Hooray, super exited for this. I love Divinity Original Sin, but this looks like much more my type of classic RPG. I like the more muted, down to earth, realistic art-style much more than the manic, ornamental glow-y sexified art-style in divinity, and I like the more serious tone and stronger focus on story.

Love seeing the resurgence of old-school type RPG's like this and Divinity. Just wish I had more time to actually play them...

I continually forget that Rorie used to work for Obsidian. I wish he would tell some stories sometime.

This was by far the easiest Kickstarter I've backed. I really can't wait for this game.

EDIT: I know it's weird, but I'm glad the option is there for a solid, 1/3 screen solid bar at the bottom for the UI. I couldn't remember if they mentioned that in the kickstarter updates or not, but playing through Planescape again right now, I realized that I really like it.

While I'm really looking forward to this game (and even more so Torment. Ugh, I spent too much money on that one), this Quick Look felt kinda rushed. They didn't really spend much time explaining the character creation, lore or mechanics, it was more of a general overview. Not that that's really a problem, there's plenty of information about this game out there if you want to find out more about it.

Though I have to say, I never really liked Baldur's Gate 1 or 2. I'm not sure what it was, maybe the clunky combat or that I'm not much of a fan of the DnD spell memorisation system in videogames. But somehow I could bear all of that in Icewind Dale (2) and thankfully combat wasn't as much of a focus in my favorite game of all time, Planescape: Torment (wanna see my Sensate tattoo? ;D). Might have been just that the characters and story didn't grab me as much and there were less decisions in conversations.

I am irrationally excited about this game, and between this, Divinity and Wasteland I think 2014 is going to be a good year for RPGs.

I have to say, while the overall game looks rad, I'm pretty disappointed in the animations so far. Maybe it's because I'm an animator myself, so I'm extra picky, but it makes the combat seem super stuttery and loose any kind of flow. With this kind of fixed camera where you don't get a lot of detail, animation goes a long way to aid the immersion in what's happening. I'm playing The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing now, and the terrific enemy movement in that game really brings that world to life.

Anyway, I love these kind of stat-heavy cRPGs so I will play the shit out of this regardless. I just wish that in their push for Infinity Engine fan service, janky animation was one of the things they left in the past.

I'm still very bitter about the death of pre-rendered backgrounds over the last decade, so I'm glad to see it pop back up again here and there. Full 3D environments rarely looked as visually impressive as those old 2D art backdrops.

Other than that, this is looking amazing. I didn't even realize how much they were leaning in on the infinity engine style when I first backed the project.

That character creation toolset gave me an orgasm :D

Maybe I somehow missed it in the quicklook; but did they talk about what system magic uses in game? i wanted to know if it's mana based or you have to rest to recover uses like in the old ie games

Posted by MrWakka

As a huge fan of the old IE games, I could not be more hyped for this game. It looks like one of the classic IE games, and now that my appetite has been whetted its going to be a long wait indeed for release. Hopefully it turns out as good as it looks and we'll get a franchise out of it.

My dream of playing an Infinity Engine game without those awful paper dolls is almost a reality. Can't wait to play as a monk; my favorite class in these games.

Also... THIS IS WHY CROWDFUNDING IS AWESOME! Look at all these CRPGs coming out! It's amazing. They absolutely would not be coming out were it not for crowdfunding. Hope this game is great.

Edited by jkz

This looks fucking fantastic. I really want to get into Divinity too, but I really prefer this style of CRPG when it's built around a more narrative focus (unlike Divinity), and I REALLY trust Obsidian when it comes to writing RPG stories.

That scrolling text, in my mind I can already hear it; Nestled atop the cliff that rise from the Sword Coast, the citadel of Candlekeep...

By the people who made some of my all time favorite games, no way I wouldn't back it.

Looks like a day one buy for me. Been greatly enjoying Divinity:OS so far and this seems like it's in the same vein.

This looks just as amazing as I hoped it would. Been waiting more than a decade for Baldurs Gate 3. Now it seems I'm getting multiple Baldurs Gate-likes in a two year span.. I have a big smile these days.

