If you like PC games in a steampunk setting and the particular genre, E.Y.E. has a lot to offer and should hopefully get better from post-release support to iron out some of the problems. Disappointing that they didn't figure out some of the basic stuff like right-clicking to self-heal, stopping bleeding, etc.

Also turning down reinforcements in the options whilst playing solo is key to having more fun with the game. The mobs seem designed more for multiplayer.

You didn't have any other objectives there, Brad, cause at the beginning of the mission you chose to hack the terminal rather than go for another objective/way to end the mission.

Posted by Jimbot

I don't blame the confusion with the hacking. You have to take a few minutes to read what each function does before you try it out and even then it takes several hacks to learn how things work. The tutorials are just text with some video but they do help out learning the basics.

The med kit heals others with the Left mouse and heals yourself with the Right mouse. You have to let it charge up, though. When you run out of ammo in your current magazine, you have to manually press "R" to reload. Plus the fact that ammo reserves is based off of magazines left, not bullets. If you reload a weapon with ammo still left in the magazine you lose it forever.

The game is confusing as heck in the beginning, but after a hour or so you'll learn how most things work and it'll be easy as pie. It's one of those games that doesn't really make for a quicklook unless you learned the basics. They could have done a better job at explaining things but it isn't nearly as confusing as everyone makes it out to be.

good god its so hard to watch Brad fail so many times in this quick look. =\

Bought this game 10 minutes into the quicklook, sorta regretting at the end of the quicklook. Well i've learnt a lesson...

Posted by DeadDorf

Brad: "I don't know anything about this game"... maybe wait a little to do the Quick Look then.

Brad really is terrible at games .....

This game looks super bad. I usually go for games like this, but buggyness and lack of information and instruction are unforgivable. Dave just breaking this quicklook.

Hey Brad maybe you should be more open minded

lack of information? Yeah just pages and pages of tutorials, but why would you want to use your brain and read? Just go back to COD or whatever other brainless (dopamine drip) games you play

HACKING TIP:

Reduce the targets attack to 0 and try to maintain that between attacking. When the targets attack is at 0 the target will always spend turns using "overflow" which will also decrease their defenses.

It's a bit tedious but it gets the job done most of the time.

Brad is always confused by everything . How is it possible he got a job in the industry , where is professionalism?

Yeh I've got to add my voice to the list and say I was very annoyed throughout this Ql, other than the brief periods where the guys were actually starting to understand stuff by chance.

This is just the sort of interesting, less-well-known game that a QL should be perfect for, but the lack of basic understanding or effort from Brad before recording this made it fairly useless to someone wanting to know the mechanics of the game.

What exactly is weird?

everyone in this quicklook was equally confused. It was practically his 1st time playing the darn game and it's been said in the comments that it takes a few hours to get used to things. He's in the industry because he writes excellent reviews and has a great and respectful personality, unlike you.

If the game doesn't take the time to explain some of the most basic aspects of gameplay, then it's not the player's fault, it's the developers. This looks to be a pretty elaborate title that would be a great playthrough once you've had 2-3 hours to understand most of the gameplay elements, but that's rarely what quicklooks are designed for. Personally, I appreciate knowing that when I sit down with this game for the first time, it's going to do very little to explain the actual gameplay mechanics, regardless of how great they might be.

Would it kill them to throw up a pop-up the first time you're bleeding out that gives you some indication of how to heal yourself?

This game looks full of some jank. But also, DAMN this game looks good.

Thanks for doing this QL guys. I love how excited Dave got about this game.

Now, while I love E.Y.E., nobody in their right mind can say that their tutorial system is anything but horrible. Did you notice that it was in the Madness tutorial they said that you should look at the Maintenance tutorial to learn how to heal (and the Madness tutorial pretty much only said that you can go insane, and that there are different kinds of madnesses with different effects, not why you go mad or what you can do about it)? They could have named the tutorials something more informative, who would really look at a tutorial named "Maintenance" when they want to find out how not to bleed to death? Also, since the tutorial videos don't really tell you anything, they could have skipped that and just have had more tutorial text, as it is, the tutorial subtitles tell you about as much as loading screen hints do.

You really don't need to "use your brain" to learn the game mechanics in E.Y.E., it's much more like playing Maniac Mansion or any other classic point and click adventure; you try everything until you notice something that works - like putting the hamster in the microwave oven - and after that you know what you need to do, but only because you tried every button on the keyboard, not because the solution made any sense whatsoever.

Like other people said, I get the whole "playing games on camera" thing, and normally I'm not one to jump on that, but I think you're misrepresenting this game by not even trying to learn the systems beforehand.

