art style doesn't appeal to me, but it shouldn't detract from the game. They were willing to overlook Dust's art style because it had good game play and story. As long as the game isn't lazy, and obviously exploitative commenting on the art style is kind of pointless.

Yeah, because being grossed out by sexualization of characters that look like little girls is weird.

Posted by xMrSunshine

Those attack type icons in the weakness screen are straight from Persona 3 (and 4). Weird. I guess Atlus felt that it's okay to recycle them but I guess it doesn't really matter.

Posted by mrangryface

If you aren't using 'uneven boob' nightseeker art you're doing it wrong!

Tip hold y for quick sell.

Yes, this game is really pornography that somehow slipped past the ESRB. Please call the police if you haven't already.

Actually, when you unlock each of the 3 classes in EO4, you also get the ability to level up 2 characters automatically to 25/35/45 respectively, which is about or just slightly lower than where the game expects you to be at those points. So there you go. Go buy it. :)

It didn't. Both Vinny and Patrick still seem to like the game despite the art style. It's not like they saw that art said "FUCK THIS GAME" and turned it off. It's okay to like a game but be aware that one particular part of the game is kind of misguided.

Posted by GasparNolasco

Never heard of this game before and it looks really good!

Posted by Amethus

Put like 6 hours into this game already. It's tough but pretty fun. It doesn't seem to be all about grinding though. Died to a boss and only got him halfway dead. Tried it again immediately and ended up killing him just by being more offensive.

Posted by mrangryface

@milkman: They were fair. I think anyone visibly defensive by Patrick and Vinny's opinions of the art probably have some broader shame issues that extend outside of this discussion to deal with.

Art style aside, the gameplay looks pretty fun. ( if you like this genre anyway )

Specifically i like the use of the dual screens for once.

Posted by AlexanderSheen

Aside from the questionable looking characters, this game looks totally competent.

If I don't like the art style of a game, I don't play it. I don't want to have to look at visuals I don't find attractive just because the gameplay might be good.

Posted by ImmortalSaiyan

Why is this type of moe blob art so widespread these days. It only looked good in Lucky Star. Here is it awful. Those outfits really don't help.

I wish I could experiment with new games every other week like Patrick is doing with games like this and 999.

Posted by GasparNolasco

People commenting on being grossed out by 8 year olds wearing skimpy outfits have apparently never seem anything from Japan ever.

Posted by Karkarov

The commentary makes me feel like they forgot they quicklooked Etrian Odyssey 3. Sure Bodega did most of it but I am pretty sure Brad or someone else was there too.

I don't think that is a fair generalization. I could name plenty of anime or anime looking video games that don't look like this game.

@patrickklepek

If you decide to continue to play this, got a few tips to share with you.

1. You should hit up the options and raise the battle speed so you don't go insane.

2. The party make up is actually way more important than the actual grinding. Synergy has historically dominated in this series, but grinding is there to fall back on in case you're stumped.

3. Consider investing in a class that can bind body parts like a Sniper or when you unlock Arcanist (legs for stopping leg skills and lowering evade, arms for stopping attacks/arm skills, and head for stopping magic skills and lowering defense/resist).

4. On top of investing in bind skills, you should also strongly consider using a Dancer (despite the terrible character art) for buffs. They are arguably the most OP class in the game.

5. If you decide to not use a Dancer, you should really rush the refresh, treat, and recovery skills on your medic. Status effects can easily turn an easy battle into an impossible to deal with battle.

6. If you do want to grind, you can do a sort of AFK grind on the side without paying much attention by using the auto walk arrows. When you go into battle, you can press L to have all your characters auto attack until the battle ends. If you use this in a low level area, the only thing you'll need to do is press L when a battle starts and A when it ends. It's typically what I do while I'm busy with working on real life stuff.

Hope that helps and hope you continue to give the game a chance. It really doesn't take up as much time as you would think and you really don't need to grind as much as you might have heard. Just keep your gear as up to date as possible and try to keep a high synergy party going and you'll faceroll the game easily enough.