So excited to play this game. I loved all the infinity engine games.

This game looks exactly like how I remembered Baldurs Gate in my head. Can't wait!

I really wish this took place in the forgotten realms, I have been wanting a new game like this set in that universe. Though this still looks great. It does however take quite a bit for me to get invested in a new universe.

They lost me at "get the feels", so about 4 minutes in. Good job.

Rory.

AD&D (2nd edition i think) health did go to -10.

at 0 hit points you were unconscious but still able to be revived via spells.

at -10 you were permanently dead

thats my memory from years ago.

Looks really good. Seems to clean up a lot of the clutter from the Infinity Engine games. Don't understand why people want that hideous bottom border back though.

Just a random thought... If a game is in Beta, like this is, shouldn't there be a new category for that... Instead of Quick Look EX, how about Unfinished EX?

Posted by chiablo

I'm currently playing through Baldur's Gate on the iPad and it is making me super excited for new CRPGs that are coming out or coming soon.

Posted by thaquoth

Fuck. I am so glad I backed this. This looks really fantastic.

I'm always surprised when I hear an unfimiliar voice and realise it's a QL EX, not just a normal QL.
I never notice the EX in the title, never.

C'mon GB. Don't play the generic character. Play a chanter or a cipher.

Josh says a lot of ironic stuff like that. Guaranteed he wasn't being serious.

Never been into these games but Divinity is kind of being a gateway drug right now. I really want to start digging deeper into crpgs.

Ahh, I love when people pronounce GUI as a word!

Wow! Super impressive. It's really shaping up better than I could have hoped.

I had this exact thought.

Oh god, the UI of those games is one of the worst parts about them, what is wrong with you people?! I sincerely hope they do several versions, one for the people living in the past, and one for people who actually want a usable interface.

Animations have been steadily improving since they started showing examples. I suspect they're not done tweaking yet.

@cagliostro88: You'd have to search through the 80+ updates (and probably the Something Awful forums) to get all Sawyer has said about magic, but mana won't be a thing. More traditional D&D memorize and rest.

That thumbnail (is it still a thumbnail?) looks like something off the back of the box on a late 90's PC RPG.

And I like it.

Edit: Oh wow, this looks A LOT like Baldur's Gate.

I like that the new level of content output that came with GBeast has freed me of the notions that I have to watch every single piece of content. I'm now okay with just skipping a video if I'm not finding it really cool.

Posted by Fattony12000

I-I should have backed this.

Edited by beatnik11

This looks absolutely amazing. They took everything great about those old Infinity Engine games and just made a modern version. PC gamers need proper deep RPGs like this. Bioware has gone downhill over the last 5 years or so making watered down consolefied RPGs and Bethesda makes neat worlds to explore but shallow games. Other than The Witcher games and the occasional Obsidian made sequel (they are always better than the initial games), RPGs have kinda lost their way. Now that there is a revival with Divinity, Wasteland 2, PoE, Torment I think we are going back into a sort of golden age for the cRPG

Amen brother. Even the UI in this build seems a lot better than the old ones. Everything else I have seen or heard in this video has me very excited for this game. Original sin is a terrific game, but something about it (probably the visual style) doesn't do it for me. This, on the other hand, seems more like my cup of tea.

Love that @rorie is fortuitously both the "RPG" guy and the "Obsidian" guy.

Josh Sawyer is basically the best dude.

Edited by Gantrathor

This is really, really nitpicky, but it bugs me when a character holds their sword near the bottom of the hilt instead of holding it up near the hand guard in order to, you know, guard their hand. I know absolutely nothing about swords or sword fighting, but I can't imagine that being the proper way to wield one, but maybe I'm wrong about that. I won't use a sword in a game like this if the character is holding it that way because it bugs me way too much. Yes, I know, it's a really stupid thing to complain about.

Anyways, I do think that the game looks good, other than that one really minor thing that probably bugs less than 1% of the player base. I'm excited to play it, even if I won't use swords. :p

Do muscle wizards go to a school or a gym to learn their craft? Is a school with a gym in it or does the gym get primary billing? Regardless, I want in Brad.
