What if, imagine this, it's true?

Terrible comments here, guys. How the hell is he a "hipster"? I guess that word doesn't have any meaning anymore.

Synesthesia like a mofo, yo! This game looks rad! I think I'll go play some Space Giraffe. :D

Brad; "How did you end up on the PS3?" = Why did you release on the PS3? :P This game is not for me...

I don't think it had any valuable meaning in the first place.

So I watched 30 minutes of a game and still have no fucking clue how you play. But it's never coming out in Europe anyway like other games so I'll stop thinking about it.

JEZUUUS there should be and epilepsy warning on this

People are confusing hipsterism with good ol' snarkyness. Anyways, this game doesn't look very appealing to me. The music is good though.

Is lack of hdmi for the video the reason why the video quality is so crappy?

I've never really been into these kinds of games. It's cut from the same cloth as rez, frequency, amplitude, child of eden, ect. The only one of those games that I ever liked was adiosurf and that rested fully on being able to import your own music. If you couldn't do that in adiosurf then I would lump it in with the others. Maybe it's just the hipster developer in this quicklook but I'm getting this, "yea man its just like...do whatever you want ya know? What is this game, you ask? What is anything, man? Maybe those orbs are enemies and maybe they're your friends. Maybe those orbs are you."

I'm being a bit too cynical about but it kind of rubs me the wrong way. More power to you if you're into this stuff though.

Not you being cynical because that's exactly the same vibe i got from this QL.

At first sight this looks pretty much in line with all kinds of other tunnel-shooter-music-remixy games. But instead of making that clear the developer activley tries to prevent any kind of categorizing or explaining of actual game elements for the sake of making it look unique and something completly new.

What is the goal? Is it an score attack type of game? Is the player actually able to "fail" a level? What differenciates the levels from each other? Original designed with eport's in mind? Uhm what?

It all goes downhill when asked about in-game elements and the developer comes up with some off-hand, supposedly funny answer about them being neither enemies nor friends nor objects to interact with. What? Doesn't he have a name for these things even inside the games code? Why not explain what they actually do? What's their function? The explanation offered is irritating at best and doesn't help at all to explain the games fundamental logic.

Didn't know much about the game coming here, and now i feel like i seem to know even less. Because i still don't understand the positive buzz this game is getting in some places. Sure it's easy to get an vague impression of "what to do" by watching the same gameplay for 30+ minutes, but without details as to why one should be doing this stuff it feels pointless and disconnected. In the end it felt generic and pointless as a game.

That's not the best way to present a game you wanna sell to people.

Does this have Trans-vibrator support?

Oooh, such a weird situation. I didn't really like this guy's personality, answers or attitude.

Then again, that doesn't make the game any worse. And I like the look of the game. I'm interested.

Should there be a bleed effect between those two things? On the one hand, that reinforces authorship in games, especially on a one man show like this, on the other hand, the content should speak for itself.

Hm... I need to ponder his one carefully.

Strange to see all these negative comments about the developer. He didn't seem like a dick at all to me. The game looks cool. Unfortunately, I don't have a PS3, so I can't play it.

I would also say the game looks very different from Tempest in all but the most superficial ways. It looks like it has more in common with a game like AudioSurf, with the color matching, or Rez, in how you sort of paint the targets.

Holy fucking shit I'm five minutes in and this guy is already obnoxious as fuck.

This must be how other people feel when they look at Space Giraffe...

I have absolutely no idea what just happened...

Edit: Oh, and Brad, don't worry. I got all your references. The other guys were just jerks and/or stupid.

Posted by NmareBfly

I think these guys need to get together with Jeff Minter to make... something. I'm not sure if it would be a game, but it would sure explode some retinas.

This game is less Tempest and more Space Giraffe, IMO.

@Nethlem: I had the same questions as you and I felt that watching this video pretty much answered them. He does go all indie and give pretty shitty answers but I think that's because Brad was pushing him towards that.

"What is the goal?" It changes per level, it clearly states at the top what the levels goal is!

"Is it an score attack type of game?" Again it changes per level, sometimes it is.

"Is the player actually able to "fail" a level?" You could get one star and fail but it's not like guitar hero so it won't kick you out mid-level unless that particular level does that.

"What differenciates the levels from each other?" The goals and ever evolving mechanics

"Original designed with eport's in mind? Uhm what?" He said that was starting concept, it's obviously not an esport in the original sense and you can see a competitive side through the leaderboards.

I agree that this was a bad quick look and I hate to be that guy but the questions you posed were answered!

Brad was geeking out way to much in this quick look to make it a decent QLEX, I would love to see Jeff do a quick look on this because he usually handles the music rhythm games and I don't think I've ever seen him geek out, at least to the extent Brad does over this game.

I'm glad to see I'm not the only one that doesn't seem to get what the deal is here. This just looks like a visualizer with trippy music that you interact with. That's not something I need. If there is actually compelling gameplay going on here, maybe it just wasn't shown very well. It is nice to see more indie stuff and original titles that aren't just "Shoot Dudes 4: The Subtitle," but I feel like this is just a bit out there for my tastes... maybe. I can't really tell.

I guess I share your taste then, cause this looks fucking incomprehensible (and I was the one who loved Space Giraffe!). I know the GB crew are creaming themselves over this game, I just don't see what the big deal is, it looks like something I had running in Winamp 10 years ago. And Shawn McGrath sounds like every annoying douchebag indie dev rolled into one. I can't stand his attitude.

