WORST. QUICKLOOK. EVER!

I've been dreaming of a game like this for years and the closest we've come this decade has been Castle Crashers (Which was a damn fine game mind you).
This game far surpasses that and tickles every nostalgic nerdbone in my body at the same time!

So why is it the worst quick look ever? Because they showed a boring-ass game with boring-ass game mechanics hoping its nods to gaming's yesteryear is enough to sell, and then called it on being a boring-ass game?

Anywho, I saw the movie last night. It's actually very good. This game, however, leaves much to be desired.

@Atomsk: He doesn't like this type of game and when you played the games that a newer game rips off and doesn't do to much to differentiate itself from this game  then it tends to just be boring to play the same game.  If you have never played those older games your interest in the new rip offs gets a bit higher cause it's new to you.
Posted by TeflonBilly
@Axelhander: It was just such a complete downer. They never harped on it being a "boring-ass game" as far as I noticed. Jeff was just being a negative Nancy about everything in this game without having anything really bad to say about it.

If they'd just done something as little as given Brad the second controller and played it co-op it'd be a way more entertaining experience. It's not like the QLs are supposed to be in depth reviews. Sure we watch them to get an impression of the games, but I mostly wanna hear the Giant Bomb guys have fun with what they're playing during these. Wether the game is good or not. Just look at shitfests like Tournament Of Legends or Darkest Of Days, those were on par with QLs of games like SSFIV and NSMB Wii entertainment-wise.
This was just depressing.

Really enjoyed the books and the movies, suspect playing this with my Pilgrim appreciating friends will be a good time. The wife doesn't mind this stuff either. Day one confirmed.

@TeflonBilly:  yeah it's just....man...this might be the worst QL ever...

I also feel like it's worth pointing out that thinking that Scott is kind of a douche is actually part of the story. Crazy, I know!

I'm gonna chime in and say, as a usual fan of Jeff Gerstmann's ideas, that maybe he should try a little harder when making fun of things which are trying to be fun.

Hey, it's a game about a comic which is about indie culture which references games.  If that's not your thing, maybe you could not review and not look like such a clueless asshole when you're going through.  "Having no real familiarity with the property--" well then, educate yourself before you assume to put your voice on the internet. There is no law about the genre of "brawler" or about any of the specific references so far - and for the ones that are in the air, the creators have specifically went out of their way to seek approval from folks like Miyamoto, etc. to make those references okay.  So maybe don't get so uptight about the movie you think is too mainstream for you? Because that shouldn't even exist alongside a game that's $10.  There's nothing wrong with this game, and your post-post-modern cred looks retarded.  Try harder next time, and maybe you'll do better at journalism than the small sites who actually think when they talk.

Just saw the movie and think Edgar Wright knows nothing about what makes gaming cool! Was tempted to walk out 3 times but the fact that I'm a film buff and paid $18 for my ticket I sucked it up just so I could say I saw it.

Posted by TeflonBilly
@PuckGoodfellow: Whoa, simmer down there hoss.
You shouldn't have to read through six books to comment on a game adaptation.
I'm just suggesting going into a QL with the intention of having fun with it.

The vibe towards the game in this one was just really negative from the word go.
Posted by Ignor

I am indifferent to this game.
Doesn't look horrible, doesn't look like it's for me.

Edited by Baconator

Jeff's hating on Scott Pilgrim? I fell 0_o is the appropriate meta-comment to that. Ugh, I just annoyed the hell out of myself with that.

I saw the movie and liked almost all of it. But tell me, virtual person, what makes gaming cool? Also, where the fuck did you go to pay 18 dollars for a ticket? I paid 9.50 at the most expensive theatre in north Seattle.

Waitaminute. The books are great. The movie was about an 8/10. I think the game looks fun, too.  Why is Jeff being a complete dick in this quick look. And Brad, wtf? For a bunch of guys who pride themselves on video-game references and dork-itude, to come across a series that shares that sense of pride and dorkiness and to just bash the series because of not knowing the comics or anything about it bakes my noodle. Is this just ad-fatigue speaking? It's PoMo and very meta-textual, sure. But those elements are more of a reveal about what kind of a person Scott is than just a gimmick.

I'm getting more and more irritated that game reviewers/journalists (whatever you want to call'em) don't do their research on their own topic.

It's also funny they should mention the "shadow version of Scott Pilgrim."

