Year of Luigi!

I played a bunch of this over the weekend, both alone and with some friends, gotta say I really dig it. Initially it felt super awkward to control Luigi after playing so much of the base game, but after adjusting to it, it's a nice change of pace from the rest of the game. The way Luigi's prone to sliding of platforms means it ends up feeling like Super Meat Boy or the 2D Sonic games in places, there's definitely an incentive to keep up your momentum.

The level design is great and I've encountered a ton of easter eggs already, lots of cleverly hidden secrets. Difficulty wise this feels like New Super Mario Bros U: The Lost Levels, it pretty much picks up where the base game left off in terms of difficulty. As someone who's found recent 2D Mario games to be a tad on the easy side, I welcome that

Anyway when it comes down to it, if you liked NSMBU, you'll probably like this. If you played that game and thought it felt a little dry, you'll probably just want to wait for 3D World.

Nabbit animates like garbage.

Posted by Aishan

So how much of the difficulty comes from level design and how much comes from Luigi's floaty, awkward movement?

Posted by Village_Guy

Nabbit doesn't give a fuck about fireballs, or anything else for that matter!

The video player was declared dead 6:13 in the video.

I will notify the next of kin.

e: Yeah, back to downloading videos and watching them in VLC. This is terrible and also slow, but some ten times faster if I just download it.

Two things:

- You can unlock Mario-physics after beating NSLU once

- Nabbit is intended for inexperienced players. You also get a different ending if you beat the game as him. (Iwata detailed he first part in one of the Nintendo Directs before E3, you guys should watch those, I guess^^)

Bonus thing:

- What they did patch in was the Pro Controller support. You couldn't use the thing at all pre-patch. I agree that it's dumb you can't play regular two-player with a GamePad, though.

Sad it isnt 4 players of them dying over and over again. Also, brad should be Nabbit.

Nintendo.

Wait... Nabbit is fucking immortal? How the hell did that happen?

Posted by SuperSolidSnake2019

...and my wait for a good game on that Wii U I bought about a year ago continues.

Posted by SpasticHeathen

Don't the toads maintain their normal jump and movement physics?

@gkhan: You don't want to know....

Yeah, I watch most of them on the Youtube player since those are at least reliable.

it IS like a horrible nightmare!

Still waiting on the price drop that will supposedly never come.

Edited by bhhawks78

I can't imagine willingly playing this game over the glut of awesome platformers available in other places in 2013.

Posted by Deathpooky

This looks like a cool little bonus and I like the more difficult levels. That's what made 3D Land so awesome in the second half. But still not enough to get me to buy a Wii U.

Edited by fox01313

Glad they're doing more with the franchise with more than just Mario but this seems strange though to see versus original games. Nabbit while being made of pure grade A nightmare fuel, also seems bugged as hell being quite invincible on many spots.

Is it just me, or does it look like Luigi controls kinda poorly in this? I don't mean the fact that he floats and slides; it looks like he just moves a whole lot more sluggishly than he did in SMB2/Lost Levels and other games that did his movement in a similar way.

The sticking point isn't that he slides, but that they simply took away his traction. Like Jeff mentions, it's like he's on ice all the time, and that's not really how Old Luigi controlled at all. He had trouble stopping or turning around once he'd gotten some momentum, sure, but I don't think he had that much trouble getting up to speed to start with since he was also fast.

Maybe I'm being too picky about it being like older Luigi controls, but the way they did his movement in this just seems less fun and a bit lazy.

I'm having a blast with it!

Brad's been quite clever in the past half dozen quick looks. Someone finally got some sleep!

Posted by DS23

Wow god fucking dammit I hate the baaahs in this series. Makes me want to never play ever.

Posted by NekuSakuraba

They should totally give Nabbit his own game, I'd play it.

Posted by joeshabadoo

give the GB dudes proper momentum to their platformer characters and watch them get all PMSy

Posted by MrLog

really, they didnt play this with all of them?

Edited by PhilipDuck

So what you're saying is that Brad should have played as Nabbit...

Brad screamin into mics!

Edited by DoctorWelch

This multiplayer shit is why Nintendo is doomed. They consistently screw up simple ideas, and we are slowly learning that the bigger ideas aren't much better.

Edited by Aegon

@brad please stop screaming like that. It's a mic and speaker destroyer.

Hey guys, guys.

Did you saw that... giant bomb during boss fight?

Do you get it? Giant bomb? Guys?

Guys...?

what the fuck is Nabbit?

Edited by PurpleSpandex

This game does not look good at all. Nintendo is a shell.

Maybe ;)

Definitely would've been the more appropriate choice for this QL. :D

I'm posting this at 6 minutes into the video and leaving the page once I click "Post Reply".

It's depressing how boring this looks.

Posted by lordofultima

I really like more of the same when it's something that is enjoyable. Like SMB platforming. Also, You guys are friggin' crazy. Luigi is the MVP character of Super Mario Bros. 2.

Edited by Forcen

The mother of the Mario brothers is named Mia obviously!

They really get annoyed at the smallest things when it comes to Nintendo.

That multiplayer stuff is so fucking stupid that knowing it exists has completely ruined my day.
