Is it weird that I was kind of disappointed by the memorial? I feel like I've heard them talk it up bigger than a scroll bar and some music.

I hope they were playing an alpha/early beta build of the game in this QL:EX, because it seems pretty buggy between the camera glitching out, monsters getting stuck in standing poses, NPCs in the base spawning in the J pose, etc.

Game looks amazing, though.

I'm looking forward to this more than any other game right now, X-Com is my shit! I was super skeptical early on at first because of that FPS game and the general apprehension of anything being a "Remake" but this game looks awesome.

I'm sold already, Firaxis ! I watched every bit of content on your YouTube account, pre-ordered the game, played the demo twice and watched this live-stream JUST RELEASE THE GAME ALREADY ! I CAN'T WAIT ANY LONGER ! I had to buy the original game to try it out I was so impatient (I was surprised to see how good it was... despite how complex and thick the game is at first). I just gotta play it ! Why are doing this to me Firaxis ? WHY ?!

That was an awesome QL EX by the way. Ryan was sold the game even more than the guys from Firaxis. Greg and Garth are awesome ! Also, the build they were playing was SO glitchy. Between the character models not animating in the HQ, the cool camera angles not working during the missions and the character models not getting on the ground when they died... That was hilarious xD

Damn Vinny got DROPPED...lol. Didn't even get to do anything.

I dunno how I feel about the geoscope being so simplified.. And I still want to stun rod an ethereal put him in my backpack run to the skyranger and escape before my team is mind controlled and murdered.

I'm really excited for this though, already preordered. :]

I've been seeing some disconcerting things about the pc version of this game. Stuff like seeing the tops of buildings even though there are no textures up there because the xbox version doesn't zoom out as far as the pc version. Seems to imply that it's a console port.

So far what they showed looked really good, bugs aside. As long as it plays well then it's not really an issue although I was a little surprised this is a full retail release. I thought it was like a $20 game.

You read my mind!

Dude I completely thought he had randomly joined the QL for a few minutes.

This seems disconcertingly buggy for a game that's supposed to be done. Stuff like the dead Thin Man getting stuck in that standing pose, the cutscene camera problems, and the people in the base failing to animate may not seem game breaking, but they're also blatantly obvious. If their QA department missed something like that, what else did they miss? If it was an intentional choice to leave them in because of time requirements, what else did they compromise on? Their failure to acknowledge those bugs in any way is also disappointing.

This just went from a potential pre-order to waiting for word on how busted the release version is.

---edit---

Ryan confirmed on Twitter that this was NOT a final build of the game (for whatever reason). So that's good to hear. Though that makes it all the more silly that they didn't acknowledge the bugs. They should have just said "oh yeah, don't worry about that glitch, this isn't the final build of the game" and then they wouldn't have people like me wondering if the final game is going to be full of jank.

I'm surprised Brad wasn't the first to be KIA haha. Anyways, it looks rather interesting, although it seems rather intense with the resource management and all that. I'll keep an eye out for this one...

Good interview Giant Bomb! Well done Ryan.

It wasn't the only really apparent bug in there, however that one in specific must have been quite embarrassing for them.

But will I, the core gamer, enjoy it? I'm unconvinced.

Listen, buddy! There's a level of obsession you need to have before you can grab that tag. Play some more Halo, Mass Effect, or Skyrim and get back to me.

Done, done, and...done! Can I has the title of "core gamer" now? I own most of the current platforms as well!

I hope that when they say "I don't know if it's working in this build" when talking about the hero Sid Meier character means that this is some really old build because if all of those camera and character model hiccups are in the final version it's going to be a real bummer.

Posted by Happenstance

Good Quick Look, I wasnt particularly bothered about this game but its convinced me to download the Steam demo tonight and give it a try.

Posted by DJJoeJoe

@xMrSunshine: Prolly doesn't/didn't take long to fix all that stuff. It's not in the demo.