/end rant.

I was stoked to buy this game until I realised that it won't be coming out in Europe for another month. Microsoft may have some strange practices with their XBLA releases, but at least everything releases around the world at the same time.

Also "it's not at all like Tempest, actually", c'mon dude, it looks bears a slight resemblance to Tempest

It's because the quality settings they use can't cope with such a busy video, so it's full of compression artifacts.

Can't understand a single thing going on in this game, but I loved watching the Quick Look!

The devs were really cool too.

It's funny how Shawn is sooo awesome and real, and doesn't have a PR puppet master's arm up his ass, and people tear into him. You guys really want games to be made and described by soulless robots?

Shawn is awesome, this game is awesome. Some of you guys are just being ugly dicks.

People are so used to the soulless shiny surfaces PR produces that apparently any little bit of character is now considered "being a dick". It's dumb in a medium that totally has room for personality. I like the guy, he speaks his mind. It's one of the reasons I come to GB for, they always get industry people to open up.

pretty much this.

This video is 36 minutes long.

Vinny tried to help everyone else out watching this video by simply asking how the game is played or what is going on, basically what everyone else was thinking as well.

The answer to everything: "Its anything you want it to be man".

I understand the developer's apparent need to separate himself from other similar games, excessively pat himself on the back, and make it absolutely positively clear that this game is NOT TEMPEST. But for those people who care about playing the video games... Please explain how to play the video games.

At the end of the 36 minutes, I still have no clue.

Oh I think you might be over generalizing the community a tad there; check how people reacted to Tim Schafer, Brad Muir, Dave Lang or pretty much any other developer in a QLEX with one or two exceptions (Warp). These are not exactly soulless PR shills now are they, and yet they did not generate this type of reaction.

It's wrong to say people react this way to any developer with personality - just certain types of personality. Whether the reaction is justified in this instance is another matter (that I won't comment on).

You guys. I don;t know what the game is here. Its cool that they came and everything. But like it looks like a screen saver. What do you do in this game? It looks purdy, but my man Sean McGrath was giving answers like, "what are enemies." and "Yea its like an indie game from Japan that you wouldn't know about."

Do you shoot stuff? Do you have to drive through the orange stuff. help me GB forumz you're my only hope.

I did feel like this video was Vinnie walking in on Brad and Shawn like he was their like middle-aged dad walking in on them like playing video-games in the 70s.

Vinnie: What are you crazy cats up to

Brad Shawn: Its ok dad you wouldn't understand the lights and the colors have to swirl in time with the music in the game?

Vinnie: So is it like pong?.

Brad/Shawn: No its more like Pong, but inside out.

Vinnie: ok, well...don't sit too close to the tube. ( confused and goes downstairs to watch the Mets.)

From what I can tell, you have to....I don't know, man. If this game doesn't have a good tutorial, it's going to lose a lot of good word. This game is too crazy for me.

Don't worry! The game is very good at teaching you how to play and all of it makes sense immediately. It only seems confusing when you watch people playing later on in the game without any frame of reference.

I've played about two hours now. Game is great. Controls are tight and reward skillful play. Good sense of speed once you learn how to really get going fast.

Posted by Mumrik

There's a really weird disconnect between the colorful trippy 90's Glide-based 3D screensaver look of the the game and the "look mah, I made this in MS Paint" look of the interface.

Unless you're a pothead who's wildly attracted by the light-show, it seems pretty hard to form an opinion on this game without actually playing it. I'm curious, but I don't own a PS3, so...

Hey dude, you say you made it on the PS3 because you like the controller - that controller works on the PC too...

That's a really shitty answer from the dev. Dyad has very clearly defined goals on every track. You absolutely can fail, either by having too many collisions (if the track calls for that) or running out of time (track depending), etc.

Posted by beard_of_zeus

This looks crazy and I still don't completely understand it, but I'm gonna go buy it. Seems like something you just need to play.

Edited by HerbieBug

Okay this is an awful Quicklook. It's the equivalent of watching someone go for high score on Geometry Wars without having ever seen or played Geometry Wars, and starting the video after they've already gone past 500,000 points. Whole bunch of flashing lights and colours that don't make any sense.

I think they did the game a disservice showing it like this. As I see in the comments, the take away if you haven't played it is "lots of flashy colours, barely looks like a game". And it's not that at all.

I think Brad and Vinny should do a non EX version QL of this starting at level 1 and show how the game is actually played.

Posted by melodiousj

God Damn I love Taurus Trooper, and Kenta Cho in general. Definitely getting a vibe of that from this video.

I'm also getting a Dream Trigger vibe from it, in that it makes no sense at all unless you play it, and you're probably gonna screw up a lot at first and not have the faintest clue why, and then it suddenly clicks and you have no idea how to explain it to another human being in a way that makes sense.

Except that, unlike Dream Trigger, this game looks like it might not be a fascinating trainwreck of a game.

Posted by Grimhild

I love gameplay/sound track integration, but it's going to be really hard not to play this at some point while listening to Pretty Lights.

Yeah, still on the fence about this, and the QL has done nothing to sell me on it (not that that's the purpose of a QL). I guess I'll wait for the demo, but by then the Plus discount will be gone.
