Christmas was a pack in w/ a magazine.

Posted by RudeCubes

Like seriously does no one realize this is a score attack game more than anything

Posted by HowDire

Looking forward to this

Christ, this reminds me how much this games sucked.

Posted by algertman

MK Genesis was worse than the SNES version.

Posted by Swabbleflange

This game is a textbook definition of rose-tinted nostalgia. Except it was always rubbish.

Some good music though.

Posted by RadicalWall

Now I kinda feel bad for being good at NiGHTS. Terrible game but great art and music (for the time).

Ugh, I can't stand Jeff's bitterness about this game. I can see that the game doesn't look great, but Jeff's attitude just seems really shitty...and it's also rubbing off on Brad too =(

That's crazy talk.

Fuck all of you, this game was GREAT!!

This is a game for young children. I would be surprised if any adults got real enjoyment from it.

Nights is about getting items on a track to get a high score. You get blue orbs to destroy the octopus thing. Then after that every item in the stage gives way more points and you have to collect items in quick succession to get a combo multiplier so you get all the points. You can just go back to nights' house any time after destroying the octopus. The point is to get back after getting as much points as you can to cash in your score because if you turn into a kid you lose alot of points.

Also you need to go fast by doing that drill thing so you can get as many points as possible

Jeff is WAY off base here. He sounds like he was Saturn hater in the day and never got over it. He speaks like he played Nights for 2 minutes before shrugging it off or giving it a chance. As someone who owned both the PS and the Saturn I loved games on BOTH. Nights was a great game that there has never been an analog for since sadly. Yes there are a few mechanics you needed to figure out but it was NOT as incomprehensible as Jeff makes it sound. Is it Super Mario Bros/World level of classic? No, but it still is a gem from the past. The game would have been better shown off if Brad had tried it for more than 5 seconds BEFORE the quick look and realized what was expected of him at least a bit.

Personally I don't remember EVER having this kind of trouble figuring out you collect the blue things to break the machine to get your orb things back and once you have the orb you can fly back to the home base to move on to the quest for the next orb and that you do it within the time limit that is counting down.

Oh well, I guess there's people who hate Mario too for some unfathomable reason. To each their own.

Edit: Oh, the one thing I WILL agree with is the top down portions (which I think there are only 2) are and always was fucking annoying bullshit.

Posted by jackelbeaver

Also brad: You're supposed to make an explosion right infront of the dragon or grab his head by sticking to it and then hitting drill to throw it. he'll grow the head back but lose a segment of his tail. keep doing it until his tail is gone and he dies.

I are cry.

Edited by Laini

The Nights hate was funny at first but I fear Jeff is actually serious. And it doesn't surprise me neither have any idea what's going on, it's pretty straight forward.

Wait...Brad knew how to beat the boss at the end but never thought to try the same grab and hit mechanic on the first boss in the Quick Look? Jeez Louise.

Dis gon be good.

Come, fly with me Jeff...
Posted by jackelbeaver

The way the paraloop works is that it creates an explosion that grabs items for you and damages enemies. Nights is kind of like tony hawk in that its got objectives and about doing combo links to get a ton of points.

This game sucks if you don't know how to play it. When you do know how to play it, it's only a little better. Watching someone else try and play this not knowing what they're doing sucks even more.

Posted by ZagZagovich

I once tried to emulate nights but it looked too broken in the emulator to play, apparently it is supposed to look like that. I'm a bit bummed that there is no way for me to buy a Saturn or even see it in real life due to my regional location but knowing that this is one of the main games it had makes me feel like I'm not losing much. How in the world can you enjoy a high-score centric game without a public arcade set up or at least an online leaderboard. And the actual game part of it is so shallow that there can't be any lasting appeal to it. And just personally I think it looks terrible, the character design and the thrown together landscape are really upsetting.

Nights is a fucking amazing score chasing game. I love so much about this game... It's got some rough edges but, god, most 32-bit games did. Nights, my body is ready. Enter my Xbox.

Posted by Bartman3010

Yeah, you guys totally don't now how to play this game. Admittably, when I first played it, I was immediately dismissive. But now that I figured out how to play it, it's kind of fun. Even though it's real issue is that it's hard to see whats in front of you unless you memorized the stage.

Get ready to read this more than a hundred times in the comments:

You try to get the most points possible, but your main goal is to take out those floating cages that hold onto those shining orbs. To destroy them, you collect 20 of those blue spheres. Then you'll see Bonus Time Start, which doubles your score. The more points you get, the better rank you get for that lap.

So obviously it's a race to get the best score. The items you collect, hoops you fly through add up a link. The bigger the link, the larger your score. Since your score doubles when you destroy that floating cage, it's best to take that out first, then waste time just boosting your score. (If you turn into a kid, you lose all your points.)

It's a game that you need to replay, especially since it's actually really short. One of it's shortcomings is that it does have a little difficulty on explaining itself, especially since it's not clear as to what should be done when you first start playing it. This is an even bigger problem when you fight bosses, since it's hard to tell what needs to be done to beat them.

Give it another try. Seriously. Don't let the weird fanatics bother you with the spiel of "Games as art" since really, it's about having fun. Not to dismiss people who are like that, but above all, you're playing a game, not looking at a still portrait.

Also, those flying creatures represent the A-Life system. That...yeah I can't explain that. I guess they're happy with you if you don't paraloop them or something like that. It's not detrimental to the actual game.

Posted by jackelbeaver

You have to keep getting blue orbs until the arrow to the right of the blue ball turns red. Thats all they're used for, is to break the squid. This is a score getting game where you get to fight a boss afterwords. the balls dont matter in any capacity other than score. The stars are just score, the hoops are too. every item links together.

This makes Bubsy look good.

Brad, the time is extended when you return to base after destroying a Nightmare... you did it one time in the QL

@Bartman3010: you care way to much about nights.

@WeepingWillow: Congratulations.

NIGHTS..... WHAT THE FUCK! I never liked this pile of garbage back in the day.....Good quick look though.

Posted by OpherCyrious

The cover at on this game always made me feel like I was missing out. After seeing it played I'm glad I stuck with my PS1. Nights looks like a case for seizure warnings.

Posted by Bell_End

Eurogamer just gave this a 9/10.

so just goes to show... opinions and stuff!

You care way too much to comment on something that isn't even an obsession of mine.

I only liked Christmas Nights because I got it bundled with my copy of Official Saturn Magazine back in the day and a free game is never frowned upon. It's art style was poor, felt weirdly unresponsive given it was heralding the age of analogue control and crucially wasn't fun.

It's a sign of how much games have come when watching stuff like Nights which gives you so little information on what to do, how to do it and if you are doing it well.

Naw, this isn't a Saturn issue, it's a whimsy issue. It surprises me though because while Jeff hating on whimsy is very normal, Brad following along is odd. There's a man who can appreciate the whimsical. Maybe he's a bit sensitive to feeling that people are judging his performance as a gamer (kinda the GB community's fault =P)

I'd wager Vinny wouldn't let Jeff push him around so much. Surely there's no reason to like Nights other then console war farnboyism! Everyone here who likes it is out of their miiind.

and yeah, Jeff no expert on this game XD

How is that any different from any other QL of a game he doesn't like?

This game has not aged well and does not look like fun. I never liked the flying levels in Spyro games and stuff like that and this game is pretty much all that.

I like the music though. That is some 90s music right there.

Jeff hates Nights the way I hate Halo.

I was just thinking about how much I disliked my Saturn. The idea that there were message boards of rabid fans is nuts.

I went through all of that stuff never connecting to the internet, so I wasn't a crazy person yet.

And Christmas Nights came in a magazine for me.
