Max Payne?

Posted by phantastik

Awesome!

Posted by BeachThunder

Loved Painkiller, not sure I need an HD remake though...

Posted by JayCee

I would think you could kill pain with aspirin or something. Just seems easier than shooting stakes...

The flesh of fallen angels!

they should have had someone who had played the original do this. Brad says he did but he didn't really seem to remember anything, like the tarot cards. Or the shotgun alt-fire.

Posted by coaxmetal

THis is a remake, Drew is right. The story seems like its different, based on that cutscene, but this is the first level of the original. The Painkiller weapon itself seems worse than it did in the original, but it looks cool.

Posted by JoeyRavn

I don't want to sound like that guy, but come on, guys. The icon next to the zero was clearly an armor shard, not health.

Posted by Googly

PAIN!

Posted by coaxmetal

e: oh wait that weapon it gave him wasn't the painkiller, he got that on teh second level. Cool.

Posted by coaxmetal

"How do I pick which one i'm using, maybe the other one is just passive?" (there are 2 cards clearly visible on the screen). Smdh.

Damn Unreal looks good on the PC

@Nation764: Thanks for the info bro. Like it or not, Tricky is here to stay. He adds another dimension to the site that many appreciate. Whether his style is to your tastes or not, is the bashing really necessary?

Get over it guys!

Some things from watching the video:

  • There's a soul counter on the top of the HUD that they missed.
  • The demon mode that activates once you've got 66 souls lasts ~10 seconds.
  • 1 soul = 1 health, not armor.
  • The shotgun has a secondary that freezes enemies and makes it so you can shatter them.
  • The screen faded to black because that's what the witches attack does.
  • This game is a remake that takes 14 levels out of the original game and Battle out of Hell expansion, out of a total of 34 levels from those two games, and all of those levels are packed into the Painkiller: Black Edition (half the price of Hell & Damnation)
  • The top row of tarot cards are the gold cards, gold cards are activated once per level (by default) and are only active then. The bottom row are the black cards and are just passive bonuses throughout the level.
  • You can use the alt fire on the stake gun to launch a grenade, and then hit that grenade with a stake to basically make an exploding stake.

Sigh, next time you do something like this, play more then half the tutorial so you can at least watch the UI. This was painful to sit through...

Painkiller was fucking amazing when it came out. But really Patrick? You confuse health and armour?

Posted by Rainbowkisses

There is a bit too much headbob.

Posted by BeachThunder

Certainly not setting any new standards for HD remakes...aside from cutscenes this seems almost identical.

Posted by MagusMaleficus

Hell is an endless loop of The Carpenters' "Close to You" at high volume. Metal is too good for the Pit.

Posted by civid

This looks amazing, really glad this seems like a pure remake of the original, since it's one of my favorite shooters of all time... So it's kind of a shame this QL is so uninformative and bad. I can understand that the GB crew is super busy this week and so, doesn't really have the time to do proper research on a pretty small game, but Patrick completely fucking disregarding the game at around the 18 minute mark is bullshit. This game really deserves better especially on a site like GB who is pretty great at covering smaller games most of the time.

Man, Brad's sensitivity is high as hell. :S

Thank you. It always baffles me when they are wondering about really obvious stuff. I mean they are game journalists, they should be able to figure shit out more effectively than a regular person, right?

Not a QL for original Painkiller enthusiasts...Jeeeeesus.

Saying it's like Doom also annoys me.

Posted by MEATBALL

Enjoyed this Quick Look, that was some Painkiller ass Painkiller

Posted by Ghost_Cat

Yep, buying it.

Posted by Alexandru

how fucking hard can it be to figure out that the 0 was for armor and the other one for life? What's happening to the giant bomb guys lately?

Posted by Vitor

"The souls are building up your armour"

"Do you have 0 health?"

.... Really guys? Come on. How did you not realise that you'd got the two switched around...

That would mean they would... you know... actually have to take their job seriously and stuff. Some here may find it charming, I find it lazy and half assed.

I had fond memories of Painkiller back in the day.

Posted by RadicalWall

That's health not armor, guys.

Posted by Vod_Crack

How ignorant and uninformed could you be? Absolutely despicable. They couldn't even be bothered doing a quick Wiki fact-check five minutes beforehand.

Posted by BadOrcLDR

I keep hearing them say PainTkiller, making this Quick Look hard to watch.

