Wake me up when Child of Eden comes out.

looks so booooring and slow

Posted by BeautifulSpaceCowboy

I like the visuals enough, but it just looks slow, even on the hardcore mode.

I don't think Atari or any game developer would look too kindly towards GiantBomb if they critiqued their game before it was actually released, let alone right in front of them while they are taking time out of their day to demo it for the site.  It's just bad taste to do that despite the game being quality or not.

Yeah, I don't really see where all the hate is coming from.  They said upfront that the game was being demoed on Easy difficulty, and I don't know whether half the people in here complaining about the art style are actually expressing their own opinion or parroting that old "Anime is for jerks" meme.
You're missing the point.
A) PSN / XBLA games while smaller in scope, should be compared to their big, full price retail brethren.
B) The first level in a game should immediately throw the unsuspecting player into a gigantic wave of enemies. A good difficulty curve is a myth.

I don't think he was bashing the game. He was saying that he wanted it all the way up on difficulty cause he wanted to see an immediate crash and burn. Just because he didn't see that doesn't mean he was knocking the game...

@Gaff:  So you're saying the game is bad because it doesn't chop your balls off in the first two minutes?

Wat.

It looks alright for those who enjoy rail shooters - and plenty of people do. But it has almost nothing to do with Yar's Revenge. I mean, come on, aside from the shield effect, it shares nothing with the original game. Which is a good thing, as the original Yar's Revenge, like almost any game made before the 90's.... frankly sucked.

I have no problems with them making this kind of game, and I can imagine how many people would like it, but tacking on "Yar's Revenge" in a very shakey bid to attract attention looks suspicious. Like they're afraid the game can't stand on it's own, so it needs to try to be part of a franchise (and a franchise that didn't even EXIST until this game came along and MADE Yar's Revenge a "franchise).

This actually seems very interesting...

Posted by Driadon

:( Why the hate? I admit, I too would prefer some extra crazy flair, but that said the game itself looks more fun then people are giving it credit.

Posted by Gaff
@Hailinel Yep, that's what us hardcore gamers want. Derp.

Also, C: sarcasm doesn't travel well in text form.
Posted by picklecannon

This looks pretty good, hoping for a $10 release.

Posted by patrick

Game itself looks nice. Probably shouldn't have started with the cutscene, anime is a bit more subjective than pretty graphics.

Do games like this and Star Fox really get genre lumped together with proper onrail shooters like Dead Space Extraction and Time Crisis? Seems like there should be something to differentiate the two types.

Posted by Alphazero

Makes me want to play Rez. And Ikaruga.

Posted by Bones8677

Welp...that's a rail shooter alright.

Posted by eloj

I don't know this genre, but watching this it feels like something is missing. Something important.

lol i hear ya on that one.

Looks nice but it just doesn't look as fun as something like S&P.

This may be the first Quick Look I can't watch all the way through. At 6 minutes in, I'm callin' it!

Posted by supermike6

Should've called it The Yar's Revenge.

Yaaaarrrrrrrrrr.

Im glad im not the only one, there was just something..missing, idk. The game needs something to be interesting, it just seems way too slow.

Looks pretty relaxing to be honest and the GitS style suits it well.

Does seem a little on the slow side though and with no branching paths or hardcore / chill-out mode there's not much to it beyond score attack.

Interesting to read Howard Scott Warshaw in a recent GamesTM about how he learnt about the new game from a trade press release.

damn it Ryan you didn't ask if it will be in 3D!!

Remember Bayonetta's Space Harrier homage? Now THAT's a great rail shooter. This game? Not even close.

Posted by LLJK_Jasta

I adore games like this and haven't played one in a long time, so I am very interested in it. I just hope it turns out as cool as it looks. ^_^

Posted by Scrumdidlyumptious

Something about the music and sound in this game makes it seem really dull, but I'm still interested.

Posted by CitizenJP

Awesome. Looks fun and the music is pretty cool!

This just seems like a company who wanted to make an on-rails shooter and tacked on the name of a classic video game to get more attention. This game looks as if it really doesn't share very much in common with the gameplay of the original. That's what made Yars' Revenge unique at the time...it's gameplay. Now it's just going to be another on-rails shooter. A genre that's been done many times before.

Posted by retsub101

Panzer Dragoon anyone?

Posted by TideGear

I'm a big fan of the original Yars' Revenge.

I can hang with this new game's art style and story direction, but the gameplay seems to share nothing of substance in common with the original. I would have much preferred a Namco Generations-like take on the original.

Posted by Bengosha

Geez. what a bunch of negative Nancies. I think it looks cool and the  originality of the art style is a real turn on.

Edited by FirstBossCutman

"We didn't want to simply make a Yars' Revenge HD Remix" What a fucking moron. This guy clearly doesn't know his target audience.
Also, not being sarcastic when I say this, it's 2011. I need voice acting in my on-rails shooter, not text. I can't read text and pin point enemies at the same time. C'mon, Starfox 64 had voice acting, it's simply inexcusable for there NOT to be voice acting in an on-rails shooter.

Posted by notha

had to stop that one 5 minutes in, so bland.

I'd much rather play something like Yeaargh's Revenge about a dead zombie parrot traveling through dimensions to find another pirate's shoulder to perch on. Sorry for the lame joke, folks.

Posted by Brodehouse

Why does she talk like a hanar?

Posted by JJOR64

Seems OK.

@JJOR64:
watched about 5 minutes of the QL before i exited the video and stated to myself  "this looks fucking terrible".
Never before have i closed a quicklook prematurely, but this was just one of those games that made me sick from just looking at it.

who the fuck on earth thinks that on-rails shooters are doing well? As a company, who made the decision that "we should make one of those on-rail shooters, THOSE ARE BOOMING!"?

Game will bomb, studio will probably close down.

Also, yes, this is harsh. It's not usually how i am, but ignorance on behalf of an entire company sort of frustrates me. Anime games don't sell well, on-rail shooters don't sell well, so why not combine both and make it super generic while you're at it?

There's definitely a Pirate Parrot game in that pitch that I would play.

Parrot with an eyepatch and tiny beak-wielded cutlass collecting pieces of eight as he tries to find his kidnapped ship captain!

Looks kinda meh to be honest.

"This one does not need armor to fight."
What is this, Wolf's Rain?

Posted by McGhee

I love how Ryan said that easy difficulty felt a little slow and when they go into "hardcore mode" it only drops the health and removes the shield. It didn't add more enemies for the frantic feel you would hope for, but it does make the end of the QL a little awkward. Seems pretty cheap and lazy to not add more enemies in a game like this.

Posted by Marz

makes me want a next generation Starfox game for some reason.

Posted by dcgc

Wow, this is actually not that great. Not interested in the game anymore.

Posted by ArbitraryWater

Soo... it's a rail shooter. With generic anime art. Way to go guys.

I was also thinking about Star Fox. Too bad this looks kinda bad.
Posted by DeadDorf

Yikes, ex-Pandemic developers this is the wrong direction of quality you want!

Posted by Turambar

I like the art style, but gameplay is pretty eh....

Posted by EndoftheLine

You know, I'm willing to give this game a benefit of a doubt. Something about it reminds me a lot of Panzer Dragoon, so I think I will give this one a shot.
