Frog Fractions 2 like like

I picked this up when it was $5. Boy was I surprised when I realized that there was no vertical look. I like the idea of the game, but it's not very fun.

Watching it being played makes me want to give it another shot.

I really wanted to dislike this game, because the presentation looked like crap. But... I'm starting to turn around on this...

does moving the mouse up/down move you forwards/backwards?

I actually think this looks really cool. But honestly it just makes me want to play Doom 1&2.

I'm already screaming at my monitor as Jeff skipped the rocket launcher in the first level. Gah.

Other than that, this seems awesome. :D

Does this have controller support?

never mind brad answered this a bit after I typed the question.

Visually this looks like trash. Sometimes I think people these days give indie games a pass simply because they are made by a small team.

That is one high boot.

THANK YOU!!!!! I so agree! Tired of crappy looking games getting passes, because some person living in his mom's basement made it.

Can't watch this right now, but I hope they like it. The demo gave me a couple of chuckles.

"Shitlike"

There's already a great FPS Roguelike. It's called Tower of Guns, it plays a lot like Quake 2, it's tough as nails, it looks nice enough, and it's super charming with its dialogue and Hugbots. Check it out!

Posted by 49th

I think this looks really ugly. Not because it's sprite based but because the textures are terrible. It would be cool to see a game in this style with really nice visuals.

Posted by Spwn

The levels seem incredibly monotonous and the fact that the music doesn't loop just makes me cringe at this game.

This one got a pass because it's meant to evoke Doom in its presentation. I think it pulls that off reasonably well. The sound design is the thing that doesn't fit. The gun/enemy sounds are nowhere near Doom quality. Also the fact that the music doesn't loop is a dumb oversight.

Posted by notdavid

This game looks bad in a bad way and not in a good way.

Was Tower of Guns good? The idea of a rougelikelike shooter is appealing, but this looks like hot garbage.

Agreed. Nothing wrong with a simple 8 or 16 bit look (i prefer 16bit look over 8) but this just looks awful. Look at the hand holding the gun, it's not even holding it really. Looks like a 9 year old drew that. Sounds aren't great either.

Edited by Ap2000

Wow, this presentation is absolutely attrocious. Even most flash games look better.

This shit would have been freeware even 15 years ago.

No.

Absolutely no.

There are over a decade old Doom mods that look several times better than this... thing.

The visuals remind me of Chex Quest.

That doesn't make them good, but I am amused by it.

I think I'd rather play DOOM with some insane WADs. I prefer the way that game looks and moves anyway, and it's a hell of a lot cheaper and more expandable nowadays.

I guess it's mostly that the roguelike element just isn't doing much for me here, since that's pretty much the differentiating factor here.

Also yeah, this game kind of looks like garbage stylistically, especially compared to what it's trying to mimic, what with the weird seams in the floor tiling and the desaturated primary colors.

Game looks fun

Programmer did the artwork. Hahahah yeah that was obvious. Should make friends with a decent artist.

I think this looks fun enough, but, yeah, there are actually random map generators available for Doom if you want to play through entirely randomly generated content, a couple of those map generators do a pretty alright job too - but there is already enough user created content for the game available on the major Doom community sites to last you a lifetime.

I spent this whole Quick Look waiting for a Flemoid to show up. Neat enough idea, but oh man those graphics.

Never let programmer art happen to you kids. I'm sorry but man the art is awful practically top to bottom.

Although arguably the biggest issue I have is the fact that the gun isn't in the middle of the screen. Why take it so far but not all the way? As it is the gun takes up way too much of the screen and sometimes at an awkward angle which makes me wonder why if there is no mouselook.

I'm so glad they decided to cover this!

This looks a lot like some old shooter I forgot the name of. It was kinda like Blood or Duke 3d, but had this comic style, I think before JGR invented cel shading.

Posted by steevl

Eh, seems OK. Not a fan of the art style, and I think it's the look of the windows that really bothers me here.

Posted by Veektarius

I'm not going to disagree that this game looks and sound awful, but the gameplay looks really squirrelly too. You step around a corner and a million monsters charge you at light speed? Fun.

You might be thinking of XIII.

For some reason this video just made me go watch the Rogue Warrior quick look again, I guess what I'm saying, is that if this game is gonna put Rogue twice in its title, then I feel perfectly justified in saying that it needs some Mickey Rourke obscenities in it.

Posted by hanner74

This looks totally great!

Posted by mithical

The visuals, sound, and level maps leaning too heavily on corridors all turn me off of this game.

Looks like it's a bit more inspired by Duke 3D than Doom, and Duke started that whole "weapon offset to the side" craze. I always hated it, so, yeah, I'd want the guns centered too.

I hope it's a roguelike in the sense that there's support for user created tile sets, i.e. texture and sprite replacements, I'm sure it wouldn't take too long before some fans would make graphics way superior to the current stuff for this if that's the case.

Are you thinking of ZPC, the video game version of a KMFDM album cover?

Edited by LarryDavis

@euandewar: ... No, XIII wasn't like Duke or Blood.

@white_lando: Yup, this is it! No wonder I couldn't remember that name. I remember it being pretty alright.

After watching this video, I was wrong, ZPC actually looks much better than Rogue Shooter. :V

To me, the art is perfect. It really does feel like a new Blake Stone game appeared out of nowhere 20 years late.

Posted by Rotnac

I really love the concept but the visuals, SFX, and music are extremely awful. No, it does not evoke a Doom or Doom-era shooter. If you've played on Zandronum you would already know there are tons of original Doom mods with original music and art that are presented more faithfully to that era.

Posted by R3DT1D3

As someone who plays BF and Dota all the time, I was losing it whenever Jeff didn't look at his minimap and got attacked from behind.

Posted by august

I'm someone who will still get down on some Blake Stone or some Doom (Zandronum specifically) and I love the idea of this game but the art is just way too rough for me to spend any time with.

Posted by WorldDude

Man, even Wolfenstein 3D looks better than this garbage.

The more annoying part for me is the ironic appreciation of bad graphics. 90s shooters looked like shit (by modern standards) because they had to. There would never have been sprites in Doom if PCs were twice as powerful at the time.

I'm sick of indies coming back to the same "hey, this looks like those SNES games you have childhood nostalgia for!" well, but pixel art has at least aged pretty well and can look great by modern standards when done right. Sprites in 3D games were never anything other than a crappy-looking compromise for technical limitations. I played Doom when it was new and I have nostalgia for it, but I don't want anything to look like it now. What's next: pseudo-Mode 7 racing games?

Posted by GeneralBison

The idea is neat and the game play looks fun but this is by far the ugliest game I have seen in a very long time =_=

Nothing about the visual style is appealing to me, I know I should be able to get past it but I just can't.
