I couldn't see the "weird compression artefacting" that they were seeing, due to the weird compression artefacting that has been on Giant Bomb videos recently.

Compression-on-compression violence, when will it end!?

'You are a fiiiilthy lair'.....! Brad tried to pull a quick one again.

What about the PS3 games I own... If I could carry them over I might be interested in a PS 4 purchase. Paying twice for the games, well. This strikes me as odd was of offering older games that I do already own , but I would and do desire a new machine occupying the premium space the PS 3 console did. Not many options for my 3 tier living-room rack.

Also I cannot escape the idea this is a money making plus gap filling approach to the fact that PS4 games are still scarce.

I liked Killzones 2 and 3. I'm so SORRY! :(..

Ehm.. that is exactly what they are doing. Only they probably have servers with Cell-processors running virtualized PS3s with modified firmwares and special video encoding hardware.

Strange how Dan has a completely different opinion of Shadow Fall now that he's at giant bomb, versus his reaction when at gameinformer.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CH5wzsYogYk

How does he go from "constantly raving about it" and "man that was a really good campaign!" to now suddenly being indifferent. "Well... I guess it controls nice" and "I couldn't tell you anything about it." LIke, what's going on here?

Man, I like Dan a lot, but that IS really weird

So this is a service for crazy people. Got it.

Ok hear me out,

What if they expand the catalog to PS1 and PS2 games and maybe play with the pricing a little bit and you have decent internet. You have friends over and you start talking about old games you used to play and how fun it would be to check that out. So everyone is drinking and having a good time then you pop on PSNOW and pay a couple bucks to play one of those games everyone was talking about. You didnt have to go to a store and break the mood or order a copy off Ebay with there being a strong possibility by the time it showed up nobody would even care to play anymore. Its a very specific use case but otherwise incredibly convenient and cheaper.

PS3 already has that. Except you own the titles in question, and at the very most they are $15 each (fairly certain that most of the original Crash Bandicoot games are $7 each). You won't find the most obscure of PS2/PS1 games on PSN, but when it comes to the big hitters of those systems, the selection is varied. They even have God Hand, which is a bit weird. Also, there is almost no reason for them to dump PS2/PS1 games onto PSNow, it's not as though the PS4 is lacking the power to emulate those systems on the software level. If anything, I am very much hoping that Sony decides to introduce PS2/PS1 emulation on the PS4 so it can play those discs, that would be a system seller for me.

Kudos to Sony though for actually making this thing work. It doesn't seem like it would be something I would use ever, but I was expecting mass reports of people being unable to connect or having unplayable games because of either image quality or input lag. It is, at the very worst, an interesting experiment.

Also, I'm fairly certain that the price discrepancy between 4 hrs and 7 days is on purpose, to make the 7 day rental seem better by comparison (they are making you think that you are really getting your money's worth).

To be fair to Guacamelee, it never gets unfairly difficult. There's one platforming segment that's real tough, but it's also optional.

I think Killzone world lore has potential, because who doesnt like Space Nazis? I like Space Nazis.

And i actually like parts of Shadow Fall for what it was, especially the unexpected stealth last mission.

Posted by TheKreep

I absolutely disagree with the assertion that Guacamelee is unfairly difficult!
It gets hard, yeah, but you can definitely learn your way around it if you really want to.

Posted by tourgen

Who is going to use this service? I don't know, I'm just not seeing it working out at those prices. 1/4th or 1/5th the prices maybe.

It's crazy to see time-limited rentals with a network round-trip built into the controls that costs more than a new copy of the game.

Does anyone actually want to play old PS3 games that bad?

Shouldn't this be an Unfinished? Thing's in Beta!

I've been friends with Brad on PSN for like at least 5 years, but I think I've only ever played with him on a game once. He's a much better "game man," when he's not doing a quick look.

@justkamtoo: But then they can't make you rent games for way too much for the majority of them! PS Now is really cool from what I've played on my a little above average connection, but the pricing is just dumb and it's dumb that your previous purchases aren't tied into it. Hopefully they fix things as they go, but as of now it's not getting me to play my PS4 yet again.

@rethla: The PS3 was once backwards compatible with a wide range of PS2 games because they effectively stuck a PS2 inside (emotion engine) and that's why that big ass, lovable thing was $599. You can easily pick up a ps4 and a used ps2 for cheap without breaking bank.

Posted by somekindarobot

Here's my question. I own a bunch of those games digitally already, do I have to pay to access them? Take Deus Ex for example, I bought the directors cut digitally for I think 8 bucks do I have to pay again to play it through PS Now?

Posted by Tunesmith

@somekindarobot: You have to pay for them, maybe it'll change in the future but for now it doesn't take into account previous digital purchases or such.

Posted by buft

I remember getting a free copy of space marine for onlive, game looked truly awful, ran im sure at the lowest possible PC settings and had artifacting so bad everything was a blur when you moved. On the plus side the controls felt responsive enough.

It isn't something I would go back and spend more money on

Yeah, "meme-y" is fine if that's what he meant for the style. I thought he just called meme as "mee mee".

I must still be living in the past. I still think Killzone 3 looks great ┐( ̄ヮ ̄)┌

Posted by whatisdelicious

It's still rough on pricing and selection, but those will inevitably get better. The tech is the important part, and it seems like it works. So that's awesome.

@danryckert casting some harsh aspersions on Guacamelee is less awesome. That game was great. I loved how hard it got by the end. It didn't feel "unfair." It just felt demanding in a really cool way that required practice, and once you were nailing super complex stuff, you felt like such a badass. Great fucking game. Opinions are opinions, but I think he's off on that one and I'd encourage everyone to try it for themselves. (Not necessarily for PS Now's prices though.)