Crap movie. Crap video game.  What an overhyped shitty movie. I
can't believe anyone wants to watch some random dork in a movie.
It doesn't even look funny.  I look at the movie the first thing that
comes to mind: who the fuck is Scott Pilgrim & why the fuck is
he in cinema at all?!   Boggles the mind.

  • the comic series is charming - everybody should check it out
  • the GB Duders should have read the comics before playing = fail.
  • nothing wrong with the game at all
  • don't mistake the movie industry trying to cash in with the original material made by a broke dude.
  • the dollars $$ in this game are Canadian $

I want to know how you, as an apparent film buff, got ripped off so badly. Where the hell did you pay that kind of money? I saw a midnight premier for 10 bucks at a Theater Grill.

You were tempted to walk out three times? Sounds pretty damn pretentious to me. What does make gaming cool, oh guru?

I FUCKING LOVE RIVER CITY RANSOM
ESPECIALLY THAT PART WHERE YOU GET THE COMBINATION ATTACK BETWEEN YOU AND YOUR BLUE SHIRT BUDDY AND HE GOES SPINNING LIKE A TORPEDO AND HE BOUNCES ALL OVER THE SCREEN OR MAYBE THAT WAS AN ENEMY BOSS ATTACK ANYWAYS I FUCKING LOVE RIVER CITY RANSOM

I disagree. They presented it like they would any Quick Look. They are playing through it pointing out what they notice trying to be non-opinionated about it. They aren't for it or against it. Jeff didn't talk down on it, he just pointed out a lot of the resemblance's between it and River City Ransom. I think when it was realized how similar to River City this is, Jeff was less interested because this isn't really a new game, just a new take on an old classic.   "

I think jeff is many things great reviewers sure, funny guy yes, great guy to grab a beer with no doubt but  non-opinionated is not one of them. No i don't think this is how they present most quicklook most of them are fun to watch in which even if the game was bad or not of their taste they had fun doing it. This just seem like a big downer no matter if you like or don't like the game. I will find it hard for anyone to recomment this quicklook to anyone to watch.

@Earthborn:  While watching the quicklook, I came to the realization of why it may be that so many people, like Brad and especially Jeff, seem to be put off by Scott Pilgrim and it's style (note, I'm saying this with no opinion on Scoot Pilgrim, it's fans, or anything like that. I do admit that this might be why things l ignore Scott Pilgrim since the movie).  A lot of the people that take pride in calling themselves "gamers" and knowing about game culture are, for whatever reason, pretty cynical (like Jeff). Deep down, they like how their culture is critical, cast out and exclusive; they like how being a gamer is not cool at all, how its the fashion of not having a fashion. And so when they see things like the Scott Pilgrim film/game with its hipster-nerd style, they get put off by it. By turning gaming into something so obtuse and so "look how into video games we are", things like Scott Pilgrim seem to leave out the people that feel like gaming is their cross to bear. In short, it has too much street cred after the movie and comes off as pandering. Needs more spite and to be released in a package developed by XSeed :-p

Jeff is straight hating on this game! What gives, Jeff? Embrace the nostalgia and the great soundtrack!

Edited by bearbytes

This game is pretty good, bought it a few days ago to play with my girlfriend.  I really like the visuals and the music, and even though the game starts off kinda slow game play wise, it gets better as you learn more moves and stuff.

I've always been a fan of brawlers, but I think playing one single player is kind of missing the point. These games are best played with at least one other person. I love to break out my SNES and play through Turtles in Time with a friend, but I would never play it alone, it's just not as fun.

Most people who throw around the word 'hipster' don't know what it means, so they're trash. And the rest of the people who do know what it means are trash because they actually took the time to google it.

I myself read through 15 pages of comments and I still don't know what the fuck the word means, but I will not admit defeat by googling it.

And yes, this is an overgeneralization. People sometimes do that for comedic or dramatic effect. Oh great, now the joke's spoiled because you didn't get it right away, and now don't have the chance to.

I really shouldn't be posting comments when I'm this tired.

Anyways, I really like the art. I guess the best word to describe it is 'cute'. I do enjoy the female models from what I've seen of the QL. Not sure exactly how long this game could really last as entertainment. It just generally doesn't look enthralling. I wouldn't call the video game references clever. Blatant would be a better word. Not saying that's necessarily a bad thing, though. I guess it can really be hit-or-miss depending on the person. For instance, the world map I recognized right away as looking like Super Mario World. I enjoyed it. The question-mark boxes, though, weren't really all that special to me.

