Quick Look: Ridiculous Fishing

Any self-respecting angler should know how to correctly attach a lure, set a hook, and grease a minigun.

I haven't been this hooked (HA!) on a mobile game for quite a while. It's pretty great, a nice balance between a quick fix and a pretty solid upgrade system. And looks stylish and funny, too.

Edited by Crelio

Something something ridiculous something interesting point something etc.....whatev

Edited by voltan

The iOS quick looks just make me sad. And if you are taking this mobile gaming route you should be ready to make quick looks of Android games too.

Edited by probablytuna

It is ridiculous that this isn't on Android.

I love this game so much.

Android could be a little trickier because HDCP is jammed into most top-devices HDMI outputs along with strange combinations of resolutions and frequencies (25hz.. wtf)

Android is actually a little trickier because nobody owns Android anything because group pressure. Look at any university lecture from the professor's position, never anything but a LED lit apple logotype shining your way.

:/

There was a game just like this a couple years ago that required you to slice the fish after you flung them up in the air. The same gas and depth mechanics. Wonder if it's the same company or a clone?

Posted by voltan

@somejerk: Nobody owns Android but it's the market leader.

Edited by Crelio

@kingopork: Maybe its called ninja fishing? *wink, wink*

Posted by fartGOD666

It's worth noting that the composer and sound designer is Eirik Suhrke of Hotline Miami and Spelunky fame.

Edited by C418

@crelio: @kingopork: Yes, that's a clone that has been religously ripping of Radical Fishing. The guys behind it are pretty disgusting.

Ridiculous Fishing mostly came out this late because of that horrible clone.

Edited by Humanity

@c418: I just got ninja fishing on my phone and it's alright. They will get more exposure cause it's free. I wouldn't mind trying Ridiculous Fishing but if I can try a free alternative that is basically the exact same thing, hey, for 2 min when I'll play it in the bathroom it's enough.

Posted by JacDG

Couldn't find it on the android store, which makes me sad because it looks really fun and addicting, nice toilet game. Wish more devs would/could focus more on Android devices..

That's not true at all. Android devices are far more popular due in large part to their financial ease of access. You can get a totally capable $99 smartphone and a no-contract plan on Virgin for $35 a month. Here's just a random search result I found on Google: http://gizmodo.com/5977625/android-is-popular-because-its-cheap-not-because-its-good

This is global, Apple has about 35% in the US.

Seems interesting though after seeing the QL, it looks like it might be rather hard to hit the smaller target on the fish with just about any gun. Better just blow them all up with a bazooka as at least you'll hit something with that.

Am I the only one who remembers playing this same game 10 years ago.. but only as a flash.. Angry Birds was the same thing. I really need to think about a career change. So much money to be made copying old flash games on Apple devices.

Why?

Edited by Wraxend

Bought this game yesterday after seeing it on the wednesday show and I love it.

Posted by depecheload

I wish games like this would come out on the Android. I get why they don't (horribly fragmented OS) but it bums me out. I'm never buying an iPad and would love to play this on my tablet.

Edited by Supergooder

One of the greats. Definitely a fishing game. I love a good chainsaw lure.

@abendlaender: Mobile(tablets, phones) gaming is not why I like or come to Giant Bomb. If I want that coverage there are other sites. I can always skip quick looks but when it's polluting podcast it's annoying.

Well, too bad. You can't stand the ~10 minutes they spend on iOS games on the bombcast? I feel for you.
I personally see not much difference between games like Year Walk or The Room and most Indie games I play on my PC. This game however seems incredibly boring and uninteresting.

Thanks dude! But still, it's a shame that android versions of games are usually an afterthought, some games aren't out on android till weeks or even months later, which sucks for "multiplayer"/social focused experiences.

Edited by smellylettuce

I liked this game also when it was called ninja fishing...

If the games are interesting (Like Year Walk), it isn't polluting anything. Just because you don't own the platform doesn't mean they shouldn't cover it. Mobile developers put a lot of focus on iOS and there are a few really great games on the platform.

@smellylettuce: They explain the similarity. Ninja Fishing ripped off the original Ridiculous Fishing flash game, causing this games development to stop for a year. Ninja Fishing, like all bullshit clones, doesn't deserve to be played.

Posted by twinight

It's worth noting (and I'm not sure why @patrickklepek didn't mention it) that the game has no in-app purchasing whatsoever.

Posted by SomeJerk

To reply to a bunch of people, what I mean is:
None of these hip IT people own Android devices

And that sucks.

As much as I dislike the Apple fandom, you can have a Android phone that is really not a smart phone at all, maybe a 2 inch screen with some colour. So I wouldn't pay attention to that chart for regarding smartphones that can play games.

@mariachimacabre: I don't own PS3 or WiiU and I still enjoy quick looks and discussion. Maybe I just hate Apple. Can't say.

Jesus Christ, watch the QL. They explain that Ninja Fishing ripped off the original Ridiculous Fishing flash game.

I'm not into Patrick's indie adventures, but the name alone made me watch this QL. I'm glad I did.

Posted by Dan_CiTi

Good game.

Posted by jakkblades

I don't criticize Patrick very much but I wish he wouldn't throw out the appellation "gorgeous" so often. If you call every pretty girl gorgeous, the really gorgeous one isn't going to believe you when you say it.

Posted by secretbrock

While I like the aesthetic of this game much more than Ninja Fishing, I find the slashing fish mechanic a bit more fun than tapping to use the gun.

Edited by Fawkes

Seems pretty dumb for anyone to care about "ripping off" games like this, because the "original" is usually also a rip off of some other game. There's nothing in this game I can see from this quick look that I haven't seen before.

Edited by Ketchupp

This game looks boring.

The vast majority of mobile games these days are nothing but reskinned flash games and that's why i couldn't care any less about any of them. I've played this game for a bit but they're really nothing more than slight distractions that don't get my admiration.

Yah, they quicklook them because all of them probably have an Iphone, and also a lot of the apps such as Angry birds, are add supported on Android, but paid for on Apple.

I would like them to do quicklooks of Android games, or at least mention if it is available on Android too. But it is understandable why they don't.

Didn't Will Smith like Android phones? Perhaps they could outsource some games to him, and have him on one a month, and do cross content synergy. Patrick, or Brad play the Apple version and Will or Norm plays the Android version and they argue/compare/play starcraft about the differences.

You pretty much just described the Seinfeld episode with that one guy who keeps saying "breath-taking".

Posted by Midjet

This is probably a question that I'm going to be asking more often: How can I get this on PC? Looks like a fun little game.

Edited by bassman2112

@this_is_not_my_face: I'm guessing you didn't know that game is a clone of this one's original flash game.

Android's strength is also its weakness; it's everywhere. I'm sure you'll find an android toaster, toast tweet™ included, if you look hard enough.

Posted by happymeowmeow

Right, this was the fishing game that got ripped off while it was still being developed, I thought it sounded familiar.