Posted by vinsanityv22

Not a fan of the EX Quick Looks and how they neuter the Giant Bomb crew. But I DO want to see more XCOM. Don't need to though, I'm already sold on this puppy. I'll check it out anyway...

GB Crew; you should invite industry guys like these to *normal* Quick Looks. Have them let loose and riff on other people's games. Showing off demos of their own stuff, with the shadow of a publisher's PR department and NDA's looming large... it's just not right.

Posted by xMrSunshine

@DJJoeJoe: That's definitely good to hear.

Devs from most studios would never set foot near an ordinary quick look. It creates... issues. Not because they're bad people, just because of how the industry works. People who are already established personalities might be able to take a chance, but it's still pretty risky (and probably produces no real benefit for the studio, so there's no way the studio would give it the OK unless the dev demanded to do it).

Keep in mind that some studios still forbid their developers from talking in public about their work in any capacity (including posting on official forums!)

This seems all right, despite being a bit buggy in a couple of places. I just hope the UI translates well over to PC. I'm seeing a lot of...big menus.

What appeared to be buggy to you? Bear in mind that they were playing a pre-release build not the full retail build. I THINK I noticed that some units did not fall down dead even though they had just been killed. But that seemed like a minor bug that they probably fixed for retail and even if they didn't, it's not a big deal.

I always enjoy being able to rename troops. It was fun to see the GB crew march into battle. It seems like such a small detail but I become more invested in the soldiers that way.

With them briefly mentioning Gamespot in the video, I was curious about their coverage. I'm currently in the middle of watching a two hour video they did.

HOOK IT INTO MY VEINS!

Posted by leebmx

Are they playing on PC or XBOX?

Posted by WSGEXE

@probablytuna: It's complex in a good way if it's anything like the original. Haven't you ever wanted to murder aliens and take them back to your lab for dissection? It's as simple as putting a few scientists on it and waiting to hear their results. Most of the game works similarly. You're only managing money really.

Paul Barnett featured in the XBLA Quake Quick Look and Brad Muir sat in for the Apples to Apples, $1,000,000 pyramid and Magic 2013 Quick Looks, so while I know about the special relationship with those guys and that the games were relatively minor, it does show that it could happen with some developers. Personally I would find the insight of a developer to be really interesting.

Well yeah but there's also the thing about pissing off certain countries if you don't pay attention to them. This is what I dread in games because my playstyle is I like to max out everything or get the best result. And things like permadeath kinda puts me off in a way but I guess that is one of the challenges and one of the game's strong points. I'm still interested, I just don't know if I will like it.

Jake Solomon is a dreamboat.

Posted by WSGEXE

@probablytuna: You'll start out getting funding from several countries but they'll all make demands on you that you can't necessarily fulfill. Ex: China & Australia are both being terrorized by aliens, which do you help? Likely you'll help the one providing more funding. You have to alienate certain countries to get in the good graces of others. But you can regain the trust of nations later, so you can min/max if you really want to.

This QL:EX sold me on this game. It looks awesome!

It's finally upon us. Official Giantbomb QL, demo on Steam now and finally a look at the Sid Meier appearance that has been talked about for awhile. I hope this is going to be everything it's shaping up to be. I'm rather confident at this point though.

This EX was quite good. Charismatic guys from Firaxis ^^

Posted by MrMuscle

Did they live stream their conversation about Fast 5 anywhere? Id love to listen to that.

quick look ex-es are usually TERRIBLE... but this was actually really good!

thank you, firaxis, and I'm going to definitely buy yr game soon.

Damn it Ryan I know this is GiantBomb. Stop telling me! It keeps freaking me out, like I'm not at GiantBomb or your telling me it with a wink wink kinda thing... Wait... I... I need an adult.

Posted by hwy_61

I enjoyed that very much, and now I finally see what all the fuss is about. I never played the original XCOM, so I have zero nostalgia. I must admit, that looked pretty cool. I think I may preorder this on Steam!