Yes. This is one of those Quick Looks where I wanted to reach through the screen and throttle Brad. This is like watching my mom trying to figure out a game. I don't understand how it's so onerous to RTFM for 10 minutes before you start rolling. I understand that Quick Looks are supposed to be an unvarnished take on a game... but this isn't just unvarnished, this is covered in rusty nails and mold and mouse poop.

Weirder than Cargo? Brad, you turncoat.

Edited by avidwriter

I hate when games do that "reload now and lose those bullets" crap. It's a game, I don't want to worry about that crap just let me reload whenever the hell I want.

Oh and the point of some of these QL's is to just jump into a game like a new person playing might. Showing people if the game is "pick up and play" or in this case, not very new player friendly.

Wasn't Cargo just intentionally insane? E.Y.E. seems to try to tell some kind of story, and explain it's world, but it's all just incomprehensible weirdness.

I have no problem with it, but it could have been better at informing the player about it. As it is I don't even think it's mentioned in the tutorials, just in the loading screen hints nobody reads. Brad certainly didn't seem to know about it, as he reloaded after pretty much every shot.

You can never run out of ammo because every enemy you kill drops ammo for the weapon you currently have equipped 90% of the time. Barring that, you never run out of ammo in your armory. Buying weaponry is basically buying the right to use that gun from now on.

A shame Brad didn't focus on Psi. Right now, hacking is a broken because increasing the stats for it don't seem to have any tangible effect on the mini-game; but putting points in Psi lets you do really cool stuff. Holding down Shift then pressing the Left Mouse with a gun does the Psi push and the higher you Psi skill the more damage it does. It has these effects:

Pushes their dead ragdoll back
Pushes their dead ragdoll back while setting it on fire
Explodes them in a fine bloody mist

Also, having a high Psi skill lets you pick up heavier objects. You know those cars parked on the side of the road and that one, big piece of pipe they hid behind at that one point? Yeah, you can definitely pick those up and throw them at fools.  As I said before, the developers are taking criticisms to heart and are adjusting the distance and radius they spot you while you are sneaking and are also fixing a lot bugs and mechanics that are less than stellar. It's definitely a diamond in the rough but well worth picking up if you want something different from your first person shooters.

@fisk0
I think it was pretty apparent when then number of reserve ammo to the right of your current ammo is in the double digits instead of, say, 30/210 or something.

Let's do another QL of this with Snide after he has played it for a while.

Posted by avidwriter

I couldn't finish this QL. Not because of how he played, just the game looks terrible. Not graphics, gameplay.

No, they don't seem to have a higher chance to drop ammo for the weapon you have equipped, most enemies drop ammo for the Rotten Mound assault rifle, meaning you'll never run out of ammo if you use that weapon. Brad picked the other AR though, for which the ammo is a lot rarer, generally they drop both ammo for the Rotten Mound and the gun itself though, so if you run out of ammo for the other you can just drop it and pick up the Rotten Mound.

So I've been playing this a bit, and discovered a few things:

Stealth is definitely possible, but it requires you to get the cloak first, then your stealth also depends on your crouching/silence/etc

Enemies have unlimited respawns at the start, but you get side quests to go around cutting off their reinforcement early on, which will take out their ability to continually spawn.

Also, while the tutorial itself is not intuitive, definitely go through all the videos if you're going to play, it'll help your understanding a lot.

(Also: You can deflect bullets with the swords, which is awesome)

@Jumanji:  Well it looks like Brad doesn't even care to spend 10 minutes to prepare for a quick look (read manual , read a little about the game , do tutorial at least) . Its very lazy , "i don't give a shit" attitude . In other job , company he would be fired for such half-assed approach .
Posted by KommanderCevin

Brad never noticed his hacking attack stat was being depleted to zero at the outset of every hack.

They do. I use the Bearkiller Revolver all the time and I get ammo drops for it in the New Eden side mission map every other kill. It's like Resident Evil 4 - ammo drops depending on the weapons you have and if you need it. I was always surprised when Handcannon ammo dropped from villagers in the beginning of that game.
Posted by fisk0

@Jimbot: Strange, I've never had ammo for the guns I carry drop when I've been out, it's always been ammo for the Rotten Mound and one of the hand guns.

It's a lot less resource intensive than the Left 4 Dead games if you play at the lowest settings. I can play it on medium high settings on my machine with integrated ATi graphics, while I have to play TF2 and Left 4 Dead at pretty low resolutions and detail levels.

The devs have said there's a demo coming up though, so if you aren't sure I'd say you should wait.