Posted by Beforet

I am not understanding the anger here. It's not even like they're trashing on the game; they are clearly having a blast with it. Who cares if they miss a UI element or switch health and armor?

Posted by belovedfeedback

Signed up just to say this: Bunnyhopping makes you quicker, have you even played any first-person shooters?

Posted by Rayeth

This had one of the best Time to Brad's ever. The first death is so great.

Posted by Vod_Crack

@Beforet: The amount of factual inaccuracies present here are outstanding. They did a real shitty job. Brad couldn't even put two and two together to work out that this is a remake of the original game. It's called Painkiller: HD for Christ's sake.

Holy shit, halloween seems to be bringing out the biggest assholes in the comments section. Question your life choices, you dicks.

Because it is part of the game?

Them freaking out when in demon mode after counting down to point to it was outright retarded.

This appears to be a remake but not a pure one. There are parts missing and the cut scenes don't have Eve so I'm guessing it's some kind of collection of maps with a new cut scene wrapping or something.

There seems to be more color to the demons too.

According to steam it's 100% uncut modern remake with better polish and what not of the original and battle out of hell but if that were 100% true the story would be in tact and it's not (not that it matters, but just saying).

It also seemed like small parts were missing but that I could be remembering wrong. I know for certain the cut scenes are changed though. You meet eve and some short fat demon dude around the beginning of the game. I think Michael the Archangel gives you a map of hell to take out Satan's Generals and what not.

So, this isn't pure. As for the alt fire on Pain Killer (the gun you picked up with the spinning blade- it is the original primary weapon from the first game and its name is Pain Killer) the alt fire fires that spike out which you can stick to walls and it has the laser behind it which hurts enemies. I don't know why it kills the shield guys in one hit but that's why the spike shoots out, if you shoot it at a wall it sticks there while you hold the button down as long as the gun is lined up.

Another fun thing I remember from Painkiller is when it released it was BROKEN! They fixed it a couple weeks in or so but originally the game wouldn't boot up- on release. I still have 2 copies of Pain Killer from release, you have to patch it to even get it to run.

Crazy. Anyway, I wrote a lot that no one will read. I'm shutting up now =)

you people need to relax.

I used to be pretty good at the multiplayer in this game. To the point I could take games from the top players. Too bad it pretty much died as soon as that one big competition ended. I believe Fatal1ty won it.

I agree, the quick look was fine, people are overreacting. It's just a mindless, dumb fun kind of shooter. Bratrick might have had a hard time figuring out some little details; but if you've never heard of Painkiller before, this video did a good job of letting you know whether or not this is a game you want to play.

Because they're pointing out the obvious mistakes and shortcuts Brad and Patrick took? Not knowing a single thing about a game might be cute the first 3 times or if the game is.. you know, weird. But this? Come on. To me that's being lazy. "- Is this a remake? -eeehhhh I don't know" Oh for fuck's sake. Not knowing even that? Jeeeeeeeesus.

I have one of those bs expansion packs, and I even that half demon disc around from awhile ago. PPL. can Fly haven't been near this game for years.

But I may be getting this at steam today, for it hearkens back to that very first game, one of my old time favorites. I think these guys didn't remember the alt. fire or most anything else about the game, ..Pat had never played it. None of that bothers me, at least I have that last 'whatever' on steam to bring me up to speed a little for myself, which I played half of.

Again, there was real magic in the very first Painkiller, prob replayed that 3 times over the years....I would spend 20.00 to see a glimmer of that come back.

Well unless a Steam sale happens first..heh. lets see if I can hear a few reviews maybe before the full 20.00.

Edited by fox01313

@Zetetic_Elench: Good to see that this is just a patchwork of the original game, will definitely wait on this one for the steam sale. Big fan of the original Painkiller game as it had an old world feel (visual and/or music) that really gave the game a richer atmosphere. Brad & Patrick need to play the original as it did a better job at explaining things & wonderfully huge bosses. And like the Serious Sam games this one also has a weapon puzzle mechanic to it where some enemies are easier to fight with certain weapons so you had to be often going between weapons to deal with everything in the level.

edit-lot of spots in the quick look (with the original painkiller) where alt fire on the painkiller weapon is great to just anchor that to let them all take damage at once when they cross the beam. Hard to tell if that is in this but the weapons visually look good in here.
