Yeah, I'll definitely pick this up at some point. (Perhaps when it's sub-$25, because games are too god damn expensive.)

Hot damn this game looks awesome. The whole fratboy jetsetter story makes me revulse but the random open world looks fun as hell. I hope the story closes as Jeff thinks but I've looked at other reviews that imply it wraps up without irony.

It really seems like I am supposed to dislike the main character here. I am very curious what the end of this game is now. I am not buying that he is athletic and therefore can do all that. It's typical convenient story cliche. Those people should have been dead quick, and the story didn't present an acceptable means of escape for them. Even the escape from the cage was weak.

@Shimmy said:

Honest question: if the player character was black and the pirates were white, would people still be calling this game racist?

Not trying to make a point, just curious.

My problem isn't that the main character is white and the people being killed are not. My issue is that it seems to be a trend in the Far Cry games that one white male slaughters many brown people. In this case it's even worse because the main character has no military experience and is suddenly better than all of the pirates.

Also, in the situation you describe I would need details as to why the black character is killing the pirates. Is the character trying to escape from being killed or trying to kill all the pirates because it's possible? Resident Evil 5 presents a fair reason for player and enemies to be who they are.

Now that we are talking about sexism in games, perhaps we should talk about racism in games,

IE: cast of all rich white guys stranded on an island with black people?

I think you need to go look at the definition of racism, because I don't think you understand what it means.

I love when people bring up the idea that there's something inherently racist about subjecting a character to a foreign area and because their races reflect each other in a certain way interpret it as racism. I'd find it just as culturally insensitive if middle eastern war games portrayed their 'natives' as white people if only because of how potentially desensitizing it is.

I was more commenting on the fact that all the rich white guys are rich WHITE guys.

well you could say that's more racist towards white people in that white people aren't going to hang out with people of other races.

Im not trying to fight on the internet. I just thought the stereo types in this game presented a good kickstart to talk about racism in games. I dont think this game is racist. I just think we need to ask our selves some questions, such as should video games influance socity or should socity inflance games.

As someone who loved Far Cry 2, this seems like a well made, solid video ass video game. Nothing special about it.

Truly the end of the generation is upon us, where developers stop giving a shit about framerates.

or maybe they were actually playing the Wii U version? /snark

Seriously, that console version looked rough and ran like shit.

Am I the only one that thought Far Cry 2 had the most bullshit ending out of the first two?

Also, Jeff is right: The characters other than the main antagonist seem extra douchey

Posted by Wampa1

@Sweetz: You know what's fucked up? I would LOVE Far Cry 2 if it just didn't have those respawning guard posts.

Posted by WasabiCurry

@Colourful_Hippie: From the QL, I have to say that consoles are really, really showing their age~ They have been showing it for quite some time. But when you start having frame rate issues, you might want to start working on those new consoles.

Will I enjoy this more than RDR? I doubt it but I'll probably have fun. They look very similar aside from the setting.

Black Card (not cart) is an ultra high end credit card with a bunch of perks that the super rich have access to. It just lends more support to the thought that the characters are super bro-ish, douchebag acting trust-fund babies.

I've never really been sold for an FPS, not even Halo to be frank. But this I want to play! The frame rate's killing me a little. I'm going home for winter break and don't always have access to a good PC... so I may have to settle for the console version.

I don't really see this as racist. Am I missing anything? Granted the game's not gonna get all of Southeast Asia down pat, it's at least trying to create an interesting, playable atmosphere. Is it a matter of the pirates being non-white?

It's a matter of people on the internet needing something to cry about.

Or maybe it's a matter of racism.

I dont understand what is hogwash. The problem is that people make assumptions based on their previous experiances. Thats why you always reach for the same place when you turn on the lights, its why you always trip going down a diffrent set of stairs, its also why you dont question why there is no rich trust fund black guy. The farther removed from the audiances previous experiances the more it has to explain. What Ithink Is an intresting question is, should games break conceved notions or do our preconceved notions have to change first?

Oh god, just launched the game from steam and got presented with a second (UPlay) launcer. Then after the game launches it basically locks up until it's able to connect to the server. Already regretting buying the game before I even started it =/ This better be worth it Ubisoft, 'cuz I can't wait for the moment when I can delete your POS software I have absolutely no interest in taking part in from my computer.

I'd probably wait for the GOG release. Far Cry 2 got released there, DRM free, last year. Horrible as Ubi's DRM is, they seem pretty fast at allowing DRM free versions, if GOG keeps expanding, maybe it'll even be less than 5 years for this.

The footage of the "douche bags" in the opening lasts about a minute. From that Jeff gleaned that they're awful people and deserve to die? I don't understand. From that video I deduce that they're young, attractive, and well off financially. What is it that they do that arouses such hatred? Skydive? Jesus, don't tell Jeff I went skydiving last month.

Also of note, this game releases on December 4th (one week from now). I would absolutely expect to have odd server issues pre-release, and wouldn't be terribly surprised to have them in the first few days of release (although that's not, in my opinion, acceptable).

Hope in agreement with Jeff/Vinny that the story just keeps going more bonkers the farther in. Remember the odd twist in the first game being so unexpected. Sold on the game & looks like they took what they could from the franchise then applied all the stuff learned from Far Cry2 to make a great sequel.