"Hipster" is the new "gay".  It doesn't mean anything, but is a very vague term for "someone I don't like", without exhibiting the knowledge or vocabulary to express why.  On most occasions it's something very non-tactile, like seeing someone and saying "I don't like his face!" but not being able to describe what's so wrong about it.  In many cases, on this site and on everywhere else that holds the anonymity of the internet, seeing a "cool kid" (much less a cool kid who likes the same things you do!) brings up bad memories of being beaten up for lunch money and being shot down by the prettiest girl in favor of another fellow more similar to characters in this series.  There are logical and well thought-out complaints against Scott Pilgrim, but 99% of what you'll find on the internet aren't those.  It creates, in all seriousness, a reflection of inner fears.  "Hipster" is the term used by scared little boys to cover that whole range of emotion.

Wow, this is such a dire quicklook. I've never read the graphic novels and haven't seen the movie, but it immediately bothered me that the tone was so dour and negative. It looks cute and fun and in no way seems to have earned such ire. I had to stop watching at 8 minutes.

Edited by ratzombie
@ultrapeanut: I was thinking the same thing, I fail to see what exactly there is to hate about this game... maybe because the series is somewhat popular among the yoots? The GB crew seem to like to display their immediate dislike for anything remotely "mainstream."

I have not read the comics, nor have I seen the movie but being a big River City Ransom fan this game looks fucking great to me. And hey, it's a licensed game that doesn't suck balls... let us rejoice!

Loved the movie, this looks awesome.

This game looks great. I'm definitely happier with this than with the movie.

The comic is great, the movie is good, but this...this is just trying too hard. again, Ubisoft. -_- '

I got the game today, played through the first level with my room mate. Its a great game! Yes it is like river city ransom in game play....but that is not a bad thing. The controls are fun, and the game is not super easy. And you can tell that there was work put into the game. The animations are really great. Music is fun and upbeat. The over lay of video games, is not that bad really. I did not even really notice them when playing. O look the world map looks like SM3....yeahgot over that in a few seconds cause then i was to busy hitting stuff iwht a baseball bat and haveing snowball fights with my room mate. lol.

I love this QL so much. Specifically because it hurts the feelings of fanboys, something you really can't do enough, and it's especially hurtful because it's true.  GB staff, lemme know when you next make a video that's a real "downer". Because I will watch it with my mouth.

The game is pretty much as they described at first glance; the one good thing about it is that it could provide a very clear insight as to why there aren't many brawlers around anymore: they're really boring, complete with all the standard tropes like off-screen enemies, gimmicky pick-ups, special rules to hit stuff that's floored, etc. Combat was pretty boring too, with some moves turned obsolete once something better came along, not to mention how (at least in the beginning) much health the mobs start out with. It was tedious at first because it was a money grind; still tedious later because you're killing enemies left and right just to get to the end of the stages.

And I hate all things retro now. I used to be indifferent, but good ol' Scott Pilgrim saw to that. Next person I see parading around in a celebratory NES T-shirt will get my farts in their mouth. Luckily, stuffing as many inane references you can into a game puts it beyond criticism. Here's the thing. I don't want games, or any other media for that matter, to like stuff for me. I'm capable of that, and if I really wanna talk about how much I like OLD VIDJAGAEMZ there's always a nerd within phone's reach. A much better approach is simply being a good game yourself. Novel concept, I know.

It's a classic example of style over substance. Nice pixel artwork, very good music. Too bad they had to be diminished somewhat by the shamelessly indulgent retro parade. Just put your money towards the soundtrack instead.

Oh, and "it's better with friends" is the weakest defense ever. Few activities aren't better with friends. The game doesn't suck less because others can shoulder the suck with you.

i understand why jeff didn't like the game. it isnt anything new to him. but as someone who hasn't played RCR and likes scott pilgrim i would definitely check this game out. it looks like fun.

LOL, I love Brad's reaction for the end of the first boss fight.

Posted by SBYM

I really like the way this game looks and sounds, but I just cannot play brawlers any more; the gameplay gets so boring so fast. Also, I know nothing about Scott Pilgrim.

Aw crap, you can't play with people online?