Edited by whatisdelicious

@vitor: @craftyskills: Or maybe he just has had months to reflect on it and get over the initial hype and realize that, actually, just like basically every other launch game this generation, it was actually kind of crappy? Nice-looking game, but I really did not like that campaign.

@somekindarobot said:

At least for now, yeah, pretty sure. It's kind of a bummer because I don't think there's any real way for them to do the disc authentication stuff everyone wants properly, but if a game is tied to your account already, I don't understand why you wouldn't be able to get a reduced price. It should still definitely cost money because there's still significant R&D and server costs for them to let you play that game through PS Now, but a reduced cost would go a long way.

Or they could just figure out a proper subscription price and just do it that way, because fucking come on.

Posted by radioactivez0r

@brad, please ignore Dan on Guacamelee and finish it. It's really a fantastic experience; yes the dimension switching platforming can get a bit hairy but it's certainly not unfair. I was reminded a lot of Prince of Persia Forgotten Sands and switching between ice and water.

Killzone: Shadow Fall was HEY LINKMAKER IN THE MESSAGE EDITOR STOP BLEEDING INTO THE TEXT I WANT TO WRITE RANDOMLY JESUS

Oh I had to make a fat ass linebreak for no reason. KZ:SF kinda lost a lot of "wow" and "whoa" even graphically as we got closer to Infamous and so on. While a damn lot better than battlecods the chapter 9 boss area and boss was the absolute worst and brought it down, and it felt kinda "old" in not fully good ways. It did not age well in its barely ten months out. Even I changed my feelings on it. The MP is super clean and stable and feels great with the gunplay but it's just dull and stale while BF4 MP lets you goof off with physics and vehicles wonderfully, finally, it took them seven months to give it stable servers.

Of course observant types turn around opinions on games over time. Games age, some better than others, and some hit every rotten branch of the tree as they age. If Watch Dogs had gotten its planned November release it would not have become as good of a seller, but it would have aged "better" and felt "better" than it did by far.

To be honest I'd be pretty surprised if they're doing virtualization at all. I don't know of any commercial product that does Cell virtualization (though please correct me if I'm wrong), and considering the R&D necessary to develop that, it would probably be much much cheaper to make a buttload of rackmountable PS3s and hook them up to a shared storage system.

I think this is why they don't have a $1 4 hour option at launch. Maybe they don't have the hardware in place to handle massive amounts of people just paying $1 to check out this Now thing everyone's talking about. "Waiting for session to become available" would just absolutely kill any interest anyone had in Now, especially with them having payed for 4 hours.

Ok, hear me out. How many "maybes" and "ifs" did you have to throw in there just to make a reasonable argument? Seems like it would be a lot easier for a machine that can read Blu-Ray discs and process insane amounts of information to run the same video games the company's very own predecessor machines could.

And it's not even like this is an issue with cartridges, either. I will go to the grave cursing every console that doesn't include backwards compatibility but still wants to move everyone on to the "next gen" before they're ready.

I was not trying to make an argument im not trying to argue about anything i was just offering a scenario where PSnow can be considered convenient and actually less expensive. I still fully believe PSnow will at one point get it right because this new Sony is actually listening to complaints. I just think it is silly to poo poo such an amazing technology and not just be amazed that we can just stream a game to our tv in a very short amount of time. Also no one is forcing you to sell your ps3

I have an PSX, PS2 and PS3 in my closet.

I much rather pick up an PS4 for $500 where i can play all my playstation games. This nonsens Gaikai delay will never do when want to revisit old belowed acton games. Some games from the PSX era are hard to play with the delay on mordern LCD screens and the wireless controller delay, it would be an absolute disaster with Gaikai.

Isn't it a lot more likely that he was into it at the time because it was flashy, but that long term it didn't make much of a lasting impression?

Like, I was raving about Asura's Wrath for a while after I played it, but now if you asked me about it I would barely remember the plot, and I wouldn't want to play it again except to show it to somebody.

No, sticking to your convictions is key to being a dumbass. Your opinion of something can change. There's nothing wrong with that. There is something wrong with pretending like it didn't though.

I'll jump in on this business once Twisted Metal 1 and 2 are available.

Posted by AV_Gamer

When God of War III, Metal Gear Solid 4, the Uncharted games, and the Final Fantasy XIII games become available, I'll get the service. Until then, no sell.

Posted by JosephKnows

Also sounding off on how it's strange to hear Dan say that Guacamelee becomes unfairly hard. It definitely required some precision in the platforming, but not once did it get to a point that it was just super frustrating. The controls were never an issue, and yeah, as one guy already said, actually finishing a hard platforming section felt super satisfying, especially when you have to string together all the moves you've learned. I don't even play that many platformers, and I still enjoyed the hell out of that game. The only really tough platforming bits was for an optional treasure.

As for the actual Playstation Now service, I'm pretty impressed by what was shown here. Of course, I'm not going to bother with it considering the shitty Internet speeds here in the Philippines. Well, no, I'll take a stab at it, but I'm not putting too much hope into that.

Thanks for the video dudes, this actually impressed me more than I expected... I sold my PS3 and now have a PS4, so I would totally see myself using this service, providing the prices are reasonable and it comes out in Australia.

Wow...How can you say that Dan! Guacamelee didn't get insanely hard, me and my girlfriend played it no problem, and I even made sure we both completed the platforming sections and the timing was still manageable. Perhaps you played on Hard? but at that point you've played a lot of Guacamelee.

Posted by abrasion

I honestly don't understand Brads comment about Killzone 3, seeing it and understand just how much better Shadowfall looks? KZ3 looks pretty damn good in that video considering it's an 8 year old console.
